Hey =]

I'm back again.

Nit-piks;

I grabbed the Sasha - I'd take out 'the'

moments ago - 'moments before' would sound better.

Thalia saw me and, her eyebrows once again drawn in a V, shushed me. - This sentence seems awkward. Maybe try re-arranging it. 'Thalia saw me and frowning again, she placed a finger to her lips to shush me.' - something along those lines anyway.

hadn’t’ - typo - no need for the apostrophe after the t.

we crashed - I'd add in 'had' after 'we'

Some stray dust from it’s passage seeped into my nostrils. - I don't get this sentence. Do you mean from a break in the bushes? - 'it's' should be 'its' too

fierce I froze - I'd add 'that' after 'fierce'

I squirmed and the bush rattled, a very small sound. - This doesn't sound right. Maybe describe the sound, 'I squirmed and the bush rattled as if a sudden breeze had swept through it.'

enmity - I've leant a new word :D (I had to look it up in the dictionary)

If we got caught we’d never hear the end of it from Ma. - I'd add a comma after 'caught'

After a heart-pounding few seconds, - I don't know if this works. Maybe - ' After a tense few seconds,'

Just as we thought we were safe, - I'd add 'though' after 'safe'

bushes where we hid. - 'bushes where we were hiding.'

him, too. - You don't need the comma after 'him'

I shivered, and the leaves of the bush quivered, almost, but not quite, like a breezed blowing past. - 'I shivered, and the leaves of the bush quivered as if a breeze had just blown threw it.'

I didn’t want to go stand by my sister (who, I admit, I admired, and wanted to be like which would be the reason why I followed her around all the time) where a stranger would scrutinize me, and make me feel awkward, and then they’d start to talk like I wasn’t even there. - I don't know if this reads right. Maybe try re-arranging it into smaller sentences so that it reads easier.

When I didn’t answer her in any way, she called again, her voice sharp with impatience, “Evie! Come here! Now!” - 'When I didn't answer her, she called again, her voice sharp with impatience. "Evie! Come here! Now!"
I took out the 'any way' and changed the comma after 'impatience' to a full stop. It gives the speech more punch.

rolled myself free - I don't know if 'rolled' sounds right. Maybe 'shook' or 'pulled'

I came to my knees in a pool of dust, coughed, and lifted my head. - 'I came to my knees in a pool of dust which caused me to cough as I lifted my head.'

More often that not, lately that had been her - 'More often than not lately, that had been her...'

beside mer. - 'beside her' ?

by her side, - 'to her side,'

quivering slightly, as I glanced at the stranger. - No need for the comma after 'slightly'

His face was still in the hood covered in shadow, but, so quickly - 'His face was still shadowed by the hood but, so quickly...'

I shivered again, that glimpse of his eyes not frightening me exactly, more like I got the sense that he could do horrible things if he chose, but, I also had the feeling that he wouldn’t unless he absolutely had to. - This sentence is really long. Maybe try breaking it up.

could care less - 'couldn't care less'

He was the predator, we were his prey. - I'd change the comma to 'and'

eyes told me. - 'eyes had told me'

bar - 'barn' ?

Finally, with one last huff, Thalia growled intolerantly, “In this land, sir, it is customary to tell who you are after someone else has introduced themselves.” - Change the comma after 'intolerantly' to a full stop and take away the comma after 'land'

hang, - 'hand' ?

Overall;
Please don't get put off by the amount of nit-piks - I tend to go overboard sometimes and most of them are my opinion so you don't have to listen.

I do still like this story though. I'm still curious to know who Malc is and why he collapsed on the hill.

“Y-you’re just a child!” the man exclaimed, not answering her question. “B-but such power…! I thought for sure…” - I so want to know what he means and what he was going to say!

I'll definitely be reading the next part!

