Caurien, Mountains, and a Dragon...

All of these were done on the Neondragon Art Oekaki Boards. :3

Caurien is a character from Thirilight. This took 3 hours to do.


I got lazy with the clouds. XD 2 hours.


This took forever to do the lineart. XD The coloring was fun, though, and I'm very happy with how it came out since I was experimenting with a new coloring style. 5 hours.

How did you color the mountain one?

I painted it all on one layer with the Watercolor and Watercolor 2 brushes.

I'll just skip straight into my review:

The character portrait is truly well done. You have a great sense of structure and I really am impressed. (I can't draw people worth crap)

The mountains and skyline are awesome. If its digital work I'm impressed once again as you created the look of oil work. Which is NOT easy. Oil painting takes hours of painstaking labor, the last painting I did took me 3 months, and it was just a couple of mountains and a forest...There's a good sense of proportion in the art as well.

The dragon is well done. From a purely realistic stand point (I realize the irony of using realism in reference to a fantasy creature) if the dragon was to fly, his/her wings would need to be far larger. Typically a creatures wing span is twice the entire length of its body and a tail is typically as long as the body from nose tip to tailbone. Although that is not always the standard. Some creatures have stubby tails, others have longer, it's really personal choice there.

From an artistic standpoint, however, the dragon was done well. A lack of darkness and in certain cases a lack of certain shadows causes a loss of three-dimensionality, but overall it was done very well. The biggest spot I can point out where it happens is the hind leg that's visible behind the "flame gout/sparkle gout/whatever gout". Though it's no easy task to create that look properly and its something that gives me trouble as well.
It's just one of those complicated things where the light should illuminate it some, which will shed away some shadows, but at the same time the darkness of the shadows that would remain would intensify due to that.

I hope I didn't seem too harsh, it really was not my intent to be harsh or to discourage, though I know it can be easy to interpret artistic criticism that way.

I think you have a lot of talent and skill, so you should definitely keep churning out work.

It is digital. And boy do I know it with oil painting not being easy. There's this one painting of just a opaque vase of flowers that took me a year to complete, and I'm still not entirely happy with how it turned out (but my mother has forbidden me from touching it anymore because she likes it the way it is now)...

Ah, but those wings are actually ribbed and webbed spines. :P There are more of them all the way down the dragon's back, but you can't see them because the head and other spines block them from view.

You remind me of my friend. XD She's always telling me, "You need darker darks! Don't be afraid of the dark darks! Or brighter colors. You need brighter colors, too."

ooh, I like the character drawing at the top, and the dragon one at the bottom. The mountain one is colored very well, but it's not too interesting (to me), whereas the other two are full of character. Nice work! I like your style. It's very soft, if that makes sense

1) This picture would look so cool if you colored it and shaded it. Mind you, it looks cool enough as is. Very crisp and neat. I love the detail on the collarbone.

2) Looks like something you would see in a dream, because its colorful and fuzzy, but not in a bad way. The light looks really cool against the mountain.

3) Amazing! Love the coloring and detail, especially the eye, because it really stands out. I also like the scales? on the chest. But...(yes, there's a but) why is the dragon's fire blue and bubbly?

Overall, simply amazing. Glad to see you took your time. Amazing for digital art.

I forget... I know it involved a either the Watercolor and/or Watercolor 2 brush at a large size and low opacity. The glowy bits were done with the Watercolor.

Yup. They're scales. As for the fire, it's not really fire. It was supposed to be fire, but that didn't work out, and so I tried lightning, but that didn't work out either, so it became a beam of bubbly blue light. XD
