A History of Mercenaries, Vol. XI. wrote:Following the death of Emperor Joseph the VI, the Sunoli Empire degenerated into anarchy. Centuries of feuds, contained by the Emperors, now spilled out as people battled to lay claim to the empire.

So began the golden age of mercenaries. With the disintegration of the Emperor's legions, there came a sudden influx of unemployed soldiers for hire. Some units, like the Silver Eagles, became mercenaries as a regiment, while other units simply were just glorified criminals, like Chester's Chisels...

...Emerging later was a group known as the Grey Ghosts. Led by the infamous Specter Grey, this small group of mercenaries would eventually play a pivotal role in the future of Sunoli..."

Plot: The story follows a mercenary group as it grows. Think of a fantasy A-Team. Some missions are taken for money, others may be taken for charity.

Setting: The Sunoli Empire is a renaissance era magical society. The Upper Class relies on the more dependable (but more expensive) magic, while the Lower Class relies on the cheaper but less dependable technology.

Magic: Magic is a complicated affair. Spells can be cast by drawing intricate patterns with symbols, hand gestures, and chants. The stronger the spell, the longer it takes to cast and the more complex all aspects of the casting becomes. The strongest spells utilize many magicians, dancing and chanting on runic patterns for days at a time. It is extremely rare and prohibitively expensive.

Technology: Swords are still predominant, firearms are crude, ineffective, and expensive. The best gun is the Cannon. Crossbows and longbows would still be in use.

Mythical Species: Mythical Species are present. If your species tends to feed on humans, then they will probably be targeted for extermination. Dragons, Vampires, and Werewolves fall under this category. Missions may involve killing any of these species, or at least neutralizing them.

Rules:

1. No team killing. Only the creating author may kill their character.

2. Stay in character. Keep in mind who your character is, their relation to other characters, and the setting that all of them are in. If you have questions about a character, then please feel free to ask their author about them.

3. Out of Character (OOC) remarks should only be written in parenthesis or brackets to indicate that they are not part of the story.

4. Rating: This storybook is rated PG. I want you to be able to show this to your grand children without freaking them out. Please censor profanity, to something like this: "Grif swore loudly as he marched towards the rating..."

Sex scenes and excessively violent descriptions (rape, mutilation, etc.) will be reported to Big Brother.

5. Stay current. The storyline is always progressing, so your posts should always progress the storyline. Always end your posts a little further along than the post before you did.

6. New/Inactive Characters. Our storybook will have missions. At the beginning of a new mission, people will be asked to submit character profiles again. New authors may submit characters at this time, while inactive characters will be dropped.

7. God moding is defined as forcing a character to do/say something which is out of character for the character. If there is a problem, please work it out with the other author.

8. If you have any questions, you're probably not alone. Ask and we'll work something out.

Please post character profiles.

Name: Specter Grey

Age: 32.

Gender: Male

Occupation: Mercenary Leader

Species: Human.

Appearance: At this time, he is simply dressed. He has no armor and his only weapon is a sword. He has a short trimmed beard, with brown hair and brown eyes.

Bio: Educated as an officer in the Imperial Legions, he found success hard to come by, simply because his radical ideas were not received well by his superiors. He left the army and began work as a free agent. After a high profile hit, he decided to go into business for himself.

His first few ops were disasters, as the men he hired proved to be unreliable. He has put out feelers to people he has worked with in the past about working with him.

Name: Maria "Max" Blue

Age: 19

Gender: female

Occupation: Normal Solider up for hire with assassin like abilities

Species: Human...or is she?

Appearance: She has a plate that wraps around her waist that she had gotten during her rogue days. She had lifted it off a bad soilder who tried to slice her up, into tiny pieces. She has long brown hair and eyes that constanly change color and are always differing colors from one another. She wears pants tucked into a pair of leather boots and wears shirts tucked under her armor. She hides knives everywhere on her body.

Bio: Just two years before she thought all the soldiers and units were all bad and terrible. She as an orphan and has never met her parents who abandoned her at a busy and abusive orphanage. She ran away from that and became a rogue or assassin for hire but abandoned that when a solider took a blow for her.

She can be sort of bipolar and can be ready for anything that comes her way. She laughs and pokes fun at anything, she says it's stress release and "mark of true friendship". She usually makes a good scout because she can climb really well and use weapons well in close combat.

Name: Tristan 'Bors' Waylock

Age: 23

Gender: Male

Occupation: Mercenary.

Species: Human

Appearance: Tall with pale skin. He has golden eyes, and white hair that looks like this:
http://UVER.deviantart.com/art/Kakashi- ... 2-80758259
He wears brown leather pants, and a leather jacket with big collars that he turns up over his face. Sometimes he puts a light breastplate over his jacket. He carries a pistol (BTW what type of weapons do they have? revolvers or flintlocks?) allot of knives and a long sword with a slightly curve. Sometimes he uses a short recurve bow.

