Mount Pleasant is really not the excitement city of Iowa. More like the most boring 14 years of my life. School is no exception.
As my legs carry me towards first hour through the cramped hallways, I spy him again. He is sitting at his locker, a group of people surrounding Alexander Sink, my only reason for coming to this hellish place. His eyes dart to mine, a smile sliding itself across his face. It dazzles me how beautiful his smile is.
His purple 'All Shall Perish' T-shirt is tight on his thin frame, his pants the same. The Nike's sitting themselves on his feet look very odd with his attire, but at the same time they look perfectly in sync. My answering smile is almost like a reflex.
But all to soon, the bell rings for first hour. Most people are gone from the hallways, they are bare as the desert now. Alex's first class is right across the hall from mine, so all the way down the bleak hallway, I walk side-by-side with the boy I love. I don't dare breathe, even my hair is still, not waving back like it usually does as I stride slowly down the corridor that will take me to my first hour - Personal Computers.
I am late, but that is nothing compared to the fluttering in my heart and the weakness that I feel as I walk to my computer and sit down. After a few minutes, we start. Jean, my short but strong brown-headed friend finally speaks.
"Why were you late, Sam?" She whispers. It's a crime to speak while you're supposed to be working on your Excel worksheet, but we always do it anyway.
"Yeah, Sammi, why?" Lauro, my black-haired Mexican friend questions. Both Jean and I believe that he loves me, but I don't really care. It's just a phase, as soon as the quarter ends, he will be gone. Only for the briefest period in second hour will I see him.
"None of your business, Lolo." I use my beloved nick-name for him. It aggravates him, but it's amusing none-the-less. "Why do you want to know?" I question Jean, sitting on my left side, and as she replies, Miss Lambert, the teacher, strolls casually up to us.
"Because, Sam-" My female friend starts, but she is cut off sharply by the short, thin, and glasses-wearing teacher that is usually easy-going.
"Jean! Sam! Get back to work!" She shifts her gaze from my computer screen to me. "Sam! Four assignments missing! You need to get back to work, this is the last day that I'm giving you, little Missy!" A growl escapes me, making every one's head turn to stare at the odd sound.
"I know, Miss Lambert. But you know what? I don't care." Another growl shudders my chest. She retreats, knowing she's been beaten.
The rest of the hour goes by without a sound, only the light click-clicking of hands busy at work on keyboards.
The bell startles me out of my haze. Alex.. My subconscious thoughts tell my body to move, to get up out of the chair. And before I know it, I am at my locker. The hallways are once again packed with people, making it hard to put in the combination to my home-away-from-home. I get my Physical Science things and head to the A.C.E./E.S.L. room.
Alex walks next to me, again. Coincidence? I think not. I think he loves me. But I'm often wrong, so it would be no surprise that he doesn't.
My hand suddenly feels warm. I peek down at my left hand, wondering what could have happened. Did the lighter in my pocket ignite? Oh, god, I hope not.
It surprises me that Alex's hand is closer to my hand than I'd of ever thought. My heart begins racing again. His fingers are almost intertwined with mine, so close is the heat. Nothing floats through my mind as I stare at his hand, so close to mine.
I begin to perspire, my forehead and cheeks hot. Am I blushing? I haven't blushed in.. well, forever. What is it about this boy that makes me so.. so awkward? My eyes shut, just following the warmth to the room that I do nothing in. My body sits down at my seat - the small, trapezoid shaped table that I call my own. Katelyn smiles as she sees my shocked expression.
Does she know? About my love for Alex? God, I hope not. She just continues to smile, but not at me. Phew! Barbara Brau is sitting down next to her at the rectangular table. I thank god silently in my head for letting her be clueless just a little longer.
I look up, startled at the sudden noises. Alex is standing up, taking the small presents from the miniature Christmas tree that sits on the corner of the teacher's desk. He sings out Ho ho ho! as he sits them all under the small tree. And then he turns to me, holding out the last present. I laugh instinctively. Dakota, Alex's scrawny excuse for a friend, laughs along with me. My head connects with the table, the dark black-brown hair that I call mine covering it, the smile still evident on my face.
At least this one's a bit longer.. Arg! Still, i don't think anything of significance happens.. Maybe next time! Arg! x(
