A/N: These poems are very rough quality. The hardest thing to write about for me is what I see all the time, so pardon the poor/lame quality of this all. More poems will be posted in this thread, so might I kindly ask you to hold off on reviewing until all is posted? Thanks.

This first poem, titled Main street is a nine-double stanza poem with no set structure to it, and the lines are to remain uncapitalized. [The idea for its style came from an old Literature project]

Image
Main Street

1

the smells of Little Italy Ristorante waft throughout the air,
encircling the pavilion that spawns a boat-filled-dock background,
where the bands play, rehearsing together, their smiles singing along with the music.

but on rainy days, when the Ristorante closes, and there's no one to walk the streets,
the backdrop of the pavilion vanishes behind a thick-grey cloud of fog,
and a lone young man plays his guitar,
the music singing in perfect harmony
with the sadness of the grey.

2

the people sit in the chairs
besides the tables set in front of stores, talking with eachother,
their smiles mirroring the joy they carry inside of them,
creating a heart-lifting setting to match the sun-shiny tone of the day.

but when the chairs are wet and unwelcoming,
no one sits in them;
the doors of shops are closed to shut out they misty-grey
and the wail of a lone guitar haunts the deserted streets.

3

there are men who spend their days on the wharf,
reeling in lines of silvery fish, laughing in each others company
in the sunny days of
summer.

but when the pier is slick with rain,
all is quiet and lonely,
save for the song of sadness the guitar sings.

4

the windows of shops shine their attractive lights,
calling out to those who pass to come
and take a look inside;
vibrant garments are strung
on clothes racks and set outside
(before the windows
where the employees
can still keep watch for thieves)
and groups of teenage girls pass by,
eying the merch through windows
seldom purchasing what they choose.

but when the streets smell fresh of rain,
every window is lost behind the veils of fog,
and no sound but the strumming of the guitar strings is heard.

5

and there is a corner, decorated in murals of graffiti,
not in the least an eyesore,
standing out from the quaint uniform looks of the surroundings,
a major attraction to the young in the field of historic buildings.
they crowd around it and marvel at the art,
adding a touch of their own to any blank spot they find.

but when the rain kisses everything,
they disappear and are replaced with the sorrowful mourn of the guitar.

6

there are the spots that the tourists come to see;
an old slave-house with the original furnishings
and a Victorian style house filled with photographs
of people who've died long ago.

but when the rain falls,
no tourists pass through,
and all falls still
but the strings of the guitar.

7

there are the beaches,
hidden behind rows of houses--
secluded from the prying eyes
of those who visit,
deserted and lonely,
resting in the peace of themselves,
with no more sounds than the cry of the birds.

but when the rain moistens the sand, and the birds seek shelter,
all is quiet,
save for the faint sounds of the lone guitar,
singing with the rain.

8

and there is the hospital
looming over the buildings of main street
like a parent over their child.
At night, they all come to life in a neat symmetrical line
of lighted stores and illuminated structures
that draw your eyes up until they reach
further and further into the picture.

and even when it rains at night,
the lone guitar still sings.

9

but when the sun rises,
peeking from behind the clouds,
and the birds begin to chirp their happy songs of joy,
the music takes one final breath and fades into the daylight...

...and if you look hard enough into the distance,
you can see the figure of a young man,
fading with the fog.

A/N: This was "supposed" to be prose poetry, but I have no idea what it turned out as. Writing "mainstreet" as one uncapitalized word was entirely intentional. And! I hope my flashy slideshow doesn't annoy anyone...

Beach Hamlet

The houses are merely more than structures, weakened at the joints by the salted spray that the sea sends through the air, turning the shingles of houses grey and rusting the screws that hold them together.

The streets are nothing but winding paths of grey, leading from the historic-slowly-falling-apart houses twisting and curving through trees and puddles of ponds to lead onto mainstreet, past all of the stores, churches, and schools, beyond the docks to the beach.

And the beach?

It is beauty. The purest, most simplistic form of beauty, never altered by the people who run across the sand and spread their towels to bathe in the sun or wade into the salty-spray of the water, laughing as the tide comes in and tickles their legs.

And the sunlight dances across the sky, playing games with the clouds, reflecting in exquisiteness on the water. When it storms, the clouds become a picturesque field of vapor, creating a perfect duet of scenic beauty with the waves that rise and fall, rise and fall.

Everyday after sunset the tide rolls in, and washes away the footprints of those who came there earlier, leaving behind the souvenirs of the sea; pulchritude seashells and seaweed signatures to let tomorrow's guests know who visited in the night.

