Starlight Requiem
Chapter One
Rosalyn sat in class anxiously waiting for the bell to ring. It was her last class of the day, and she was tired and wanted to go straight home. This last school week had really managed to tire her out.
She looked off to the side and as usual three seats down sat Alexander, a popular snob that thought he was the greatest thing ever. He always sat there acting like everyone was unworthy of being in his presence. He was just some rich kid that thought he was the greatest thing ever and every girl in the whole school would always swoon over him.
Worst of all Rosalyn felt strangely drawn to him. Sure, he was probably the typical teenager that had loving parents, a huge room, and everything he could ever want, but still wants even more attention than he already gets. All of that annoyed her to no end, yet something about him seemed to attract her. She wanted to get to know him better, and maybe if she did he wouldn’t be as bad as she thought he was, but deep down she knew that someone as cool and respected as him would never talk to someone as unpopular and hated as her.
She glanced at the clock once again. Five more minutes she thought to herself. She paused for a moment to glance back at Alexander, but when she looked he wasn’t in his seat. That’s odd she thought to herself he never gets up until the bell rings. She looked back up to the clock, but she didn’t see the clock; because standing right there in front of her was Alexander.
“Hi,” he said casually.
“Umm . . . h-hi,” Rosalyn stuttered.
“Are you doing anything tomorrow?” He asked.
“N-no . . .” Rosalyn continued to stutter.
“Meet me tomorrow at the park, twelve O’ clock.” He said then walked away, as if he was only walking by.
Rosalyn sat still in her seat unable to move; she only stared straight ahead unable to believe Alexander not only just talked to her, but basically asked her on a date. The bell rang, but she still just sat there in amazement and disbelief.
After a few moments passed she finally got up from her seat, grabbed her backpack, and ran out of the class room. Most the way home Rosalyn couldn’t stop thinking about how Alexander had actually seemingly asked her on a date, and she couldn’t think of why he would ask her, of all people, out on a date. He was beautiful in every way. He had straight midnight black hair that went slightly past his shoulders, his eyes were amber, almost golden, unless he was mad, then his eyes seemed to take on a reddish tinge. He was six foot three, slender yet muscular at the same time. Everything about him seemed so perfect, at least for outward appearances. She wasn’t sure how well she might like him once she got to know him.
She wasn’t popular at all, and not only that she couldn’t think of a single pretty thing about her Nothing stood out about her, except her breasts. Which were fairly large considering her size, so most guys tried to be nice to her to see if they could get into her pants.
Rosalyn couldn’t help but wonder if that was why Alexander asked her on the date. She didn’t think so; sure he seemed pretty arrogant but she didn’t think he was that cruel. So she decided not to think about why he asked her to meet with him tomorrow, but mainly focus on the fact that he did. She walked the rest of the way home smiling, thinking about what different outcomes tomorrow might have.
But that happiness soon faded as she stood outside her house, wondering what her mother had in store for her today. Rosalyn never understood her mother, ever since she was born she couldn’t remember her mother holding her or showing her any form of love.
Rosalyn opened the door with a heavy sigh expecting her mother to be right there and waiting. Unfortunately, she was right.
“Where have you been?” Rosalyn’s mother began to yell.
“Walking home, just like I always do, Mother. What else?” Rosalyn asked her mother mockingly.
“I need you to go into you room and begin your studies,” her mother stated simply.
“For what? Mother, it’s the weekend, can’t I have any breaks?” Rosalyn asked impatiently, wishing her mother would just leave her alone.
“For your classes, Rosalyn darling, you already know that you need to do you best in school,” her mother began to lecture.
“Mother, starting from the moment I get home until dad gets home all I ever do is study! I want a life, mother! I’m a teenager not a lab rat!” Rosalyn said, raising her voice as she began to walk upstairs to her room.
“Don’t you dare talk back to me, young lady!” Her mother yelled, beginning to get aggravated as well.
“Just leave me alone, Mother!” Rosalyn yelled as she stormed into her room.
“Fine, but I don’t want to hear your complaining when you’re living out on the streets!” her mother yelled in return.
“As long as I’m away from you, I’ll be happy!” Rosalyn screamed as she slammed the door to her room shut.
Stupid mom, Rosalyn thought to herself. I have straight A’s, what more does she want from me? Is it really my fault that I’m sick and tired of trying to please her?
Rosalyn sat in her room for a few minutes, and then decided she’d rather go for a walk. Rosalyn took a few steps down the staircase and paused to listen. Upstairs she heard water running, and figured her mom had begun to take a shower and would not notice if Rosalyn slipped out for a while.
Once outside, Rosalyn began walking towards the park for no reason in particular, other than she had no where else to go. Rosalyn attempted to calm herself down on the way there. But she did not succeed. When Rosalyn arrived the park was empty, though this did not surprise her, but it did make her feel uncomfortable.
Rosalyn strolled over to a giant oak tree near the edge of the park; it had always been Rosalyn’s favorite place to sit and think. Rosalyn looked around nervously, and then swiftly leaped into the tree before anyone passing by could notice.
Rosalyn quickly settled into her favorite spot amidst the tree’s giant branches, and began to reflect upon her last school week. She had stayed up until midnight almost every night trying to finish projects that she had procrastinated on. The stupidity of her actions was finally beginning to take a toll on her as she sat among the tree’s huge branches. Without noticing Rosalyn had begun to drift to sleep. It was almost as if time had stopped; anything could have happened in those moments of consciousness and Rosalyn wouldn’t have noticed.
When Rosalyn opened her eyes again it was already dark out. She glanced at her watch, not really caring what time it was. Nine O’clock… great, Dad should be home and Mom’s probably bitching to him about what a disrespectful daughter he raised. I guess I should head home.
