Two works at once?

Well, I am currently working on one novel (And draft two/three is looking a lot better thanks to all of you) but I have some good ideas that if I don't expand on now I never will.

Is it ok to write two novels at once?

Will it take away the quality from the novels?

Will it more or less drive me mad? Just kidding, I am already there.

I've tried to do two at the same time, normally it goes I'll work on both, get tired of the one I started second, and go right back to my original.
I still do it any way, although right now is different because it's more of a series of short stories and not a huge novel.

I guess it just depends on the person.

A common writer problem ^^ But don't worry, you're not alone. Writer's get new ideas for novels all the time. The best thing to do is get a notebook to write down your new ideas so you won't forget that idea. Just make a list, since more ideas will come along.

You could also try to combine ideas with your current novel.

If you're doing two novels, you need to make sure you have one that you favor, one that you'll stay to commited to. When you're writing, you need to stay commited to a novel otherwise it won't get finished. If you try to come back to it after making a different novel your main focus, your writing won't be the same. But if you change novels, and do like sub-novel, it's easier to pick up where you left off.

Is it ok to write two novels at once?

Two novels at once is okay, just as long as you know which one you're most loyal to.

Will it take away the quality from the novels?
Sometimes splitting your attention in half does take away from the quality. Just be sure to put in everything you've got into whatever you write, and you should be good.

Will it more or less drive me mad? Just kidding, I am already there.

xD Not really. Usually when you have a lot of ideas, you're happy because you have a lot to write about.

Um, well, I do that a lot, since I tend to get stuck when I'm writing very often. I switch back and forth a lot, and that usually seems to help me when I'm stuck. Then my writing isn't as forced as it could be if I'm just focusing on one story. But, then again, I'm probably not the best person to ask.

So, it really depends what type of writer you are. If you're like me, and then to get writer's blocks often, then that isn't such a bad idea. If you're not, well, then you shouldn't follow my example.

Haha alright thanks everybody I guess I will try to do two, keeping in mind which one I am most loyal to, and moniter my writing carfully and if I start to write less quality work I will stick to the original only.

You definitely can work on more than one novel at one time. Some people just don't like to.

Yup, just sort of seconding what everyone else said. I'm currently working on two novels and have a series of short stories on the side. I pretty much have one project that I say I am "writing" and the other two are just sort of things that I turn to when I have had enough of the main project.

It's actually kind of liberating sometimes, that way in case I have just had it with whatever I am writing, I can turn to something completely different, instead of wallowing in self-pity because I have nothing to write.

For fanfiction I can do multiple stories at a time with no problem because each story has clear boundaries that tell them apart from one another. After all, Harry Potter is nothing like Naruto.

For original fiction I generally like to work on my stuff one at a time, to truly focus and get into the novel. I think that's just because I have a fluid way of writing and the outline constantly changes as I go along. To be honest, I probably could work on multiple stories at once, but I also love to just throw myself into writing, like with the use of writing month challenges.

But, I do love to just throw myself into a story and focus on it and see what kinds of things come out of the woodwork. And, focusing on one story at a time means that your mind is solely working on that one novel, so more plot bunnies come out of the woodwork for it.

I personally find it hard to write more than one novel at a time. I lose my focus on one, and I'll never really get back into the 'mood' I need to write it - it's the same as what happens when I leave a story for long enough without writing. I tend to be forming new ideas in my head as I'm writing, and the general direction of the story changes a lot during the course of writing it.

Having said that, everyone is different and you should figure out if writing two novels at once works for you

depends. Some poeple work a lot better under stress and knowing they can always work on something else and not the same thing over and over again. However it can be tricky. Sometimes you can end up writing similar places, persons and things. OR! You can end up making yourself too stressed and make writing no fun (that's not GOOD! >_<)
