I began this story with no intention of ever making it into an actual story. I was feeling very sensual the day I wrote it, and I needed to write something to relieve some of the feelings I was feeling. I hardly edited, thought little about the concept of the story. - So basically I just wrote what ever came to mind. I would love to read what you guys think so far, and if I should continue with the story. Enjoy =]

*****************************
There’s nothing that I have done, in all my 16 years, that somebody would point out and say, “Hey, she never washes her plate, don’t let her have that ipod,” or something along those lines. I’m not perfect, but I hardly do anything that gets me into trouble, or on the bad side of my parents. So why wouldn’t they allow me to have a boyfriend?

Why would they deprive me of the one teenage experience that everyone else my age seems to have? What do I do all the time? Study, study, study, homework, homework, and sleep if I have time. That’s all I do. Wouldn’t it be nice if I had someone who would call me at night, someone who would say that I was pretty, or that he loved the way I talked or laughed. Just somebody, besides my parents, that would make me feel special. That’s all I need.

I strolled down the concrete sidewalk, the winter chill made my already cold hands even colder. I felt my stomach lurch a few times in its’ nervousness, but other then that I think I was ready, I think I could at least speak a few words, and get it over with so I could throw up afterwards.

He was standing in the corner, reading his math book, and I thought I was the only one that did that. I smiled, somehow forgetting my nervousness as I approached him.

“Hey, how’s physics class?” My voice sounded odd, deeper from the cold.

His eyes flickered up from his text book toward me, surprised then humorous.

“Well, we haven’t done much since you left. Mr. Palmer isn’t really into...physics, as you know.”

I sighed, shifting my gaze from his sparkling, deep blue eyes, toward the tree in the corner. Yes, a tree. My heart suddenly began to thump, as if pounding beneath my chest yelling, “Say it already, say it!”

“Oh, I know alright.” I looked back at him, his eyes now questioning, “Ok, I know we haven’t talked much, and I know this might sound odd and everything, but I haven’t stopped thinking about you…since we last talked.” I immediately looked back at that tree again, alone and cold, just like what I’ll be in the next minute or so. I prepared myself for rejection.

“Oh…”I felt his breath on my forehead, saw him shift his footing, and then put down his math text book. “ Well, I’ve thought about you quite a few times too, but I didn’t really think….you would be..,” I suddenly looked up at him, hopeful, and now he looked away, his pale complexion flushed pink, my heart sped up once again, fueled with hope, “…not interested. With you being a year older than me and all.”

Not interested? Is he serious? How could I not be interested with eyes like those? He finally gazed back at me, nervously, his eyes a deeper blue than before, almost smothering. “Not at all, not at all. Your taller than me, you could pass for someone older than me.” I grinned, trying to ease the nervous tension between us. “So, it’s alright if we…you know..?”

His eyes lit up, “Go out? On a date?”

“Yea... I mean only if you want to...” My eyes began to make its way to the lone tree…

“No.” He placed his hand gently on my arm. “I would love to.”

I smiled and so did he, his eyes gleaming in the sunlight.

“That’s odd,” I turned my gaze to the sky and the dark, heavy clouds slowly making it’s way away from the sun, “I was sure I saw in the news that there will be all cloud cover today.” He looked up, as well. I couldn’t help noticing his blonde eyelashes flicker as he blinked from the sudden sunlight, like butterflies.

He grinned again, holding my gaze for a moment. “Maybe our sudden bond caused a reaction?” A chemistry joke. I couldn’t find anyone else on this earth who would understand me and my science jokes.

Laughing, I couldn’t help moving closer to him, hugging his warm body – and his cold textbook, close to me. “I’m glad you said yes, I’m so glad, you can’t imagine.”

“And I’m glad you had the confidence to tell me, because I would’ve settled for just admiring you from afar.”

So that was our faithful meeting. We’ve only talked once before, so I had very little confidence that he would actually say yes. All I knew at that moment, was that if I didn’t make ends meet about my feelings, I would be constantly obsessing over what would have been, and what could have been. Now, he made life much more pleasant for me.

His name was Issac. He was Russian, just moved here last year and has a natural American accent, something I can hardly believe for someone who grew up speaking Russian. He has short blonde hair, usually messy since he, like me, can’t seem to stop picking his face or pulling his hair during study. He was lanky and tall, kept his clothes simple, no brand names or anything…like me. He had a pale complexion, and sparkling, deep blue eyes, my own personal pool.

