Simon I
As I walked into the room, all was quiet. I made my way in slowly analyzing my surroundings. The students were avoiding eye contact with me and their ever faint whispers seemed to echo through my mind. I placed my briefcase on the desk and went to open it up gradually. The students seemed to jump at the opening of the clasps and I gave them all a sinister smile. It was then that I realized our secret wasn’t a secret anymore; I may as well have taken myself to the police station.
“Today class, we’re going to be learning about murder”, I tried to hide my love for the word as I spoke. I went to the chalk board and wrote it in thick white letters. Admiring its beauty for a second, I turned back to the class. They all seemed to be shaking on the inside. A lot of them had turned a pale green and I could see them starting to break down in fear right in front of my eyes. It was magnificent. I had always thrived off other people’s fright and misery and it was safe to say that it was the perfect feeling. The room was so thick with horror; I could have carved the atmosphere into tiny little pieces, just like we did with her body the night before. They all knew what I had done, they all knew it, but what was even better, is they all knew I was capable of doing it again; perhaps capable of doing it to one of them, perhaps capable of doing it to all of them. The feeling was simply overpowering that I nearly cried.
Just as I was going to speak again, I saw Bailey in the hallway. Her gorgeous long brown hair was swept neatly up into a pony-tail that swung from side to side, synchronized with her every step. Even though she was petite, she always stood upright with her shoulders back. It made her look confident and sure of herself, even though she was anything but. I remember the first time I laid eyes on her. It was my first day of teaching at the school, second period. I was taking Year Nine literature and was a little nervous that I’d repeat the same mistake as I did last time; but I was sure to keep my mind on the job, so I did my best to not pay too much attention to any one student. That was until Miss Bailey Jade Saunders came into class late. She apologized to me in her sweet, soft voice and made her way very quietly to a seat in the very corner of the front row. As soon as I had seen her, I knew she would be my next dilemma. And by the end of that class; she really was my next perfect, little problem.
As I stood silently in front of my class, I held back my urge to wave at her. Not only did she not see me, I wasn’t going to go out of my way to confirm something, which at the time could have been dismissed as a ‘rumor’.
“Hey, Mr. Johnson, what’s going on with you and Psycho Saunders?” One of the pupils, Jeremy Felling, had been watching me watch Bailey. Jeremy was the only boy that ever had enough courage to question me during class and now, question me after what had happened. Normally the class would have immaturely sniggered at the sarcastic name, but they were all too frightened to breathe, let alone sneer at Jeremy’s stupidity. Bailey had developed the name Psycho Saunders simply because of the way she acted somewhat different to her peers. Although her physical appearance was flawless, her personality built a brick wall between her and the rest of the world. Her long history of self harm was the main thing that had given her the horrible nick name, but I had never seen her as Psychotic; in fact I saw beauty in the way she was able to carve little stories into her arm. I found beauty in the way she handled things so imperfectly, I found beauty for her being different. I loved the way she was messed up, I loved the way she was messed up like I was; I could relate to her. We were sick together.
“How many times have I told you to NOT call her that?” I slammed my fist on the desk with each word, making the students jump with each thud. Jeremy on the other had didn’t seem too effected by my outburst, which infuriated me. I made my way to his desk, humming my little tune. I bent down so I was at eye level with Jeremy and whispered softly, but harshly,
“Jeremy, I know what you have heard and I can assure you its all true. If I were in your position, I would be careful what you say...unless you want to end up scattered through this town as well.” With that he turned a sickly olive and he quickly diverted his attention to his hands that were clasped tightly together. I stood up straight once again and wandered back to my desk.
Glancing out the window once again I looked out into the hallway. Bailey was gone. Pity as it was, it was always easier teaching without her in my sight. She distracted me.
Bailey II
Making my way up the steps proved to be a difficult task that morning. My head felt heavy, my stomach was churning and I was unusually dizzy. Nausea wasn’t uncommon for me in the early mornings, but this was more than nausea; it was a feeling I couldn’t describe. Perhaps it was due to lack of sleep, perhaps not. I had slept terribly the night before. As soon as I had gotten home after Simon had dropped me off, there was a part of me so awake, that I didn’t think I would get to sleep for the next month.
The grey-blue corridors of school made me feel particularly ill. The depressive dull colour seemed to suck me into the walls; they made me even more nauseous then I was before. I was late for class again, a regular occurrence for me. I drudged slowly down the hall way passed classrooms filled with the same robotic students. Day in day out they sat in their chairs; harassing the socially inept kids, giggling about stupid little events and talking about nothing of any genuine relevance to the real world. I walked passed Simon’s morning history class and I stared straight ahead, I didn’t want to make eye contact with him. After what had happened last night, I wasn’t sure if he would still look at me the same; I wasn’t sure if I’d still look at him the same. I was scared; and at such an early time in the morning, I was not at all ready to find out.
I had finally reached my locker to put my books away, when a group of people in my year strutted passed.
“Psycho Saunders, how’s SJ treating you these days?”
“Yeah, and that Mr. Jenkins?” The group of them laughed, throwing there heads back and snorting. I was used to the insults the pompous pigs threw at me each day; but I never did let them get to me, I was better than that, I was better than them. Part of me still wanted to shove my fist down their throat at rip their digestive system out of their mouth, but only too teach them a lesson, only to show them that I could very well be the girl to ruin their life.
As I watched the group disappear down the hallway, I dropped my books. Sheets scattered everywhere and as I knelt to gather them, my whole body started to tingle and a cold sensation rushed through my veins. Everything seemed to freeze and a black haze fell over my surroundings. A flashback hit me harder than anything had hit me before. My hands were covered in blood; I was grasping a knife in my left hand and a chunk of flesh in the other. Simon was beside me; sneering with such sin it made my head spin. With one hand pressed against the icy floor, I rested for a moment, my heart beating rapidly, pounding in every inch of my body. The screaming of our victim, her brilliant thick, red blood; everything was still so vivid in my mind. With a jolt of my stomach, I was sick all over my papers. My eyes rolled into the back of my head and I swear I blacked out. After what seems like hours, I gathered up the paper splattered with vomit and put them in the bin.
Once my thoughts were calm and more collected, I made my way to my second period; I was too late for the first. I was a little early, but the classroom was empty, so I made my way in. After placing my books on the desk, Simon hurried in the door, slamming it behind him. He was humming; he was humming the song he always hummed, the song that he created about his urges…the song he hummed when he got an urge. He didn’t release I was in the room until he looked up from the desk. Our eyes met for the first time after what had happened. The emotion was intense. His eyes seemed to be stripping my soul; his severe green eyes. For a whole minute our sight didn’t leave each others; it was as if we were one soul in two bodies. Before this moment I was so worried it would’ve made things difficult and different and strange; I was worried Simon wouldn’t love me anymore. But it was clear at that moment that we both felt so much stronger. We had shared something so special that words would never be able to begin to describe it; we were passed being in love, we were inside one another. Our secret had bought us closer together.