Rosalyn leaped out of tree, without noticing who was around. She suddenly found herself staring at Alexander’s usual scowl. Rosalyn stood frozen in shock for a few seconds as her blood began rushing to her cheeks.
“How did you get up there?” Alexander questioned, as though he didn’t really care for the answer.
“Huh?” Rosalyn mumbled in reply, still dazed from being caught off guard.
“The tree, how did you get up in it?” Alexander asked, beginning to get irritated.
“Oh, I just jumped…” Rosalyn said bashfully. Alexander looked up into the tree as though he were very confused.
“Is something the matter?” Rosalyn asked, worry seeping into her face.
“No, just wondering how is it you were able to get into a tree where it’s nearest branch is 12 feet off the ground by ‘just jumping’,” Alexander stated simply.
Rosalyn instantly gasped in shock; she couldn’t believe how easily she’d forgotten that a normal human could not perform such a task.
“Um, well actually I have to get going right now, so if you’ll excuse me,” Rosalyn said quickly, and turned to walk away as fast as she could.
“And if I won’t? What then?” Alexander asked mysteriously.
“W-what are you talking about?” Rosalyn stuttered, fear had begun to show itself in her eyes.
“And if I won’t excuse you? What will you do then?” Alexander repeated.
“Please stop playing around, I really have to go. My dad is going to freak out.” Rosalyn began pleading.
“Who said I was playing around?” Alexander questioned his voice low and deep.
Rosalyn began to tremble as she stared into Alexander’s colorless eyes.
“P-please, just let me go home. I’ll do anything,” tear began to stream down Rosalyn’s face, “just please let me go home.”
Alexander began to take a step towards Rosalyn. A scream began to rise in her throat, but it could not escape her lips. Rosalyn could feel herself trying to scream, yet there was no sound. Alexander took another step towards Rosalyn, and she instantly flinched away.
Alexander held out his hand towards Rosalyn, not moving at all otherwise.
“I won’t hurt you Rosalyn, trust me.” Alexander said quietly, never moving.
Rosalyn stared at Alexander, the raw terror in her eyes slowly began to fade and she could feel herself get a grip on reality once again. Slowly Rosalyn began to take a step towards Alexander, never taking her eyes off of him.
“Rosalyn, quickly... please.” Alexander mumbled quickly trying to express his sudden urgency.
Rosalyn looked deep into his eyes and nearly ran the last few steps towards him and unknowingly wrapped her arms around him. Alexander grabbed a hold of Rosalyn and quickly leaped into a nearby bush.
“Alexander what’s-” Alexander quickly covered Rosalyn’s mouth and looked into her eyes.
“Stay quiet and don’t move.” Alexander whispered under his breath. Rosalyn nodded in response to his request and simply stayed in his arms, waiting for his slight panic to wear off.
“Rosalyn,” Alexander called as he gently shook her arms. Rosalyn looked up at him, not entirely sure of what was going on.
“What happened?” Rosalyn whispered, still trembling.
“It’s not what happened; it’s what could have happened.” Alexander tried to explain calmly. He looked into Rosalyn’s eyes, and a strange feeling of overwhelming trust swept though her as she stared back into his.
“Are you mad?” Rosalyn asked quietly.
“What?” Alexander asked, looking at Rosalyn like she’d lost her mind.
“Your eyes, they’re kind of reddish, so I was wondering if maybe you were mad because your eyes always seem to start turning red when you get angry.” Rosalyn tried to explain without sounding like a stalker of some kind.
“No, I’m just a little tense right now,” Alexander sighed, “Come on, I’ll walk you home. It’s too dangerous for you to walk around this late by yourself.”
Rosalyn followed him obediently but slowly. Alexander suddenly turned around and grabbed her hand and began pulling her in the general direction of her house. Rosalyn tried to ask him about what happened again or what was going to happen, but Alexander didn’t turn around again.
When they arrived at Rosalyn’s house it was already midnight, and every light in her house was off.
“Will you be able to get in?” Alexander asked as he released Rosalyn’s hand.
“Yeah, I have a key,” Rosalyn mumbled quietly to herself.
She wanted to ask Alexander why he was still there, why was he trying to help her, and so many other questions that filled her mind.
Once she got the door unlocked Alexander turned and began to walk away.
“Alexander!” Rosalyn called out with out thinking, instantly covering her mouth and trying to hide her blush.
Alexander turned around slowly to face Rosalyn.
“What is it?” He asked patiently.
“W-will I still get to see you tomorrow?” Rosalyn managed to say without it being entirely incoherent. Alexander leaned his head to the side and smirked.
“If that’s what you want.” He said softly, “Same time and place okay?”
Rosalyn’s eyes instantly brightened with excitement at the thought of seeing him again.
“Okay!” Rosalyn chirped, “You’ll tell me about what happened tomorrow, too, won’t you?”
Alexander smirked at her as though he were up to no good and enjoying every bit of it.
“If you tell me how you ‘just jumped’ into that oak tree at the part,” Alexander replied and walked off.
Rosalyn froze on her front porch; she had completely forgotten about that. Suddenly fear rippled though every vein in her body. She couldn’t tell Alexander. How would she ever be able to explain a phenomenon like this to him? She eventually regained control of herself and went inside the house and stalked into her room.
She looked around her room and pulled out a large black dog stuffed animal from under her blankets. She sat down on her bed with it in her arms and began to sob. How could she face Alexander tomorrow knowing he knew a part of her secret? She tried for over an hour to think of some other way to explain what she had done, but came up empty handed. Finally giving in Rosalyn cried herself to sleep. Alexander seemed like such a nice person deep down, but surely that would change tomorrow when she saw him and explained that she wasn’t human.