Hey! Mimi here as requested :) Sorry this review took so long but my internet is slow at the moment -.-

I stood there for a moment not wanting to go down and then have Ma find out later, but not wanting to stay on the hill either. Finally, my loneliness won out, and just before scurrying down after Thalia, I grabbed [s]the[/s] Sasha in my hand with Marta. I scrambled down the embankment, weeds cracking in my wake, and into the same bushes that Thalia had gone into moments ago. Really liked the last line... just so you know :P

I crawled in, the leaves rustling as I moved forward. Thalia saw me and, her eyebrows once again drawn[s] in[/s] into a V, shushed me. That last sentence did not quite do it for me... Maybe you should change it to something along the lines of: When Thalia spotted me, she shushed me, her eyebrows once again drawn into a V We gazed with wide eyes at the stranger who was, by now, almost level with our hiding spot. It was a wonder that the person hadn’t’ seen us yet, what with all our noise-making when we crashed down the hillside. Then again, we had hidden behind the scant trees and the stranger looked like they were only concentrating on where they were going. Every few feet, the cloaked person stopped and swayed, but always continued on after a second or so. Loved the entire paragraph :D

It reached our spot and my heart pounded so loud in my chest I thought for sure it would give us away! Some stray dust from it’s passage seeped into my nostrils. What exactly do you mean by 'some strange dust from it's passage'? Do you mean the passage of the cloaked person? Maybe you should make it a tad more obvious? Don't know though because it could be just me :P I scrunched up my nose and squeezed my eyes shut, hoping to deter the urge to sneeze. It was [s]not[/s] no good. The tickling sensation grew worse and worse and I tugged on Thalia’s sleeve in a panic. She burnt me with the flames from her eyes, and I sat back, still fighting. I shifted quietly, hoping that would make it go away, but it only made it worse. I knew I couldn’t last any longer, it was just too hard.

“Ah-ah-ah-choo!” I sneezed.

Thalia whipped her head around and her expression was so fierce I froze, my finger under
my nose. I squirmed and the bush rattled, [s]a [/s] giving very small sound. Suddenly, I wondered if my sneeze had alerted the stranger to our presence. That last sentence did not make sense.. of course she was wondering if the sneeze had alerted the stranger of their presence, she did not just suddenly wonder this! Maybe you should change it to: I hoped with all my might that the sneeze had not alerted the stranger to our presence.

My worries weren’t in vain: the stranger had stopped and seemed to be waiting for something. Thalia and I froze, enmity forgotten for the moment, and threw each other terrified looks. If we got caught we’d never hear the end of it from Ma. After a heart-pounding few seconds, the stranger moved on and we gave a collective sigh of relief. Could not find anything wrong here! :)

Just as we thought we were safe, the figure whirled around and faced the bushes where we hid. We froze once more in shock, not daring to look at each other, or even to [s]barely [/s]breathe. The person took a step back toward us, then called out, “Who’s there?”

It had a deep voice, so we knew then that it was a man. He took another step and we shrank together, trying to become one with the dark shadows we hid in under our cover. Hmm... not too sure about that. 'Trying to become one with the dark shadows we hid in under our cover? Maybe you should change it to: trying to become part of the shadows we hid in. We could make out the bottom of his cloak, the dusty, worn path, and his booted feet as he took another step.

“Who’s there?” he called again, “I know you’re there-you can’t hide from me!” Another step. Why add a hyphen in between 'there' and 'you'?

And just like that, before I could stop her-nay, I don't understand that... 'her-nay'?
before I even knew what she was doing-Thalia burst from our hiding spot, and stood defiantly before the man. “Who’re you?” she asked, rather rudely I thought.

“Y-you’re just a child!” the man exclaimed, not answering her question. “B-but such power…! Remove the exclamation mark I thought for sure…”

“Who are you?” Thalia snapped at the man, who seemed taken aback by her abrupt nature. “What do you want?”

The man sighed, sounding exasperated at my sister -even I, being only six at the time, could tell that. “Why should I answer to [s]that of [/s] a child? There is no reason that I see!” he curtly replied.

Since I was still underneath the cover of bushes, I could only see their feet, and a little bit of their legs. Thalia’s stance looked determined, but the man’s was slightly bent, and he kept shifting his weight from side to side occasionally while Thalia stood without moving.