A/N: Eh, this has to be my least favorite poem ever; it's unrhymed, unstructured, free formed and just overall ugly. It was intended to be about the city people who seem to think themselves better than everyone. I actually do not like it, and I'm only submitting it because my poem-creating machine inside has died. It feels incomplete too... I don't know why, though. Maybe I should have expanded on what they hide? (Not that I actually know, I could always create a reason) But that would drag this already-long poem out even more. And sorry for posting zillions of pictures XD

The Masked People

along the sidelines of car-filled streets they stroll,
sticking their noses into the air, in a manner that suggests
they think themselves dignified as they
stretch their necks higher, to see what lies before them,
not noticing that they cannot see beyond the shaded glasses they wear upon their face
and see the path they trod upon.

past the polished windows of expensive stores they march,
too proud to turn and marvel at the ornaments that lay beyond the glossed panes of the barrier for fear that they may seem inferior to those who pass by;

They continue walking on.

they slide into sleek expensive cars,
measuring their every move with care,
making sure not to seem unelegant
in the eyes of those who watch them.

the leather seats adorned in jewelry
welcome them as they adjust the rearview mirror,
dancing with the weight of necklaces and bangles,
purchased solely for the use of hanging from the mirror
to swing and glisten as they drive along

they drive onto tree-lined streets, the wheels of the car staying as clean as the rubber of a drawing eraser, rolling over the too-clean-to-be-true streets into brick-paved and gravel driveways with gateways and garagedoors that open as soon as they approach and shut behind them, closing the world out like you shut the air out from a jar and enter their homes to remove the masks they wear for the street.

and once inside--

their coats and jewelry fall off
and find their places
amongst tall coat trees
and jewelry stands
to be forgotten
until the next time
they are needed
to mask the faces
of the one who walks
the streets
as if they own them

They scoff and make gossip about what they have seen in their days,
knowing that it’s nothing new and merely
an excuse
for idle talk
and slander
and backbiting

They enjoy not the wealth that dances in their hands
like the midsummer-late-afternoon sun dancing in the hair
of a little girl who tries to catch it
to save and treasure
but cannot find the correct way to hold it so that it never escapes

They take the value of what they have for granted,
underminding
eachother
and seeing none other than themselves as perfect beneath the masks that they all wear
into the streets.

A/N: A very, very cheesy poem, I know. I actually started writing this when I was twelve and because it was boring, I neglected it. I still don't like it, perhaps never will, but... simply because I have no more poetry energy left in me, here it is!

Birds-Eye View

A tree with parallel branches,
becomes my ladder to the sky;

And at the top I see the town,
In the view of a birds eye.

I overlook the landscapes,
and count boats at the dock;

beyond the hospital I see the lights,
surrounding the town clock.

I see the hurried people,
Rushing along the streets;

And then I spot the ferries,
Entering the fleet.

I see the sun descending,
melting into the sea;

And I slowly make my way
Down the branches of the tree.

My final poem! Gah, I read up on the history of my town and began to hate it, so I'm having great trouble writing anything nice about it.

Image

Portrait

The city is a perfect painting,
a picturesque setting of historical architecture;
A twisted mixture of past and present with
a grey-blue brushstroke of ocean on the horizon.

But when the snowclouds roll in,
all is buried beneath the flakes,
painting over everything,
making the canvas as white as it was
before.

Comments can now be welcomed :D

Hmm... I choose birds eye view!

Okay, here we go!

...

Wow.
So, I got my quote ready and nothing! It's so good! I didn't see any mistakes!!
All right, let me try another(:

I'm not sure what it is called but it is the last one...

;

Not sure if it was needed.

About this poem:
It was neat in it's own perspective. I hope I'm not too harsh because I love all your work, but I don't see this one being anything special. It explains the town being a painting but when it snows it's nothing, just as white as the canvas it was before. That's sweet(: But it doesn't exactly express anything. Maybe go on about how beautiful the town is.
A little less inhuman.
A little more brutal.
Let the blood be your drug.

June. xD
I promised you I'd review this, and I am here ;) So, let's start on the very first poem... bearing in mind that I am terrible at reviewing poetry. xD

the smells of Little Italy Ristorante waft throughout the air,

encircling the pavilion that spawns a boat-filled-dock background,

where the bands play, rehearsing together, their smiles singing along with the music.

but on rainy days, when the Ristorante closes, and there's no one to walk the streets,

the backdrop of the pavilion vanishes behind a thick-grey cloud of fog,

and a lone young man plays his guitar,

the music singing in perfect harmony

with the sadness of the grey.

The technicalities are great. xD Zee spelling is flawless, as is the grammar, ya get what I mean. I shall stop blabbering and move onto something else... or shall I? I did warn you that my poetry critiques are rather crap, and contain a large amount of blabbering on about nothing? Me? I think not, or rather I think yes. And... *has ran out of breath*

I really like this poem. It has a great flow, even though the sentences are rather long, and it makes me want to visit your town so much. xD

I really like the imagery, and everything is beautiful. My favourite part:

and a lone young man plays his guitar,

the music singing in perfect harmony

with the sadness of the grey.

I love it ;) Beautiful imagery. xD

D'ya know what else I love?

the smells of Little Italy Ristorante waft throughout the air

The word little makes this sentence so cute ;)
