The families both live in the innercity, for the most part, and are no strangers to one another. Their children often attend the same schools, and the adults often find themselves in business with each other. Any friendly relationship between the two must always be kept secret, as one could be killed by their own family from mingling with the other side. Or worse, they could find themselves without protection--and no one want to be without protection.
Once someone is in the mob, the last thing they want to do is leave it. Pulling out of the mob leaves one with zero protection from them, and vulnerable to the attacks of the other family. And in a world where children's first gifts are pistols wrapped in a silk blankets, it's basically impossible to get out of.
The Character Guidelines:
-No "powers". This is a modern day, realistic setting.
-Can be any age, newborn-100. In fact, a wide range would be awesome.
-Each family can have one "head". It can be a man or a woman, but they need to be 50+ years old, at least. These people will probably get the most attention in the book, and will be making all the hard decisions.
-This is a family mafia thing, so creating an actual family would be great (parents, kids, grandparents? etc) and would work better than having 29382983 teenagers, etc. But, it's up to you in the end.
Rules:
All the normal ones.
No killing a character without contacting them about it first.
If you character IS killed, and you'd like to make another one, just ask and we'll work something out...marry you in or something.
