A Geisha Girl

Note: Okay, guys, as much as I love the critiquing, even now, this needs to die xD. Its been on here since 2009. So please redirect your lovely attention to someone who recently posted work? ;D


Okay so, basically, I was watching memoirs of a Geisha and I had sudden inspiration to draw my very own Geisha girl. Of course, the drawing didn't start till a week later when I was bored and sitting in Gym and we were watching the movie 'Enough' since it's the end of the year. The drawing turned out a lot better then I thought it was going to, with her plieted Obi and the petal pattern on her Kimono. I shaded it during religion cause I thought it would make it more proffessional. Tell me what you think!

This is very good. You did a good job with the details in the Kimono and in the hair. Good idea shading it in.
One suggestion is to add a background, weather it is outdoors by a tree or inside next to a lovely table. Either way, I think that it will make your picture even better.

Wow, this picture is amazing! For the most part your skill in drawing correct proportions and your shading ability is great for only seventeen years old.

The only thing I'd be able to contribute as advice is that maybe her neck is just a tad too long.

And I'd love to see what this would look like colored or inked, and maybe even with a background. But keep up the good work!

June here, as if that's not obvious. This is a fabulous masterpiece of art. It's so excellently shaded... I just want to snatch it off the screen and keep it for myself. Only nipicks:

- Her chin is rather sharp. I think it should be slightly more rounded.

- The fold in her kimono on the lower left side is also a bit sharp; since it's fabric, I feel it should be slightly more rounded.

Excellent job with the shading and such. The proportions look pretty well done, too, though a professional might argue with them. Beautiful work, Dreamwalk. =D Keep it up; I would love to see more from you

Hello Dreamwalker!

So, I thought this was very good! Everything looks very real and nicely proportioned. However, I agree with June, her chin is awfully pointy. Pointy chins look great in things like Manga, but this is very realistic, so I would tone down the pointyness.

Another small thing is that her right foot looks a little off to me. Also, you have a tiny little line that goes into her dress right above her left foot. (I have to be extra nit-picky because this is so good. ) I have a question about her footwear, it that what Geishas wear?

Anyway, I thought this was very good. Bravo!

I absolutely love this. The shading is amazing. i dont know what a geisha girl is suppose to look like but I think you did a fantastic job of drawing this. Her komono(sp) looks so good. There are no flaws. I cant believe you drew this. Just an awesome job. blew me away

So are you giving art classes? ahah just kidding but really i wish I could draw like that.

It would make doodling much more fun. ah.

Thank you all for your wonderful comments! And, want to hear a funny thing? Well, the chin turned out to be rather sharp because the drawing initially, and still somewhat shows that it was, in fact, an anime drawing. The smaller eyes were for effect but her hair is rather sharp and jagged in areas, as is seen.

But I will fix the chin , and the sharp jagged area.

And the geisha's footwear is actually a sandle that is really tall but more like a backward stileto for you walk mostly on the heel. It's plenty hard to explain XP. But the footwear I chose for her in this drawing was a traditional male wooden clog in japan. They have little wooden strips on the bottom elevating them up but they are terribly hard to walk in XP.

Oh and one more quick thing! As someone stated prior, the neck seems to be inhumanly long, and yes that is true but I was actually going for that XD. I know, sounds weird.

But with Geisha, the neck, like legs to men in america, are the most attractive part of the geisha. They wear their kimono's low in the back to excentuate the thin, almost swan-like neck. Her neck is kind of the focal point of the piece, or at least it was till I shaded it XD.

My only real concern is in proportion.

The head seems rather small in respects to the neck, which seems almost a little too wide. The same goes for the hands, which seem rather small and the feet, which seem big.

However, the shading is really wonderful, most especially by the collar of her kimono. I also liked the way you did the detail in the wrinkles of her sleeves and in the piece in her hair. That is really nice and even if it isn’t the most central object of the drawing, you still give the girl character by adding the detail there.

Oh yeah, and that chins really pointy…you should maybe make it…less pointy.

Actually, Lillymore, I'm glad you noted that ^_^.

The neck was the focal point of the picture so I made it unrealistically long as a geisha wishes for since the neck of a geisha is the legs of an american woman. I know, sounds weird, but to the japanese at the time, that was really a good looking spot XD.

But yeah, regards to the neck, a neck does connect just below the ear so usually on the style I used it would like fairly big.

The hands, though, are around the correct proportion. If you spread her fingers and put her hand on her face it would be around the same size.

Also, feet are commonly seen as small but they really aren't. Put your foot up against your forearm. It's about the same size. I know, huge, and unpropotioned in my work, but she has fairly long forearms whichs makes her look graceful. I thought distorting the body helps to enhance the idea of what 'Geisha' was.

Seeing as no male members of YWS have voiced their appreciation of this picture, I shall do so. Very impressive, very beautiful (though the neck does make her look strange by my standards, but I'm not Japanese so I can only appreciate her even more for her unusually long neck) and you are clearly very talented. I've been drawing a lot recently, but I don't think any of my drawings are up to this standard - if any are, it's the ones where I've sketched a picture from another picture.

I find the expression on her face quite interesting. To me it looks quite demure, as I suppose you might expect from a young geisha, but there's something about the left (her right) eye which suggests something else (not sure what - possibly confidence or mischief). This might be because it is partially covered by her hair, though, or possibly just my imagination.

I reallllly like it ^^ looks very pretty, it would look amazing in color hahaha just an imagination at work. Grins* hope to see more of your wonderful drawing!!!!!! Good luck and Happy Drawing/Writing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