Thalia huffed and I saw her foot start to tap the ground when the man asked, “A better question, I should think, is who are you?”

My sibling continued her persistent foot tapping and I could have bet all I owned then and there that she was glowering at him, too.

“Who are you?” the man repeated, still ignoring my sister’s growing annoyance.

Thalia stood there, not moving an inch. After a moment’s silence, she said, “I am Thalia Brownstone, and this is—“she stuttered to a stop, realizing, I think, for the first time that I wasn’t there beside her. “Evie, come here!” she demanded.

I shivered, and the leaves of the bush quivered, almost, but not quite, like a [s]breezed[/s] breeze blowing past. I didn’t want to go stand by my sister (who, I admit, I admired, and wanted to be like which would be the reason why I followed her around all the time) where a stranger would scrutinize me, and make me feel awkward, and then they’d start to talk like I wasn’t even there. That last sentence was too long, trying split it up into smaller sentences.

When I didn’t answer her in any way, she called again, her voice sharp with impatience, “Evie! Come here! Now!”

I gulped and slowly rolled myself free from the tangling brown hands of my shelter. I came to my knees in a pool of dust, coughed, and lifted my head. Thalia was looking at me, impatience once again on here face, and I fleetingly wondered if she was going to wear that look every time she looked at me from now on. More often that not, lately that had been her only look for me, instead of the patient, kind expression that I’d come to know in years past. Silently, she flapped her hand at me, beckoning me to stand beside mer. I got up off the ground and unwillingly went by her side, quivering slightly, as I glanced at the stranger. Remove the comma after 'slightly'... besides that I really liked this paragraph!

He was tall and his cloak, I could now tell, was made from wool and dyed a dark gray-black. His face was still in the hood covered in shadow, but, so quickly I almost thought I’d imagine it, I caught a glimpse of his eyes. They flashed darkly once in the sunlight and then were driven back into the shadows. I shivered again, that glimpse of his eyes not frightening me exactly, more like I got the sense that he could do horrible things if he chose, but, I also had the feeling that he wouldn’t unless he absolutely had to. The sensation reminded me of when you’re talking to someone and they seem to pay attention because they look at you, but really their mind is somewhere else and they truly could care less what you have to say. This stranger would be the one who was pretending to listen, and everyone else would be nothing compared to him. Did not really understand that last sentence... try re wording it. We were like flies just waiting to get swatted. He was the predator, we were his prey. That was what the flash of his eyes told me. There were many ways to describe it, but basically it all came down to a few things. He was powerful, and he was dangerous, not someone to be trifled with.

I shivered again and Thalia, in a gesture of comfort, put her arm around me as she said, “This is my sister, Evangeline.” I made a face at how she introduced me, and I could tell by the wicked way she was grinning that it was payback for when I wouldn’t come out of the bushes.

Even after Thalia’s introduction, the man said nothing. I could tell it was getting on Thalia’s nerves; every few seconds she’d let out a little huff of air, and her arms were crossed over her chest. I knew she was irked because that was the way she reacted to me one time when we were helping Pa in the bar, and I couldn’t shovel the old hay fast enough to suit her when she needed to put fresh down.

Finally, with one last huff, Thalia growled intolerantly, “In this land, sir, it is customary to tell who you are after someone else has introduced themselves.”

The man snapped quite suddenly, “I still see no reason to explain myself to a girl of your stature!” Then after a moment in which we were all silent, the man sighed. “I am sorry,” he said. “My name…is Malc and I—“

Unexpectedly, he broke off, letting out a moan that was more of a scratching cry than anything else. He clutched at this stomach and side with one [s]hang[/s] hand, and stretched out the other, grasping the air for something that wasn’t there. Malc stumbled and fell to one knee while we watched, dumbfounded, at the scene unfolding before us. Slowly, he sank into the dust, his dark cloak billowing out with pockets of air as he finally crumpled and lay motionless on the road.

