Okay, this is a really long, really random poem that I just kept writing and writing until it ended up like this but I hope you enjoy it:

The street lights glimmer
across the dark night,
As the puddles shimmer
In displays of sparkling bright.
The stars are a blanket,
putting the world to bed,
The Earth turns the lights off
And we are lit by the moon instead.
The midnight blue of the dark sky beckons,
Calling out to stargazers and strangers alike,
The Earth twists and turns,
On an around the sun hike.
Mars calls to Earth
In a fiery display of gloom,
What we once mistook for little green men,
Now the bringers of doom.

The sceptics haunt the doorways,
Not believing their eyes,
Bang, smash, KABOOM!
And for cover they suddenly dive.
"If only we had listened!”
A small young scientist says,
Watching spilt blood glisten,
And warning lights turn to red.
They run around like headless chickens,
Trying to find some space
To hide as the hunt quickens
And the hunted pick up their pace.

The door to the spaceship springs free
A Spectacle for all,
Poor Jimmy's arm is in a tree,
He must've lost it in the fall.
A small young creature
Tentatively steps out,
Looking a little startled
As its audience start to shout.
"We come in peace,
Young Earthlings,
We really mean no harm,
We came for some souvenirs,
Maybe a human arm?"
A young woman screams,
The crowd go wild,
Hasty with their desire to flee,
The din doesn't bother one small child,
Who instead chooses to look at me.
A dog starts to bark
And wits are regained,
While the aliens disembark,
Starting their hunt for a human brain.

"Look at the sky!"
A young boy calls,
Nearly poking a girl in the eye.
Everyone looks up, suddenly enthralled.
The pretty pattern of orange blazes across the dark,
And it swirls and spirals,
Whilst the footy fans are in the park,
Having a last game with their rivals.
"No need to worry!" a local madman cries,
"The one on the left is my aunt's best mate,
He's only here for the pies!
Not to worry,
They're not going to kill us all,
They prefer a chat
Or a game of football!"
The beam from a ray gun
Shoots out from the ship,
The man falls to the floor
And a woman starts to flip.
"Why'd you have to kill him?
He did nothing wrong!
He thought you were the puppet man
Who often bursts into song."

The alien shrugs and turns
As a cry is heard from the loading bay.
"Look at this, Ern!"
A young alien begins to say,
Pointing to an article,
Ignoring the planet's disarray.
"It's seems we've arrived in Britain,
And I don't think that is good,
The youngsters are into spitting,
And they like the sight of blood.
If that isn't enough, just look at this!
The weather's just a mess!
Its forecast rain for a long time,
Three months no less!"
The leader shakes his head
And heaves a massive sigh.
"I guess it's back to mars, my friends,
though no humans have to die,
I'm sure we'll get em next time,
But for now we have to say goodbye.
I know the queen personally,
And the Prime Minister is my son,
I wish one day to come back
And I'm not the only one."
The aliens all nod
And retreat back into the ship,
One holding a small flag,
Another eating a bag of chips.

The crowd watches in astonishment
As the ship takes off for the stars,
Before shrugging rather weakly
And making for their cars.
"It’s nice for Gordon's family
To visit his new home,
Though I wish they weren't so scary,
And didn't steal my favourite gnome."

Meanwhile, in an office far above the ground,
An assistant files paperwork
And pockets another pound.
“I’m sorry sir, but not again,
They’re just too much to bear,
The ship killed my favourite hen,
And your auntie messed up my hair.
I’m sorry to break the news to you,
But, as a country we agree,
I don’t know what else to do
Except make them land in the sea.
So, we made a decision,
It’s essential I must say,
To avoid another collision
And to keep this country running OK.
So your ship is waiting, sir,
Ready to take you back to Mars,
We packed your son’s teddy bears,
And the keys to all your cars.”
With that,
They wave him off,
In a cloud of alien smoke.
Then the crowd all cheer
And with champagne they are soaked.

“He’s gone at last,
We can finally breathe once more!
More money for the hospitals,
And lower taxes for all!”
Let's Dance to Joy Division
And celebrate the irony,
Everything is going wrong,
But we're so happy!

When one door closes, another one opens. If not, just take out your jackhammer and break through that wall.
