Hope ticked off the day on her mini-calendar. It had been exactly 42 hours since Hope’s first encounter with Pretty-boy, or Jeffrey as she know knew him, and she had been avoiding him at all costs. Hope was one of the true believers in love at first sight, and though practically everyone that she told about Jeffrey, (everyone being her two close friends, Laura, and Suze) thought she was crazy, she still believed that her love was real. Perhaps that was why she was so set on avoiding him, because she knew she would end up talking about how she felt, a bad habit of hers. After straightening her bed, and all her pillows, she peeked out the doorway. Jeffrey was standing at the edge of the balcony, anxiously focusing his eyes on the front door. As the doorbell rang, he was gone in a flash down the stairs, and a beautiful, tall girl, with model features walked in the door.
Hope tried to breathe, but it was futile. Her mind spun dizzily as she questioned why her older sister Faith was home, and what she was doing kissing Jeffrey. She stabled herself on the bookshelf next to her door, hot tears already threatening to drip out of her eyes, like a leaky faucet in a run down shack.
Hope’s sister was twenty years old. She was on an international scholarship in Egypt, and hadn’t been home in practically two years. “Why must it be now that she decides to make her grand entrance?” Hope found herself sniffling out loud. She noticed a voice calling her, so she ran to her walk-in closet and hid under a pile of sheets. She wasn’t ready to face the world yet, especially the world of Faith.
“I thought I would find you here.” Hope awoke with a start, adjusting her eyes to the sudden beam of light streaming into her closet, “Of course you, of all people would be asleep in a closet while her sister returns from the longest trip of her life.” Faith laughed her same phlegmy laugh, and pulled the worn, sailor moon themed sheets from Hope’s body, “Haha. Deja Vu. Remember the time that my old boyfriend Mark and I accidentally locked you in here? And no one found you till that night?"
“Ah yes. You told me that there was a robber in the house, then pushed me in the closet and locked the door, to keep me ‘safe’.” Hope grumbled miserably, pulling herself up off the plush carpet.
“Lighten up Hope! You know we were just playing around. It was an accident that we forgot about you. I mean tons of people forgot about you back then. You were so quiet and little…” Faith’s voice trailed off when she saw her little sister’s face, swollen with tears, “Oh lighten up! I’m just playing.”
Hope wanted to tell her that she hadn’t been crying about all those awful memories, but she dared not, knowing that her sister would pressure her to admit what she was crying about.
“Welllll? Aren’t you going to give your big sis a hug?” Faith flashed her white, chiclet shaped teeth, then pulled Hope into her arms and squeezed her tightly, then released the one-way hug, and stood up. She brushed off her tight, designer jeans, “Freshen up, then come downstairs. I have some big news to tell everyone.” And with that she flounced out of the room, her perfect pony-tail swaying.
Hope wanted to run after her and confront her about kissing Jeffrey, but perhaps Hope was mistaken. Perhaps she had only thought she saw it. She could be wrong, and even if she wasn’t, Hope would never run after her. Hope hated confrontation.
Downstairs, her family plus Jeffrey’s were sitting around the table happily drinking champagne, their faces flushed from the alcohol. Faith and Jeffrey were sitting so close together that they were practically sitting on each other. Their arms were intertwined, and now and then Faith would kiss Jeffrey’s neck. Hope couldn’t help but notice that Jeffrey looked the smallest bit uncomfortable. Jeffrey’s father, a big burly man, also the CEO of some major car company or something, spotted her hiding in the doorway. He was obviously quite drunk, and his two of the buttons had popped on his shirt thanks to his beer belly, revealing hairy skin. Repulsed, Hope quickly tried to make her escape, but thanks to the champagne in his body, he opened his wide mouth.
“Hope! Come, sit, drink!” He offered her a glass of champagne. Hope waited for her parents to decline this offer, but they were too busy chatting with Jeffrey and Faith. Finally, she shook her head at his offer, and sat down quietly on a chair a great distance away from Jeffrey’s father.
“Nice of you to finally join us Hopeyy.” Her older sister slurred drunkenly. Hope gave a weak smile, “We have some huge news.” Jeffrey looked up from the lima beans he was pushing around his plate as Faith elbowed him.
“Ah right.” He said uncomfort
ably, “You see Hope…your sister and I are…” His voice trailed off. Everyone around the table urged him on with their eyes, excluding Hope.
“For God’s Sake Jeff!” Faith speared the moment with her sharp tongue, “Hope, Jeff and I are getting married.”

Notice: It seems that some of you have problems with my chapters. Maybe you were just finding something to complain about, but I prefer short chapters with separate thoughts, so deal.