AWESOME job!
I loved every bit of it! Sorry if I nit-picked it abit but it's only because I really like it and want it to be amazing. Your only problem is the comma thing but after a bit of practice, you can get the hand of using smaller sentences instead of lot's of then joined together by many commas! :P
PM me if you need anything (and when the next part is up  )

Heya!

I loved reading this! It's now, officially, one of my favourite stories. Ahem, now onto the nit-picks. They've really already been caught above so there isn't much left for me to say.

Finally, my loneliness won out, and just before scurrying down after Thalia, I grabbed the Sasha in my hand with Marta.

The Sasha? Perhaps you could take out the, the.

She burnt me with the flames from her eyes, and I sat back, still fighting.

I love this sentence. She burnt me with the flames from her eyes. It's so neat sounding.

“Ah-ah-ah-choo!” I sneezed.

In my opinion, I don't think you need the I sneezed part. From the paragraph above it, we know whose going to sneeze. But it's entirely up to you ^_^

We froze once more in shock, not daring to look at each other, or even to barely breathe.

I don't think you need the comma before or.

Thalia saw me and, her eyebrows once again drawn in a V, shushed me

I know this has been pointed out to you before but it does sound awkward. I had to read it at least twice.

Okay, everything was covered by those above so I'll just stop here.

I really enjoy the plot so far. You do use rather long sentences, but who doesn't make that mistake? I love the relationship that's between the two sisters. I know I already like Malc. He's my favourite.

Please PM me when you post more up. I love this.

Happy Writing!

Hiya! A bit late, but, I am here!

I grabbed the Sasha in my hand with Marta.

Nice little characterization that she grabs the dolls as well, but later on, those dolls are missing in action. Let's bring them back into the mix, shall we? :D

It reached our spot and my heart pounded so loud in my chest I thought for sure it would give us away!

~ Your heart is in your chest, no? You can delete that mention, since it is redundent. ^_^

~ I would delete this exclamation point. Ever notice that, when you read, you "hear" a sentence with an exclamation point differently? I think this sentence would read better without the exclamation point. :)

Some stray dust from it’s passage seeped into my nostrils.

Who/what is "it"? Yes, you keep referring to the person walking as "it," but since you haven't mentioned him for awhile, you don't know you're still referring to that. ;)

It was not good.

What was not good, and why? ^_^

She burnt me with the flames from her eyes, and I sat back, still fighting.

You're missing any mention that Thalia looked back at your MC.

“Ah-ah-ah-choo!” I sneezed.

I think this would have more punch if you nixed the "dialogue" for the sneeze. We'd get more a sense of panic, since it would be like a gunshot. A rule of thumb is: The shorter the lines/paragraphs, the more punch they have.

We froze once more in shock, not daring to look at each other, or even to barely breathe.

"Barely breath" mixed with "or even" doesn't really add up. I would delete "barely" to make things less redundent. ^_^

The person took a step back toward us, then called out, “Who’s there?”

Nix "back"; it's confusing.

“Who’s there?” he called again, “I know you’re there-you can’t hide from me!”

Your dashes are a bit odd in this story. They need to be longer, for one thing (about this long: --) and they need to have a space between them and the word after. Just like any other punctuation mark. They way they are now, it's like a hyphen.

Thalia burst from our hiding spot, and stood defiantly before the man.

You could nix this comma.

There is no reason that I see!” he curtly replied.

You don't need that tag, since it's been established he's speaking.

Thalia huffed and I saw her foot start to tap the ground when the man asked, “A better question, I should think, is who are you?”

Is Thalia so stubourn that she doesn't hear when he said there was no point in answering her? ^_^ I would think a retaliation is in order. Right now, things are feeling detached.

“I am Thalia Brownstone, and this is—“she stuttered to a stop,

Yay! A proper dash! :D A little tip: When you're working in Word, put an "I" or something at the end of the dash just to get the quotes correct.

I didn’t want to go stand by my sister (who, I admit, I admired, and wanted to be like which would be the reason why I followed her around all the time) where a stranger would scrutinize me,

I don't know. I usually don't like seeing brackets in prose. Usually, you can just use commas instead. Up to you if you keep them though. ^_^

More often that not, lately that had been her only look for me,

Move the comma after "not" to after "lately."