He is very down to earth, and a nerd, again, like me. We like to call ourselves the nerd couple that does more than study. It’s true, when we study, we like to make it interesting. More on that later. He’s a year younger than me, making him a sophomore and me a junior. We like a lot of the same things, science especially. He’s extremely good at math, something that I wish I was only natural at so he helps me with a lot of math homework and studying for quizzes.

I first saw him in my physics class. I didn’t take much notice of him at first, since I didn’t know him, or anyone else in that class and planned not to befriend anyone since I’d rather not have any more responsibility to keep that friendship intact. I’m not antisocial, I’m just antitoomuchresponsibility. We were paired up for a lab once, so that’s when I noticed him. He was smart, friendly, and had a spark in his eyes that desired much more in life, much more than what we learned from school, something he and I shared. We connected like two molecules in a bond. He loved science, I loved science. He hated designer dubs, I hated designer dubs. He thought Mr. Palmer was ridiculous, so did I. It was odd to find someone that connected to me on so many levels. Especially since the amount of time I’ve poured into my books and drained away from life with my friends left me with having only two friends I can talk to about things other than school. Issac just understood me. He understands that I have to work so hard to get through school; he understands that my life at home isn’t so good and education is my only option. He holds the same drive as I, only that learning comes easier for him.

Today, I sit in my car, with him driving as he held my hand between us. We listened to soft Christmas music, both of us chipper with the holiday spirit. He woke me up early, with my phone ringing at 8 am, saying he had a surprise for me.

“Levane, come on, wake up, love. I want to show you something.” His soft voice almost mused me to fall back asleep, like I’ve done many nights, talking with him on the phone, just listening to him until I fell asleep.

He drove along the beach, few people were out because of the cold weather, unnaturally cold for Florida. The sun was in the middle of the sky, few clouds were scattered far from each other, and sea gulls squawked impatiently at tourists strolling the side walk carrying bags of food.

I moved down my seat, until my legs could fold beneath me. His hand was warm in mine, but I could feel a bit of nervous sweat.

“Where exactly are you taking me?”

His eyes flickered from the road to me, then back.

“You’ll see.” His voice was shaky.

“Why are you so nervous? What’s wrong?” I shifted in my seat again, pulling his hand closer to me as I brushed my lips against it. His hand immediately grew warmer.

“Where ever you take me, I’m sure I’ll like it.” I reassured him with warm smile as he looked at me again, his eyes still nervous.

“Hey,” I pulled his hand lightly, “you know that I love you right?”

His cheeks flushed pink. I loved it when he blushed. It made him look so cute.

“Right?” I asked him again.

We suddenly stopped at a red light and he kissed me lightly on the lips, gazing at my eyes the entire time,

“Right, then you must know that every little thing I do for you, I want to make perfect. Your love is everything to me and I, in return, want to make every little thing special for you. So that you know how much you mean to me.”

My heart skipped a few beats. It seemed like he knew all the right words to make my blood melt. It’s hard to believe he’s not a writer and just reads science text books all day, like me. The car jolt forward before I could respond, where I had intended on giving him a more deeper kiss, so instead, I murmured quietly,

“You don’t need to prove it to me, Issac. Just having you here, next to me, is all I want and need from you.”

It’s funny how passionate we can get, just a couple of nerds experiencing first love. I guess it could be considered a good thing. Especially when you had what we had; A connection that reached far from just boyfriend and girlfriend.

He suddenly stopped, turning to park next to a small, obscure looking tree, and jumped out walking around the car to open the door for me. Something I told him wasn’t necessary. I even tried to trick him into thinking I thought it was an insult to my feminism side- that men believed women were incapable of even opening doors for themselves. He didn’t buy it, he was too much of a gentleman, and such manners came natural to him.

I unbuckled my belt and stretched my legs down the truck, reaching for the floor as he held my hands. As I reached firm footing, his hands moved down to my hips, pushing me lightly against the car seat. He gazed down at me, his eyes deep, like the depths of the ocean, and his cheeks with a hint of pink.

He bent down, kissed both my cheeks before gazing at me again, blinking his long, blonde lashes a couple of times, like butterfly wings.

“Well, you have me, is it so wrong that I want to give you more than just, simple me?”

Having him so close to me, his breath hot on my face and his eyes smothering…what else could I want but him?

“No, I like just, simple, you.” I tangled my arms around his neck and pulled him toward me, our body bent together until we both were weighed down along the car seat. I kiss him sweetly at first, his cold, full lips smooth against my also cold lips. Our breaths quickly warmed our kiss, and his tongue ran along mine, sensing the coldness I was feeling from the winter air. It felt like hours when we finally parted our mouths. Our breaths heavy and his cheeks flushed a deeper red.

“But, the extras are nice.”

