Town of Dissident
Act I
Part II

Characters brought up:
Kas- Brindel’s daughter.
Brindel- Kas’ father.
Kanen- Supervisor of tow affairs.

(Scene opens on a small bedroom, a girl in her late teenage years enters. She is sorting through a large chest of clothes, throwing several garments behind her. An older man enters silently through the door. He curiously watches her for a brief period, than speaks.)

Brindel: I have naught to see such ruckus from you since you were one with my knees.

Kas: [Turns around surprised, then relaxes.] God forgive me for stirring in such a manner, father, but I have yet to find an item that means much to me.

Brindel: Stored with your gowns?

Kas: [Tenses] I….

Brindel: [Slightly angrily] You have been among peasants again, have you not? I warned thou of acquainting that woodcutter again. I…

Kas: Father, I beg you…

Brindel: Bread, water, cloth, roof, all has been provided to you, Kas, but now you insist upon disobedience. I will not have you a child in the eyes of your elders.

Kas: Nor would I father, but you must listen…..

Brindel: [Ignores her as he bends down and picks up a sealed envelope off the floor. Kas‘ name is written on the back.] Is this your valuable? Is this the priceless article you toss aside our gifts for. [He beckons at the many heaps of cloth scattered around on the floor.]

Kas: [Eyes on the sealed letter, opens her mouth to speak, but remains quiet.]

Brindel: [Tears the letter open, and stares at the paper.]

Kas: [Watches her father, her mouth open in a protesting expression.]

Brindel: You of all people know I am no scholar, Kas. [Hands her the letter.] Read it aloud.

Kas: [Looking from the open letter to her father.] But…..

Brindel: Read it child!

Kas: [Stares at her father, then proceeds to read the letter.] Addressed to the household of Brindel. [Pauses] Recent dissident has occurred involving the woodcutter Adam, who claims to be in relations with your daughter, Kas. If his words prove honest than send word, immediately, to Kranen, Supervisor of Town Affairs. -Kranen

Kas: Saint heed my woe! Father, we must send word for his release if he….

Brindel: Nay! Nay, daughter! For where will respect come if I am to help this filth come back within reach of my daughter?

Kas: If nothing you will do, then never shall I respect your will.

Brindel: Let it be then, however, if you ever prove disloyal to my command again then I will see to it that you are cut off from our inheritance! [Grabs letter from Kas, and tears it into several pieces. He throws the shreds on the floor as he storms from the room.]

Kas: [Stands still, obviously overwhelmed and upset by what has taken place.]
