Note: I'm not sure about this second half of chapter 1. I feel that there can be more descriptions but I'm not sure where to put them. I think it's boring and then ending could be improved, but my question is, what do you think I should add/take away. I'd love to hear everyone's opinions. Thanks for reading.

Chapter 1 (con)

I was turning into a zombie. All of the symptoms were there. I couldn't think. It was as if someone turned my brain off and now I was just walking from class to class like a reanimated corpse. Even the teachers noticed my "Night of the Living Dead" state but they didn't seem to care. Instead of looks of concern, I received smirks and tsks as if this was all some big joke. The only good thing about this was that no one called on me to answer any questions and Eric, who kept looking back at me ever so often, didn't dare make a stupid remark. I had Lucas to thank for that.
But my luck ran out when seventh period rolled around. English was the only class Carmen and I shared. I immediately regretted my decision on having my seat assigned next to her, when I entered the room. She was looking at me, her hazel eyes burning with both curiosity and concern. Unfortunately, she was not like Jackie and wouldn't let me off the hook if I told her I was fine. Brushing her long honey-brown hair out of her eyes, she turned ever so slightly, so that her chair was facing mine. I used to think that Mr. Heder's class was boring but Carmen was going to make it a living Hell. She dropped the bomb before I even got to sit down.
"What are you keeping from Lucas?"
I glared at her, not caring how harsh I was anymore. But the fire in my eyes didn't seem to perturb her. She just continued to meet my gaze and for once, I was thankful for Mr. Heder's monotone voice. He was at the front of the room, a vision of perfectly round circles from head to toe. A piece of chalk was in his wrinkly fat hand and he was writing something across the board. Each word squealed in my ears. Carmen, unlike me, actually cared about this class. She turned her eyes to the front of the room, after flashing me a look that meant that this conversation wasn't over. I smiled knowing that Mr. Heder will have concocted one of his long speeches to recite to the class and Carmen would have no choice but to listen to it. He licked his paper thin lips and then started to drone on about something. I couldn't tell you exactly what he was talking about because it all sounded like blah blah blah.
I took my notebook out of my book bag and flipped it open to a blank page. If doodling was a class, I could probably pass it. At first, I started out just drawing the standard three-petaled flowers with the curly stems. They danced across the sheet of paper morphing into an image from a far off memory. A chiseled jaw, shoulder length black hair, and two dark eyes that seemed to have been birthed from the night itself. I grew cold. I had seen this face at Lucas' funeral. It was raining and the fog was just setting in. Out of a handful of faces, his was the only one I could see. He was standing at the far end of the grave site, wearing all black. The dream usually ended with me following him farther and farther into the mist.
This man had only appeared in my dreams one time but there was something about his presence that emitted danger. As if he were a bad omen or a reaper of death. I didn't know this guy from Adam and yet, in my dreams, I followed him willingly. When I was younger, my mother had always told me not to go anywhere with strangers. Some would probably pull the 'lost puppy' or 'I'll give you candy' trick but this one didn't need to speak words or physically do anything to lure me away.
My head started to pound. It was the kind of pain that made you want to curl up into a ball and cry. I pressed my hand to my forehead and pressed hard, hoping to alleviate some of the ache.
Carmen nudged me and then I looked up to find, Mr. Heder hovering over me. His glasses were sliding down his crow nose and his arms were folded over his robust gut.
"Miss Katic, are you not feeling well?" he asked, in the same flat tone he used all the time.
"I'm..." I started but then the door to class flew open. All eyes flashed over to the right of the room to see who was entering. When I saw that it was only Principal Carter, I looked down at the table. She was a nice woman and all but she wasn't necessarily anything anyone would want to ogle at for a long period of time. Her attire always consisted of some bright color. Bright colors and headaches just didn't mix.
"Mr. Heder, I'm sorry for interrupting your class but we have a new student. He had been wandering the halls looking for this class but got lost."
The sound of Mr. Heder walking away settled my nerves just a little.
"He is hot!" Carmen whispered.
It was a shock to hear someone like Carmen say that, seeing as though she really didn't date and was kind of a tomboy, though she didn't dress like it.
"It is fine, Mrs. Carter. We weren't deep into discussion yet but I'm sure he's read Hamlet before. Tell me, young man, what is your name?"
"Alec Lane, sir." a deep, firm voice replied.
"Well, it is nice to have you with us, Mr. Lane. Please, take a seat."
I could hear the annoyance in Mr. Heder's voice. He was indeed not too geeked about our new student, if anything he was probably cursing the boy for his existence. I, on the other hand, felt sorry for this Alec Lane. He was about to get the first taste of one of Mr. Heder's famous (or should I say infamous) speeches. I bet you by the end of this period, he will have wished he stayed where he was.
As the new boy walked past my table, another pang, sharper than the one before, raged inside my head. I let out a low squeal and closed my eyes.
"What's that by your foot?" Carmen asked.
Unwillingly, I looked down at my sneakers, to see a necklace. I reached down and picked it up, the chain felt cold against my skin. Attached to it was a strange symbol that looked like three lightning bolts.
"It's beautiful," Carmen said.
"Um, I believe that's mine," I recognized that voice. It was Alec's. I looked up at him for the first time, only to have my head spin. It was him. The guy from my dreams was standing before me. Those eyes were boring right into mine and for some reason, I felt the urge to do whatever he wanted me to do. My stomach began to growl and bile rose in my throat.
Mr. Heder said something as I ran to the door, but he quieted down once he saw that my hand was pressed to my lips. The bathroom was just down the hall but it seemed like it would take an eternity to reach it as I ran. My legs were morphing into jelly underneath me and the dizziness was getting worse. It was if my brain was riding one of those tea cups at Disney World.
Alec had those same deep eyes that were a cross between midnight blue and black. Though the face seemed boyish up close, it was still identical to the one I remembered. I still couldn't understand what part he played in Lucas' death, though I was positive that we would meet again. We might even become friends. So maybe he wasn't a stranger. Maybe Lucas and I did acquaint him and he was just coming to the funeral to pay his respects but...vomit started to push it's way out. Warm chunks of yellow stuff flowed out of my mouth and into my hand. The bathroom was just a few paces away but I couldn't move. And I didn't think I wanted to. My stomach began to ache, tying into intricate knots that brought me to my knees. The spit-up began to rain all over the linoleum floor.
Everything was beginning to hurt now. It was as if my entire body was on fire. I could hear someone coming down the hallway in a slow pace. They probably didn't care that I was throwing up in the hallway. The pain grew more prominent as the person got closer and closer. I felt faint and a little numb, like someone just shot me with a dose of Novocaine.
Black dots danced across my eyes, getting bigger and bigger and bigger. The person who was walking down the hall stopped in front of me. I struggled to look up, hoping it was someone who could help but it was only Alec Lane. There was a wry smile pasted on his face and as he knelt down beside me, my breath caught or it would have if I had any oxygen left in my body. I couldn't breathe and it felt like someone was wrapping their hands around my neck and squeezing. In my peripheral vision, I could see two arms on either side of me. He was choking me. I tried to push him away but all of my tries were useless. I felt weak, like one would feel if they lost a lot of blood.
His eyes were the last thing I saw before I was completely submerged into a torrent of blackness.