He grinned, “Come on, now close your eyes – I’ll carry you.”

He lifted me up around his arms, holding me close to his chest as I linked my arms around his neck.

“Have your eyes closed?”

“Yes, Yes.” I replied, burrowing my head in his scarf from the icy wind as he walked briskly toward wherever he was taking me.

A few minutes passed until he finally told me to open my eyes. I didn’t hear anything but his light footsteps as he carried me, so I certainly was not expecting this.

He had taken me along the side of a large river, surrounded by pine trees, and nothing but pine trees, with a single boat on the side of the lake, tied to a tree stomp by a small pier. The sun lied in the middle of the sky, sending rays down on the lake, that made it glisten with bits of stars glimmering everywhere, and the smell of pine trees was immediately soothing. It looked so romantic, so unbelievable. I caught my breath at this splendor.

He knew that I loved nature, loved being away from the havoc of civilization. He was also the only person in the world that understood how I felt.

“So, do you like it? Is it alright? I mean, I know that boat is small, and we are the only ones here, but I know you…” I placed my finger to his lips, and signaled for him to release me from his arms.

I then walked slowly toward the lake, again admiring nature’s beauty, the most perfect place I’ve seen, and the most peaceful. Nothing could compare to the serenity that just oozes from every corner here, from the trees, to the small boat, to the sparkling water..nothing. I turned back to him as I spread out my arms.

“This, this is exactly me.”

He smiled with relief and quickly made his way over to the small pier and began to untie the boat.

“I’m glad you like it, I wanted to keep your eyes closed until I got you into this boat and in the lake, but I had a feeling you might realize what I was doing, and I wanted it to be a surprised, so I thought I’ll just show you the place first, then get you out there.”

I laughed. I scuba dive almost every weekend, I would recognize, even with my eyes closed, the movement and sounds made in preparation for travel on water. Issac was right, he wouldn’t be able to surprise me there.
I strolled over eagerly onto the boat, “You know me way too much, I need to stop talking to you in the middle of the night so I’d have at least some things to myself,” I teased as I examined the small capacity. There was only one seat, in the back, that could fit two passengers, maybe three if they were to squeeze in together. It was made of tan leather, torn in the sides a bit but, still usable. The steering was ordinary, with a built in compass next to the meter, and key hole where a key was already in place. I sat in the seat after looking over the rest of the boat, there was only one floor, with room in the front for lying out in the sun but, that’s about it. He had placed a cooler and some bags in the corner, I was about to open them when he noticed, “Don’t open those bags yet, Levane, this was suppose to be a surprise, from me to you remember?”

“Alright, just trying to help out, you have your hands all tied up with the rope,” I pointed out. Really, I wanted to see what else he had in store for me. I was curious. Even with how much we had in common, he always found ways to surprise me.

The boat shifted in the water as he hopped in, “No, I got it, just a knot I need to untangle.” He strolled over to the steering, switched on the engine, and we began to move forward. The engine rumbled loudly in the silence of the area. I quickly made my way back to the end seat. Smoothing down my white dress and hair as the wind from the boat movement generated. The chill sent Goosebumps up my legs. Damn. I forgot to shave. Little stems of brown hair stuck up like roots from the raised skin, and I rubbed my hands up and down my legs until I could friction enough heat to smooth the stubborn hairs down. All the while, he managed to reach the middle of the lake, stop the boat, move around the front and gather sweet wine, and vegetable chips into cups.

While I was still gazing intently down my legs, he squeezed into my seat, kissed my bent temple lightly, until I finally looked up. He held two glasses of red wine in his hands, the sunlight making both the glasses and the water surrounding us glitter like a thousand gems. My breath became short again as our eyes held one another, now they were a light blue, my favorite shade.

“Now, my love, this place, this moment, this wine, all this, is my surprise to you.”
He gestured for me to take the glass, and as I took it he replaced his hand with mine.

“I know you’ve been working hard all week, and I wanted to take you somewhere that you could have at least a few moments of peace.”

Our eyes still together, I murmured, “This is perfect, just the thing I’ve been wishing for a while.”

“To us, then?” He raised his glass of wine, grinning sheepishly.

“To us and our love,” I added.

We clinked our glasses and I took a long sip of the wine. It was sweet, like grape juice with a little hint of alcohol but, not enough to become drunk over a few glasses.
As I finished, I caught him staring intently over at me again, his brows creased a little, as if he was anticipating something.

I placed my glass on the back board of the boat next to the seat and patted his hands.

“Issac, this is lovely, don’t be so stressed. I love it.”

