Yeah, I'm with you guys. Just looking at the page before this and seeing Lord of the Rings, Moby Dick and Huckleberry Finn - three spectacular novels, with Moby being widely regarded as the finest novel ever written - makes me sad.
There's no reason to be sad...I mean you can expect everyone to love a book, be it classic or not. Everyone has different tastes. Like, I know I loved The Great Gatsby, Lolita, Animal Farm, and 1984 and I know people who absolutely hated them. I think they're brilliant, but I don't find it upsetting that people hate them. It's all a matter of opinion. I love reading, but just because I don't enjoy a couple of classics doesn't mean that I have silly opinions. Just my two cents.

Dahlia >> I don't think people are sad/concerned that others dislike classics. If anything, that's kind of inevitable with any group of people. I think it's problematic though that people are calling them the worst books ever.

I don't think you should be complaining on a fully opinionated thread. It's not the person's fault that they dislike a book you enjoyed. It's all what they thought. Not what they thought others would react in a pleasing manner towards.

I absolutely hated a Certain Slant of Light. Worst book in the world in my opinion.

I won't lie, I found Jane Austen's 'Emma' to be a terrible bore.
However, the worst book I've read is probably 'Brisingr' by Chris Paolini. I read on after Eragon out of sheer curiosity as to whether the man would actually bother improving/put down his copies of LOTR and think up his own damn ideas. I was wrong.
Ah, but see--while Emma may be boring (not to me, but I know others don't like more archaic styles), it's not a bad book. It's actually very subtly done with a lot of attention to detail.
But I agree. Paolini is crap.
For me, the worst book I've ever read has to be... anything by Mercedes Lackey. I liked her a lot when I was in elementary/middle school, but I picked one of my favorites up a few months ago and almost cried. It's horrible.

I don't agree with dick and huck fin but I thought the lord of the rings books were terrible. like filing a tax report. however, I loved the hobbit, I just hated the style tolkein wrote in for LOTR.
Paolini: it helps getting famous when your parents OWN the company that publishes your books.
No Time To Say Goodbye was a so-so thriller, but put it this way, I could have read the thing and worked out the plot even if I was sitting in a lift going up and down on the sharp end of a broom, wearing a pair of black out glasses.