Great stuff Angel!

I've noticed your beginnings are week, but the endings are very strong. It's is sometimes rather difficult to really get into the writing, and by mid length the writing automatically improves because you're really, living and breathing it.

So it shows that you have great potential for descriptive writing, but that is also your weak point in some cases.

I feel that there can be more descriptions but I'm not sure where to put them. I think it's boring and then ending could be improved, but my question is, what do you think I should add/take away.

Personally, I think the ending is your strong point in this chapter. I think in the beginning you did the telling thing too much.
Each word squealed in my ears.

Wonderful! that's really showing how much of a difficult state she is in. Keep doing that.

I couldn't tell you exactly what he was talking about because it all sounded like blah blah blah.

This sentence has a lot of potential and could very successfully bring across her mental disposition if altered slightly. Show us that she struggles to listen to him, but his words slip though her mind, not making any sense, his mouth is opening with meaningless sounds coming out of his throat... Those kind of images would do well. Use powerful imagery and descriptive language. Throw in a strong simile or metaphor here and there. ;)

The part where she's doodling in the notebook and goes into a stance of sorts is slightly confusing. Perhaps starting a new paragraph where it begins will not not only make it more powerful, but also less confusing. It is an important part of your sentence and deserves a new paragraph.

I took my notebook out of my book bag and flipped it open to a blank page. If doodling was a class, I could probably pass it. At first, I started out just drawing the standard three-petaled flowers with the curly stems. (New para here.) I would say that's a week sentence. Doesn't really bring forth the pain she's experiencing. I have headaches often. So I thought I should really 'feel' this sentence. But they don't make me want to cry, actually they make me want to grind my teeth, or groan. Crying is too common a word, it has too vast a meaning. The sentence after that is much better. I can really relate to it. :)

I like that colour thing. Colours can be annoying when one has a headache. However your MC's tone is not one of someone in pain. Work on getting the emotions of the MC into her tone.

Lovely! I shivered slightly at the 'him' part. Great job! The tone is great, the description, the mood, it all works here.