He took another sip, “No, it’s not that, I’ve just been thinking…anyway. I’m glad you like this. Do you like the boat? I know it’s small, but it’s my uncles and has quite a nice history in it.”

“Really?” I examined his smile, as he looked around the lake.

“What’s the history?”

Issac ran a hand down his loose blonde hair as he took another sip of wine, “My uncle supposedly had his first, well, serious date with his wife here, and later purposes to her on this same boat.”

I thought about his uncle. He had dark grey hair, dull green eyes that were probably once very bright, and sharp handsome features that were noticeable even at his age. He was Russian, and only spoke Russian, although I assumed he did know English but, wished not to speak it due to his severe loyalty to his native born country. Other than that, he was nice, polite from what he spoke to me in Russian phrases that I knew. Issac told me that his wife died three years ago, and that he was still recovering from her. She was an American. Another reason why he refuses to speak English, he felt it was only meant for her, and now that she’s gone he wants to keep it for her, only, forever.

I have found a boy with a history of romantic men. I couldn’t be any luckier.

“He’s a nice guy, I wish I knew what he was saying though. I feel like you two are always making jokes behind my back.” I give him a suspicious glare. Issac chuckled,

“Don’t worry, when I talk about you, I only tell him about how amazing I think you are, and he goes on to say that he doesn’t want to hear it or he’ll end up falling in love with you from my descriptions.” He grinned, his eyes creased in the corners.

“Really? And all this time I thought he was only nice to me because I was your girlfriend. Turns out he’s been refraining from love, huh?”

I reached out for my glass of wine and took another mouth full. I tasted more alcohol this time, definitely enough to make me a little bizarre. I smiled languidly toward Issac, his eyes already dark in relaxation.

“Definitely.” He placed his drink to the side and moved closer to me. The leather seat made smacking noises as we both moved closer and I placed my glass off to the side as well.

He linked his arms around my waist, our knees touching, and now both our entire upper body lined next to each other. My head lied beside his neck; our position would seem uncomfortable if it wasn’t for the shape of the seat that supported both of us.

We rested there like this for several minutes. The singing of wild birds and the occasional splash from jumping fish interrupted the silence every few moments. I could feel the warmth from the sunlight above underneath my sweater.

“Hey, Issac, mind if you took my sweater off? I don’t want to move, I’m too comfortable.” I felt him smile and the rumble beneath his jaw as he laughed, “Sure.” I unzipped my sweater as he pulled it off. My bare shoulders now warm in the sunlight. He kissed them both before moving on to my neck.

With his lips still on my collarbone, he murmured, “It always seems that I can’t ever refrain myself from not touching you…kissing you..,” his planted small kisses around my neck now, sending warmth down my throat each time, “and…just being near you…you are like my proton,”

“and you, my electron,” I quickly added before he closed my lips with his.

It began with an innocent kiss, soft and warm as he tugged on my upper lip gently. He ran his hand down my hair, and kept his other arm firm around my waste. I left mine entwined around his neck, pushing him closer to me until I could feel his heart beat next to mine. It was a slow rhythm, relaxed compared to my steady, quick beats. His kiss was tender, a kiss that didn’t ask for too much, just the sweet feeling that we both sought.

After a few minutes he let go of me, blinking his eyes as he opened them to the rays of sunlight that interceded us. I smiled. I lay my head against the crook of his neck, kissing his collar bone a couple of times as he sighed.

“I don’t know how I could ever live without you.”

I stopped caressing him and looked up from under his jaw. His eyes were set to the side, his brows angled down, as he lifted one hand to smooth across his face.

Trying to lighten things, “You’re starting to sound like the characters I read in those cheesy romance novels, Issac. We’re teenagers; we don’t live in a world ruled be dragons, or robots, or whatever there is in the fantasy world. Don’t worry too much, ok?”

“No, I know. But, I…”

I felt him stiffen. At that moment, all I could feel was the serenity that surrounded us like a warm blanket. It was so peaceful, a place I wish I could just stop time and stay here for ever…with him. Issac’s stress was making me nervous, slicing through the harmony of the woods like a blade.

I took my head away from his shoulder that were now too stiff to be comfortable. I moved out of his grasp, unfastening his arms around my hips as I sat on the seat and out of his lap.

I swiped my hand across my lips, removing the trace of salvia from the previous kiss.

He looked at me, his eyes a dark, navy blue. His face was still contorted in frustration. I don’t understand. I told him I loved his surprise, he knows that even if I didn’t like it I wouldn’t want him to be stressed over it. But, that’s not the point, I do love it here, and I love his little surprises. He was such a good boyfriend, he just never realizes it.