Personality: All I will say now is that he is a very conflicted person.

Bio: Was the son of a wealthy merchant that joined the army because he was bad at making deals. On his first missions he proved himself to be good at commanding his fellow troops on the field and was promoted. His next mission was to find a demon that had been terrorizing a vilage
Pic Here (http://www.onlineghibli.com/mononoke_hi ... onBoar.jpg)
The fight started out horribly and within minutes Tristan was the only one left alive. The demon got ahold of him and branded him. He killed it and found that it was a boar demon. Over the next few days he found out that the mark gave him speed and strength faster than that of a normal human, but when it covered his body he would die. It made him have an uncontrolable temper, the problem is, is that anger makes the mark grow, killing him faster. He adopted the demons name as his own. He works as a mercenary specializeing in scouting and assassinations.

That is a long bio, but its needed. again, if its not ok, I'll change it. If anyones wondering, The idea came from Princess Mononoke.

Gender: Male

Occupation: Archer/Prospective Mercenary

Species: Centaur

Appearance: Well built, young looking. Does not wear clothing, but keeps bow and quiver on his back. Various geometric tatoos on his body.

Bio: Kicked out of his herd when he turned 18, Orelaus has been moving about for the past two years, searching for something to allow him to gain glory. The life of a mercenary has attracted his attention. He has been scouting around for a prospective group, looking for a leader to accept him.

Orelaus's skills with the bow are quite proficient. He also has an ability to communicate with animals and can survive in the wilderness for months with next to nothing. He does have a bit of a temper, as all centaurs do.

This is not a fan-fiction for any book or story. Instead, it borrows from the concept behind "The A-Team" an action television show made in the 80's. I recommend watching episodes of "Burn Notice" and "The A-Team" both of which are available for free at hulu.

Damar: I'm not sure Specter would trust a vampire. Because Vampires do things to humans like they did to Tristian, it would be very difficult, if not impossible to let one wander around. I'd like you to try writing with a different character instead. Trust is the most critical area here.

Conrad: I've never ever worked with a Centaur character before, I'm interested in seeing how it works out.

Lizzifer: Specter is very progressive, in the sense that he doesn't care if a character is a woman or not. Indeed, he would be very willing to hire women, simply because they can go places, find things, and do things that our male characters simply can not do.

Pieman: Very glad to work with you again, your character will probably be one of the first that Specter finds.

I'm still waiting for more profiles.

Name: Dale Cardoner

Age: 30

Gender: Male

Occupation: Mercenary

Species: Human.

Appearance: His clothing is simple and utilitarian. He wears leather armour over his chest and carries a broadsword. He has thick, messy black hair, green eyes and stubble, and stands at 6'2".

Bio: He started out as a grunt in the Legions, a general entry soldier with very little going for him. He managed to work his way up through the ranks to that of lieutenant before his 'discharge', and even met Specter Grey once. His discharge was effected when it was suggested by another officer that he was collaborating with the enemy. He was to be executed for it, but was smuggled out of the prison by a former comrade. He spends most of his time in bars recently, caught between drinking and looking for work.

He keeps numerous contacts in the underground, even one in Chester's Chisels, continuing the practice that had seen him expelled from the army in the first place, but able to access information or equipment without too much trouble.

Name: Zekharyah Gaunt

Age: Mid-30s

Gender: Male

Occupation: Former Knight turned Sellsword

Species: Human

Appearance: Image

Very tall and bulky. Wears dark tunics, with chainmail armour and a long, sheepskin overcoat. Armed with a plain longsword in a scabbard and a long dagger in his boot.

Biography: Zekharyah, under the Sunoli Empire, was a Knight in the religious military Order of the Light. Originally a pious and honourable servant to the Order, Zekharyah's naive eyes were opened when he saw the slaughter of countless innocent civilians during the Siege of Yigamesh. All his teachings thus turned worthless, Zekharyah fled the order and revoked his sacred vows, taking on Mercenary work when the Empire fell to hide his old identity and use the work as a way to attack the hypocritical Order at any opportunity, and seek out those who ordered the mindless killing of thousands of civilians.

Skills & Talents: As a trained Knight, Zekharyah is proficient in many different arms. He is deadly with the sword, a highly-skilled horserider, and competent with the bow. He rejects the new technology of gunpowder and has no time for such weapons. In armed fights he is aggressive to the point of recklessness, risking himself to land killing blows within the first few seconds of conflict. His strokes are usually fast and powerful, but this makes him vulnerable to drawn-out battles, as his aggressive attacks tire him out quickly.

Personality: Zekharyah is unpredictable. He has few friends, and keeps himself to himself, preferring contacts to be mere business partners rather than engaging in personal relationships. As such he is usuaully distant and cold to strangers. Zekharyah's past has made him reckless with his life and he often takes decisions with very little thought, prefering instant action to long, drawn-out planning. This impetuous nature puts him at odds with calmer types. His mission to destroy the Order takes over most of his thinking.
