<3, EmiAnne (aka Kelly)

How long had it been? An hour? A year?

There is a sound, a crashing. I don’t move from my space, the floor shaking and yet I still look at the exact spot she had been, my eyes not betraying me by moving, even a little. A giant black ball crashes through the apartment just a few inches from the door that she had given me the last look from, her eyes sorry and her hand tight in his. The wrecking ball had come dangerously close, a growl building deep in my throat.

I rise for the first time from that excruciating moment, my legs somehow not imploding from the pain. The ball goes through the room again, destroying the green apartment door. I roar deafeningly and jump onto the deathly sphere, stopping it in its tracks. The momentum stops square in my chest, the entire machine quivering for a moment. I give a low grunt- when did I feed? A few hours before she left, I guess…

And how long ago was that? I couldn’t think in measures of time, since she left, just the fact that it was long ago. I let go of the ball before the loud rough calls of workers can come to examine. The windows of the room were dark with thick black curtains, but now there is a gash of light coming through the holes in the walls, sun flashing across my body. I know that there should be pain, like no other, but now that there has been a deeper pain, I don’t notice it. But the skin uncovered by the long sleeves of my hoodie, long dark blue jeans and grey Converses has begun to have the look of the burning- sandpapery and grayish. Eventually it will spread to the covered skin, then my heart, where I’ll…

I sprint to escape the sun. I find shelter in a brick shed, no windows. The door slams behind me, a corner with dry fertilizer my new home. I suck air through my teeth, the taste damp, musty. I wish I could sleep, wish I could escape the misery for just a little while. But I haven’t for so long, can't remember how, I can’t. I curl up, like before in our apartment, but now that doesn’t help the pain, not one little bit. I hold my legs closer to my body, probably crushing them, if they could be crushed. I hope they implode, so that I’d never have to think, feel the agony of her leaving again.

The door creaks open, two figures shadowy against the light. The sun hits a few inches away from me, they don’t see me, and my eyes close, thinking. They push the door closed behind them, a thump as they sit down. Without making a sound, I rise and creep towards them, finding a latch in the door and lock it. No escape.

“Gaby,” a male voice whispers, “I love you forever.”

“I know,” the other voice whispers, her voice what could possibly be considered beautiful, but can’t hold a candle to my Denise. “I love you too, Ty.” There is a rustle of movement.

I sigh. This is boring, and I’m hungry- my eyes open.

“Hello?” the girl whispers. “Is somebody there?”

She is rather dumb, to ask that. Of course I’m here- I can see everything so perfectly, even if her simple eyes can’t. Ty whispers a shhh, holds her hand. I grab their wrists, the ones they aren’t using to hold hands. He screams, a ridiculously high-pitched squeal, and I let go of him for one moment- dead, a flick of my wrist. She is simple to knock out, not a drop of blood spilled. I go for his throat, the warmth spreading through all of my body. So beautiful, the salty, sweet flavour rich on my tongue, a forever ago since I last tasted the substance.

The frenzy didn’t last long, but Gaby’s eyes are flickering when I finish. I put him down, and walk over to her.

“Hey,” I say. “You okay?”

Her eyes pop open, terror all across her face. She looks to Ty’s corpse, back to me. Her mouth opens just a little.

“Don’t scream, I don’t want to kill you,” my voice is soft, but the words have to be so harsh. It makes me sorry to see her pretty face creased like that. Her voice isn’t nearly as pretty as the rest of her, a true beauty. Her big blue eyes nearly make me sigh.

“Don’t kill me-“her voice is strong , but her eyes reveal her terror.

“I wasn’t planning on it.”

“Then why did you kill Ty?” her voice accusatory, mad.

“Hadn’t fed for a while.”

That sends her sputtering. Gaby doesn’t speak for a while, eyes confused and terrified. Suddenly she blurts- “Vampire.”

I nod. My fangs are barely noticeable, but I smile to let her look for them. Her mouth opens wide, a familiar thing.

My hand is clamped over hers in a moment. “Not screaming, remember?” I murmur, then put both my arms under her thin frame, pick her up. She is light, and her mouth is clamped shut. Outdoors it is dusk, a dangerous time, but not deadly.

“Why aren’t you going to kill me?” Her voice is soft, frightened. Those perfect eyes searched my face.

“I don’t know.” I paused- I did know. “You’re beautiful.” And, I thought, you look like Denise.

I kept running, the girl drifting to sleep in my arms.

The way Denise had, that time ago.

Running north.

Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, "I will try again tomorrow"

Beautiful. And let me say welcome! Assuming you are new and not a returning member. I loved your story. In my opinion you could use your talent writing stories that are not in a dying market but uh...
that's for you to decide.
It was great, really. No grammatical nitpicks, no passive voice, intriguing beginning and kudos for bringing the memory in a cohesive circle. Great job :smt001
Hope to read more from you.

Hi. I've read this a couple of times and figure I'll give you a review.

Nitpicks first.

even if infinitesimally.

There are times when a short word works better than a long one, and this is totally one of those times. "Infinitesimally" is a ridiculously hard word to pronounce, and therefore it stilts the flow as we stumble over it. Just change it to "minutely", or cut this phrase entirely.

The momentum is ended at my chest

That's very awkward, and I have no idea what you mean. Did his heart stop momentarily, or what? Use "the momentum ends" if you must describe it like this at all, but I don't know what you're talking about. :?

I hope they implode

I think you used "implode" before, and since it's not a particularly common word, I wouldn't use it too often. Unless vampires have a habit of imploding now? I must read Twilight at some point. xD

Her voice isn’t nearly as beautiful as the rest of her, a true beauty.

You use "beautiful" rather a lot. If you could find a synonym, I think it would relieve some of the repetition. As it is, it also makes the moment where he finally says it, finally says that she's beautiful, meaningless. So cut the "beautiful" until then.

Okay, so that's it for nitpicks. There are relatively few. I have one question though: how does he stop the demolition ball from moving? I don't quite understand that. It's swinging, and then he jumps on it, and then it stops? I would have thought he'd just end up swinging on top of it, which would be a bit too comic for a story like this. Anyway, if you could help me out on that...

So far, it's well written and I feel for your character. I almost wish he wasn't a vampire though. There's too much Twilight going around at the moment for a unique vampire story to shine, I think, and that in itself is an almost impossible feat - uniqueness. Even this is reminiscent of Twilight, and I don't want it to be, because it's good.

I love the suspense and mystery you have attached. However be very careful with your point of view and character development. These can be extremely difficult in first person present tense. Also watch your descriptions. He can't see if his eyes are angry or red or whatever. You haven't yet but for future reference. Other than that it was great. Story seemed good from what I read. I'm not too big a fan of Vampires but you're a very talented writer. Keep up the good work!!

Hey! It's Dinkeroo! Sorry it took me so long. I got sick, and it turned out to be the flu. Blah. It wasn't fun. Anywho... On to the critique!

I think everybody else got the nitpicks. That's okay. Nitpicks aren't my thing anyway. I liked this. It was an interesting new take on the vampire thing. It left me wanting to know who Denise was, which I'm pretty sure is what you were intending to do. Overall, this was good. You did well, young grasshopper. :)

Sorry, I would write more and give you more help, but I'm exhausted. You know where to find me if you've got questions.

I smile, because I'd rather have laugh lines than a perma frown. :)