“Issac,” A cold breeze blew past me and I crossed my arms, “Please, please, stop worrying. What is there to be stressed about?” I looked at him questioningly, but he shifted his gaze toward the trees behind me.

“Listen to me,” He looked back, meeting my eyes for a moment before gazing back down at the small area between us, “tell me, what’s on your mind?”

“I don’t, I can’t…not now, not here. I wanted to make this day special..”

“-It already is,” I interrupted.

“I’m glad, I just…I need to tell you something.”

He finally met my eyes, holding them steady and I noticed them changing colors, transforming into an even deeper blue that seemed almost black. I’ve only seen his eyes like this a couple of times, and that was when he was in pain. But, I don’t see why he would be feeling like this, not right now.

Still holding my gaze he murmured, “I’m leaving.”

I felt myself drop about 1000 feet, down under the boat, deep into the water until I was lying down against the cold, moist soil. I was suddenly overwhelmed with this sinking feeling and my breath immediately quickened. I scanned his eyes, searching for that glint of humor, sarcasm, anything that would prove to me that he was just kidding, that this was just part of his surprise.

“Wha-what do you mean? You’re leaving? To where? When?” I felt my heart in my throat, almost clogging my uneasy breaths.

“My…dad needs to go back to Russia. He got offered a position at the space association there that NASA wouldn’t give him. It’s been his dream…for years.”

I looked away from him. I remembered his father, he was an aerospace engineer. Images of his office, filled with diagrams of possible shuttle ideas, and hundreds of math equations, calculating the launch, the time in space, the movement through the atmosphere, things that Issac’s dad would pour over enthusiastically whenever I asked him what he was working on. He had that same glint in his eyes that his son had. I never understood why NASA wouldn’t make him chief engineer. Issac told me his father had a dispute once with an ex colleague who was manager of the engineers at NASA. They went to the same college and Issac’s dad, at the time, received an elite position from a professor that he wanted. From there, I guess they both held a grudge about it.

“But, why now? Could you stay here? I think my parents might-”

“-Levane, you know your parents would never agree,” He gave an empty laugh. “Where would I sleep? In your bedroom?”

“Well, of course not! You can sleep in my brother’s old room. We’ll work something out,” I stammered, my mind zooming through ideas, trying to find one that could keep us together.

“My parent’s need me,” He took my hand that was balled into fists, smoothing out my fingers as he kissed each tip lightly, “I love you, but I can’t leave them.”

I took my hand away. I refused to look at him as I glared down at the pine trees. I saw a little one, overwhelmed by the other, much taller trees. It was bent down, with limp branches that hung down like it was made of wet clay. Cold and alone. Exactly how I felt when I first thought he would reject me and now I’m feeling it after we fell love. It hurt, hurt more than what would have been if he never agreed to go out on that date with me in the first place.

I could feel warm tears outline the rim of my eyes. He noticed.

“Oh, love, please, this is just as hard for me as it is for you. Do you think I want to leave you? Do you know how much I yelled at my parents? I hurt my father. This is his dream, I can’t take that away from him. You should understand, all three of us hold the same joy for what we do.”

Now I was crying openly, the lone tree blurry in my vision until I couldn’t see it at all. My lashes grew heavy as I tried to blink back more tears. I still had that feeling I was deep underneath the water, lying on the sand, feeling the pressure of the depth hitting me from every side.

“No, I understand. It’s alright. Just give me a moment.”

I got up, he tried to help me but, I pushed his arms away, “No, I’m fine. Leave me alone for a few minutes. I need to collect myself.”

“Ok,” he whispered, barely audible but, I could trace the hint of worry and pain. I didn’t care right now. I was feeling so emotionally heavy, that if I didn’t gain control, I would end up off the boat and deep under the water. Just to get away from everything I was feeling.

Hey there!

I'm not going to give you a full grammatical critique because I'm not quite awake and this looks very polished. You're obviously used to writing short stories.

I have some advice for you though - Show, Don't Tell. This is getting to be such a cliche on here and I know I overuse it way too much but, to be honest, it's the most valuable rule for writers.

I know those words can be frustrating. You might not know exactly what “show, don’t tell” means. Or you might believe that you are showing when you’re really telling.

While “telling” can be useful, even necessary, most people don’t realize how vital “showing” is to an effective story, essay, or even a blog post. Showing allows the reader to follow the author into the moment, to see and feel and experience what the author has experienced. Using the proper balance of showing and telling will make your writing more interesting and effective.

Tips to help you show and not tell:

 Use Dialogue. Dialogue can give your reader a great deal about character, emotion and mood.

