It was a sunny day. the kind of day in which everything shined and the shadows of the trees created different shades of black and green gloriously; even the soft chirping of the birds sounded like a heavenly harp being privately played for each human passing by. Everything looked perfect definitely made by the hand of a heavenly being. It was a like a small piece of heaven brought to earth.
But down on the human life was chaos. The center of the little village was full people; people crying, people laughing, people talking and people selling and handing things. There were dogs barking and running after the mice and cats all along the narrow streets of the village. The small selling spots were full, they sold fruits, clothes, grocery, jewelry and there were even poor children stealing the few things the women owned. The crowded streets of the little market place seemed like little threads of brown fabric.
And among that chaotic village was walking a girl. A girl about thirteen years old was walking through the streets staring down to the ground with a sour expression. She rolled her eyes every time she saw a small girl ask for a coin; she grimaced every time she saw an old man with a cane smiling from ear to ear. And she constantly kicked the ground as she walked making small clouds of dust every time she thought about the little happy village. The girl walked fast, not turning away her gaze from the ground, loathing the thought of living in a poor country village whose only sin was to have the gift of happiness.
She walked until it was near midday and her body, inside that long scarlet, velvet dress, felt the need to rest. She leaned against a wall in a small corridor and slowly let herself fall slowly until she was sitting in the last stair of three that led to a street across her. Tiredness was overwhelming since she had been walking all day, waiting for a gift of her own heaven in the godforsaken village, and the heat was getting stronger. Her eyelids became heavy and she let out a huge yawn. But Before she closed her eyes and gave up to sleep, something caught her attention.
Two men were sitting in a small wall about three feet tall with the happiest faces she had ever seen. They were laughing and pointing at each other as if in jokes;patting each other's shoulders occasionally, pointing at each other jokingly.
The sun barely reached the small garden where they were seated since the zinc ceiling covered must of it. But the dark green shades of the tall trees and creeping plants made it look fantastic; like other worldly. The tallest tree standing next to them created a shadow above the heart-shaped nose one that was wearing a beret and a checked shirt. While the other one, thoughtfully looked at the board and smiled as if in some kind of private joke. It looked like an enchanted forest worthy of an old fairytale.
And after a while the red haired girl realized they were playing checkers. They were obviously experts; she watched them move their pieces with overwhelming speed and agility as if knowing what the other's move was going to be. Like old friends knowing what the other was thinking; a special bond oblivious only to the ones who didn't want to see it.
A young man drinking beer form a big glass eventually joined the two old men, his ragged clothes dirty from work. He stared at them and laughed every time they finished a game or made a move that confused the other. More people joined later, including a woman with a pair of shoes in her hand and a boy who played with the plants and revolved around the two men, chanting, singing and laughing, dancing to the beat of the tambourine he had in his hand.
She was beginning to fall asleep looking at such beautifully peculiar picture of random happiness. She gave in to the hands of the little imaginary blue fairy of the dreams. But suddenly, she felt someone kneeling beside her peacefully. She slowly opened her eyes and turned to see who it was; it was her father with his smiling face looking at her with warm and loving eyes for he had found his little girl. And with that she knew it was time to go.
Her father helped her up and she started walking away slowly and with the last hint of curiosity she had left, she turned around and looked at the little group of people watching the checkers game. But before she turned her eyes away, the old man with the thick glasses and white shirt waved at her grinning. She suddenly felt blushed but pleased, so she nodded and easily smiled back a the old man looked back at his checkers board.
She felt weird, she felt a happiness that she had never felt before, elation almost. It was something she couldn't expect from a simple and poor town. But maybe that was it, the town was simple,so simple, that it's simplicity was an ocean of hidden secrets and yet to be discovered beauty. She kept walking, smiling to herself and thinking of what she had discovered. She ran eagerly toward her house, smiling at herself for such contagious happiness, anxious about keeping her secret; the secret beauty of simplicity.