Silently, she flapped her hand at me, beckoning me to stand beside her.

~ I would think an action is silent already. ;)

~ I changed "mer" to "her"

That was what the flash of his eyes told me. [s]There were many ways to describe it, but basically it all came down to a few things.[/s] He was powerful, and he was dangerous, not someone to be trifled with.

You've done such a good job describing things, but the crossed out bit seems to drag things down. We can already picture those eyes very well, and they give us a wonderful window into his personality. That extra bit is just re-stating the obviouse. :D

I knew she was irked because that was the way she reacted to me one time when we were helping Pa in the barn, and I couldn’t shovel the old hay fast enough to suit her when she needed to put fresh down.

~ The wording here is a bit strange. Make is clearer that it's a flash-back, and cut out some extra description (like "to me" after "reacted"). It's making this sentence hard to read.

~ Added an "n" to "bar"

He clutched at this stomach and side with one hand, and

Changed "hang" to "hand."

Slowly, he sank into the dust, his dark cloak billowing out with pockets of air as he finally crumpled and lay motionless on the road.

I'd like a little more description on his position. Is he on his side? His back? Face down? Tell us please! ^_^

~~

Let me see if I can comment on this absolutly wonderful piece of writing!

Sentences: There are some places in here where things are unclear. You tend to use a handful too many extra bits of description which just make things confusing. That issue is pretty rare though, so you just need to watch for it.

One thing though, proofread this backwards to catch any spelling mistakes. The reason I say backwards is so you're reading the actual word, not following the story.

Description: You have got some very, very good description here. I could see everything. You just need to watch that you don't over-describe things. Usually, if you've just spent a paragraph on something, you don't need to give us the shortened version of what impression was left on the character. You've already done a good job before hand. ;)

Characters: Hmm, Thalia seems to be losing some of her eight-year-old status in this part. Namely, when she doesn't shorten any words and uses longer (and more grammatically correct) sentences then nobles use.

Malc is a very interesting puzzle you've set out. Not too much, not too little. And with the lines he's got, you just know something good's going to happen. ^_^

Overall: I had a really hard time reviewing this, actually! Everything was just so good! I love how you're just slowly playing things out and giving us a puzzle to solve about your characters. And the cut-off point was perfect.

Questions? PM me.

Hey there! Sorry I was so late in getting to this chapter, I’ve just been so busy of late… XD God, I’m tired. In any case, at least I’m here now, right? Better late than never.

Okay! This was definitely an interesting chapter, I can’t wait to find out more about Malc—he seems like an interesting character, and I really want to know what his situation is. I think you’ve done a good job of drawing us in with your plotline.

I also think the characterization is really strong between the two sisters—I could really feel for Evie in her struggles with the growing distance between her and her sister. I could also see really clearly how much she admired and loved her sister, which just makes it even more painful for her to see that she’s beginning to lose her. I’m interested to see where this part of their character is going—especially now that we know this bit about Thalia’s mysterious power.

I did find a couple of small critiques:

I grabbed the Sasha in my hand with Marta.

I agree with Rosey that this is a good way to show her personality, but “the Sasha” sounded a little awkward to me, I’d get rid of “the.”

And just like that, before I could stop her-nay, before I even knew what she was doing-Thalia burst from our hiding spot, and stood defiantly before the man.

I’m not sure about the “nay”—it sounds a little archaic and out of place. I know this is supposed to be a medieval fantasy series, but nobody talks that way in the story so far, and none of the other narration has had phrases like that, so it comes off as a little random.

Silently, she flapped her hand at me, beckoning me to stand beside mer.

I think you meant “her” XD.

He clutched at this stomach and side with one hang,

…and “hand”.

But other than a few small typos, I think this was a great chapter! I’ll gladly read more. ^_^ Whenever I finally get the chance. >_< See you in the next chapter! ^_^