 Use Sensory Language. In order for readers to fully experience what you’re writing about, they need to be able to see, hear, taste, smell and touch the world around them. Try to use language that incorporates several senses, not just sight.

 Be Descriptive. I’m sure everyone remembers learning to use adjectives and adverbs in elementary school. When we’re told to be more descriptive, it’s easy to go back to those things that we were taught. But being descriptive is more than just inserting a string of descriptive words. It’s carefully choosing the right words and using them sparingly to convey your meaning.

Good luck! You are a very good writer, and if you follow the points above, your writing will be easily excellent.

Wow...that gave me goosebumps! Some wonderful romance here-I'd love to see more. A happy ending would be really nice.

I love the way the two "nerds" are portrayed here. I don't approve of the usual nerdy stereotype-I actually think that they are amongst the most romantic people on Earth. Who else would use such a fantastic metaphor as a proton and an electron? And they (note that I'm talking about sciencey nerds-I'm not too familiar with many other nerdy states of mind, but I shall assume that this applies to them as well) have something that many people lack-passion.
So I really liked your choice of characters. I think some people might find Issac speaking with an American accent unrealistic, but I actually know a Turkish person who sounds really American when he speaks English, so I can accept that. They might also roll their eyes at Issac's father being a NASA engineer, but someone's got to do those jobs, so there's no reason why a character in this story can't be one.

Again, I'd love to see more, hopefully with things working out in some way in the end-even if they don't get back together, it would be nice to see them getting on with their lives in some way or another.

I'd also like to see a few other characters. You mentioned Levane has two friends, and you've implied that family life for her isn't great. Perhaps you could expand on this a little?

Whatever you do, you should be proud of this story. The language wasn't extraordinary, but you told the story nigh-on-perfectly. You nearly made me cry at the end!
I refuse to acknowledge the existence of this signature.

Castles in the Sky: Thanks so much for your review and advice, I will definitely be taking note of it.

Face engine: Thank you :) I haven't written too many stories, but the ones I have started, the beginning is a bit long because I tend to over describe things. The other characters will come into the story in time. Right now I'm focusing on both Issac and Levane, or at least trying to get there story out before I introduce anyone new. But, I'll definitely take your advice, as well.

Thanks again to both of you!

Continued.....

************************************************************************************

I stumbled toward the front of the boat and sat on the edge, twining my arms around the cold handle bars as I let my legs swing down the side of the boat. I glanced down at the water. The rays of sunlight still sent tiny, glittering stars scatter amidst the ripples but, instead of leaving me in awe, it mocked me. The trees in the distance, lush and green, filled with the scent of pine needles, were once relaxing, but now irritating.

We’ve been together for one and a half years. I’ve spent the most amazing short period of my life with a soul that I truly connected to. What would happen to me when he leaves? I don’t think I could stand it, I don’t think I’m strong enough.

I frowned down at my reflection in the water. A few dark shapes swam around and poked their mouths on the surface, then sunk back again.

Not strong enough. Huh. Since when have I considered myself not strong enough to do anything? I, the confident science girl. I, the teacher’s pet. I, the student who speaks her mind, caring less of what others think. But, I, Levane of December 01, 2008, cannot even imagine life without another person there with me. How did I go from never wanting a boyfriend in high school to this entirely dependent girl?

I heard soft sniffles behind me. Issac hardly cried. There were a few moments when he did cry in front of me, and one occasion was his Grandfather’s death, and on another our fight back in August, when I told him I was breaking up with him. My frown deepened as I thought of that day. We both were on swings, side by side, at the park near his house.

It was a quiet morning. Only the soft chirp of blue jays and cardinals bouncing from tree to tree interrupted the morning silence. Trees with dark green leaves encircled the playground, sending large shadows looming over us, at least until the sun had fully risen.

I pushed the ground with my foot lightly, making myself rock on the swing. The warm air whizzed past me. Not even the morning, my favorite time of the day, could decapitate what I was feeling toward Issac right now. Or rather, what I was not feeling.

I peered over at him with the corner of my eyes. He had his head down, his blonde hair falling above his eyes, and his feet shoving the ground, making him spin in small circles.

“Can we just sleep on this tonight? Maybe you’ll change your mind.” He looked up, his eyes dark and heavy. If I let this off for tomorrow, neither of us would be sleeping on it, we both would be up all night – again.

I turned away, “I’d rather not, Issac. I don’t feel the same with you anymore.”

“You’re just going through a period of uncertainty, that’s all.”

“- No, I’m not. I’ve decided. We can’t be together if we don’t share the same feelings anymore.”

I heard the creak of his swings stop.