This is really an interesting story and you've got me hooked to find out what happens next. Keep writing!

Hey Angel =]

Thanks for the PM!

Sorry I'm a bit late, but I've had a weak off of YWS to try and edit my story.

So, this story still has me interested. You write beautifully and the words seem to flow effortlessly but I do agree with mizz-iceberg, in that the beginning is a lot weaker than the rest of the piece. It seemed a bit harder to read the first half of the piece than it did the second. I think that it's because there isn't much action until the third paragraph. Your writing seems to flow better when there is action and dialogue involved.

It was as if someone turned - I'd add in 'had' after 'someone'

This man had only appeared in my dreams one time but there - I'd write 'once' instead of 'one time'

I pressed my hand to my forehead and pressed hard, hoping to alleviate some of the ache. - You could maybe change this sentence to something like; 'I pressed my suddenly sweaty hand hard against my forehead, hoping to alleviate some of the sharp aching.' - something along those lines anyway =]

He was indeed not too geeked - I'm going to take it that this is an American expression as I've never heard it before. Does it mean, 'not too impressed' ? :)

I reached down and picked it up, the chain felt cold against my skin. - I'd change the comma to a full stop.

My legs were morphing into jelly underneath me - I'd change 'underneath' to 'beneath'

We might even become friends. - I'd add a little more to this thought. How does she feel about the fact that they may become friends? Does she wonder why Alec would kill Lucas if they were friends?

I could hear someone coming down the hallway in a slow pace. - Maybe add in something about how she could hear their footsteps on the floor and how the noise seemed to echo in her ears, making her feel worse.

hoping it was someone who could help but it was only Alec Lane. - Maybe she could wonder why he's out of class.

His eyes were the last thing I saw before I was completely submerged into a torrent of blackness. - Creepy! Though you could add in a little description of the eyes. Did they look menacing? Dark?

Overall; I love this story and I can't wait to read the next part :D

Can you PM me when you post it, please?

I hope this review had been of some help to you!

Thanks you two for the critiques!
Your writing seems to flow better when there is action and dialogue involved.

Hmm? I've always thought it was the other way around, because I find it really really hard to write dialogue and such. The beginning of this part of chapter is horrible. I just really wanted to get something out and now that I'm revising Chapter 1, I'll try to make it hook better.

Geeked is an American expression. It means to be happy or excited about something. I don't use it often, but I hear a lot of people say it and I couldn't remember the word I wanted to use, so geeked was put in it's place.

I'm thinking about changing how Marsa encounters Alec so this scene will be stretched out a little. Maybe some more dialogue and action.

I really appreciate everyone's critiques. Though I absolutely hate editing, it's nice to know what I can approve on instead of trying to guess what I need to do. So, expect some changes and Chapter 2 in the future!

Thanks again,

~Angel

I'm back, Angel, for another round of review!

And now that I have finished the second half of your new piece of work, I found nothing wrong! It was that good!

I must agree with the above comments that this was much more developed. We got to know Mars on a different level.

However, I feel that Alec is too underdeveoloped to really play a major role. I have a wierd feeling that he wasn't choking her, that it was alll in her imagination, but I guess I will have to wait and see what happens next.

Please let me know when the next chapter is posted of this. I would love to continue reading this and I hope you turn this into a novel.

You have a very good start and I wish you the best of luck.

I know you'll do wonders to this piece

Good Afternoon, Angel!

Okay, like the first sentence made me laugh! Zombies? Reminds me a lot of my sister. (she loves all things zombies)

I have a question here, is Carmen a friend or an acquaintance? Because I don't remember from the first part. Oh, and I just loved the way you described Mr. Heder, being all perfectly round. Now that's funny. And how does Carmen know Lucas? Maybe I'll just have to read more.

Gosh, you know I totally forgot that Mar had visions. I do wonder if the one about the accident with Lucas is going to come true or not. I wonder...

You know, I can totally picture Principal Carter and all. I can see her being this short lady with some crazy bright color on as she walks down the hallways.

I had that same problem too!! I was such a little kid when I rode that one ride at Disney Land. Headaches, dizziness, and sickness all came when I got off and starting going in different directions.

Man, I'm totally going off topic. Sorry.

Alec is...weird and strange. And what's with the necklace thingy? Unless, Mar is suffering from hallucinations, then Alec is not choking her.

Anyway, in my opinion I felt the emotions were well balanced. So kudos to you!

I'm sorry if I wasn't much help here. I guess I was more immersed with this story of yours that I didn't check for mistakes.

Well, do pm me when the next part goes up. I really want to know what's going to happen here.

Melly