“So, your saying that…”

Here it goes, I felt my stomach clench. No, I can’t be feeling this. I’ve already decided that my feelings toward him have been completely vanquished.

“…you don’t love me anymore?” His voice dropped toward the end.

I clenched my fists, my nails dug into my skin as I felt my stomach roll. My heart, I couldn’t feel it, I couldn’t feel the beats that use to quicken every time I saw him. It was over, it had to be.

But, I couldn’t bring myself to say yes. If I tried to form the words in my mouth, my throat would go dry, making it incapable for me to utter a single word. I coughed.

I heard it. It started with soft breaths, in and out, and then I heard the sound of tears drop onto the soil below him. He cried silently, only his short intake of breaths giving him away.

“No, it’s not that…” I trailed. What was I saying? I quickly listened for any signal of my heart quickening. Nothing.

Issac wiped his tears with his right hand quickly before looking back at me. His eyes, a trait I’ve always noticed about him, even learned to tell whatever mood he was in just by the shade of blue his eyes were, were now a dark blue, almost black. His expression was severe, his face contorted in obvious agony. It hurt for me to see him like this. He didn’t deserve me - he didn’t deserve what I was making him go through right now.

“I know I haven’t called you in a few days, I’m sorry it’s just my dad needed to use the phone at night for his job. And I know I sometimes arrive late to help you with things, but I promise Levane, I’ll do anything, I’ll fix anything you didn’t like about me. Just please, don’t do this not right now.”

It felt like my heart was chipping into pieces.

“No, no Issac, I told you – it’s not you. I just don’t want to continue this relationship if only one person feels love for the other. It would only hurt both of us and I don’t want to make you go through that.”

“But, are you sure you have stopped loving me, Levane? Are you absolutely certain?” He pushed himself out of the swing and kneeled down in front of me. He placed his hands on my knees as I turned to look elsewhere- anywhere but his face.

“Levane? Please, look at me.” For a short minute, I stared at the children playing on the slides. A little girl with red cheeks and blonde hair was screaming in joy as her mother pushed her down the slide. I grimaced at her delight and forced myself to look at Issac.

“Now, can you honestly say to me, while looking into my eyes, that you don’t love me anymore?”

It was only fair. He wanted to know if I was really telling him the truth, or if I was only trying to break up with him because of other problems I was having. He was being the good boyfriend that he always was.

The darkness of his eyes made me stiffen. He stared unblinkingly into my eyes and I saw every shade of dark blue imaginable held between those rims of full blonde lashes. I felt something punch my chest lightly. Surprised, my hand flew to my chest. I felt the slow, steady rhythm of my heart. It was there.

Meanwhile, he gazed bewilderly at my hand then quickly back to me, searching for an answer. My heart quickened in pace as his eyes caught mine. I still loved him. It was there all along and he knew it.

“I’m sorry, Issac, you were right, I do still love you.”

The memory of that day was still clear to me, even though we’ve spent countless hours together since then to add to the memories of him and I.

But this time, today, he was leaving me, and we both didn’t want it to happen.

I knew I had to be stronger than the way I was acting right now. I had to let him know that no matter what, even if it meant a 1000 miles between us, could never break us. It just couldn’t.

I pulled on the metal handle bars until I was on my feet and slowly made my way back to Issac. He had his head bent down on his hands. The wine we previously drank was empty. He must’ve poured them out when I was on the other side of the boat.

“Issac,” I shook his shoulder lightly, “I’m sorry. I overreacted.”

His hand snaked around from his face to my hand. They were so cold I almost jumped. I kept my eyes averted from his as I sat next to him but, I didn’t need to – he was trying not to look at me either.

“No, that was the only reaction you could’ve given after I just let it out like that. I was stupid. I shouldn’t have chosen today to tell you. I just...”I heard him catch his breath, “I just couldn’t live hiding you from what will happen to us, so soon.”

I sighed, rubbing my thumb against the top of his hand to make them warm.

“I would eventually find out, even if you didn’t plan on telling me.”

My mom and Issac’s mother were practically best friends. They became acquainted after Issac and I got together and have been inseparable since. The cons of having a boyfriend who also had a mother that was my mom’s best friend meant that they knew everything about us, and whatever was happening in our lives, they would be the first to know. My mom would have asked me later today if I knew, she would be expecting me to come home bawling in full force.

“It’s fine though. I mean, no it’s not, but, we’ll figure something out. Long distance relationships can’t be that bad, right?” I managed to muster out a small smile.

He gave one back.

“We can still have our long phone calls.”

“and our instant messaging,” I added.

“We can still see each other through web cams,” Issac offered.

Web cams. It wouldn’t be the same. Seeing a picture of him is different from having him near me and feeling his warmth.

I scooted closer to him, wrapping my arms around his waist.

“Whatever happens, I’m sure we will be able to manage.”

I kissed him. It was a cold kiss. Our lips moved somewhat numbly against each other. It reminded me of the day on the swings. How I felt when I thought the spark we once had was gone. Our kisses were always like this, empty and cold. But, now, I didn’t want it to be like this. I wanted him, more than anything in the world right now.

We remained on the boat together for another hour. We sat in silence, listening to the sound of birds and ripples of water surrounding us. He dropped me off at home with another cold kiss. We hardly looked at each other the rest of the day in fear of suddenly breaking down.

I shoved my key into the key hole, twisting it angrily. I’ve always had a problem opening doors, even with the right keys. A memory of Issac teasing me one night when I couldn’t get my door open fogged my mind; he said I was just stalling, waiting for him to kiss me. It was only our 3rd date, so I was nervous about the whole idea of kissing him but, he seemed totally cool about it.

I finally managed to open the door and I slugged in, throwing my purse against the wall.

“Oh, there she is, poor baby.” I heard the sound of my mother’s raspy voice as she made her way toward me.

Her round brown eyes were furrowed in concern as she spread out her arms, inviting me in for a hug. I threw myself on her and began sobbing. I let out everything. All the pain I was trying to hide from Issac, to how much I hated how cold our last kiss has been, to the fact that I knew long distance relationships just doesn’t work. It was over. I knew it. Our kiss had proved it.

My mother kissed my hair, her hand smoothing my back.

“Levane, I’m so sorry. It’ll be hard to see them go. I will miss Elane so much too.” She sniffed a couple of times into my hair. I wasn’t the only one who was going to lose someone – my mom was losing her best friend too.

“You don’t think Issac and Elane could stay with us for a little, could they? I mean,” I looked around the room, “we have room for two more people, don’t we?”

“Honey, I don’t think that’s possible. They both need to be there to support him. He needs there love as much as we do, even more in his case.” She let go of me, rubbing her hand up and down my arm.

“We are just going to have to learn to move on. That’s all I can say.” My mom took her left hand and wiped her eyes that were now leaving a trail of tears on her cheeks. She looked more pale then usual today, her hair was muffled, and she wasn’t wearing any make up. I probably looked just as bad right now.

“I don’t know if I can, I don’t think I’m strong enough. He’s been such a huge part of my life – such a huge part of me.”

“I know, hon, come on. Lets get ourselves some hot tea to ease some of the pain we’re feeling.”

“Like that’ll help.” I muttered.

“It’s a start,” she replied softly.

After she had the tea brewing my mother sat down on the kitchen table, fingering the plastic daisy she had set just previously after Thanksgiving. It was one of the gifts Elane gave to her. We brought them over for thanksgiving and had the best evening either of us could remember. We were like a big happy family. We played Christmas music, danced until we felt all the food we stuffed into ourselves burn away…I couldn’t help smiling at the joy we all had during that night. I heard my mom give out a soft laugh, her eyes giving away her thoughts of that night too.

“Pheeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww,” the teapot blew and she pushed herself away from the table, and quickly set two glass tea cups in front of me.

“Do you want some oatmeal cookies with the tea?” She inquired as she reached into the cabinet.

“No thanks. Just tea is fine.”

She placed the tea pot in the middle of the table and a plate of cookies beside her. I poured the tea for both of us. We both stared at the steam rising from the cups, almost mesmerized by it. I took a short sip and felt the warm, sweet tea run down my throat. It did help soothe some of the pain I was feeling. At least it got the feel from the last kiss with Issac to disappear.

“It seemed like we just met them.”

I took another small sip, “I know, it always feels like that with Issac.”

My mother crunched on an oatmeal cookie, staring adamantly through the small kitchen window behind me. “I can’t imagine what you’re going through right now. I’m about to break down into pieces because my best friend is leaving but, you – not only is your best friend leaving but, your-”

“- love, I know. At least we can go through it together. Losing a best friend can be just as hard as losing your love. In both situations we are connected by a different type of love.”

“Yes.” she closed her eyes as she took a long sip of her tea.

I poured myself some more and finished it quickly.

“Mom, I think I’m going to go to my room, if you don’t mind.”

“Of course not, honey.”

I placed my tea in the kitchen sink and made my way toward the stairs.

“Levane.”

I stopped, my hand gripped on the stair hand bar.

“Yes.”

My mother appeared in the living room, holding her cup of tea in her hands.

“If you need anything, just call me, alright?”

I forced a smile. “Thanks mom.”
