Hello! I'm new here and I thought I'd introduce myself by asking you all a question. Have you ever memorized poetry? One of my teachers once told me that a professor of hers said that memorizing poems was important because if you were ever imprisoned alone all that you would have to keep yourself sane would be the poems you had memorized... OK... It was a strange idea but memorization has fascinated me ever since. So far I've only got two in my head, but I've still got a lifetime to add more...
There's a sonnet by Shakespeare that goes something like this:

Devouring time blunt thou the lion's paws
and make the earth swallow her own sweet brood
Pluck the keen teeth from the fierce tiger's jaws
and burn the long lived phoenix, in her blood
Make glad and happy seasons as thou fleet'st
and do what ever thou wilt, swift footed time
to the wide world and all her fading sweets.
But I forbid thee one most heinous crime:
O carve not with thy hours my love's fair brow
Nor draw no lines there with thine antique pen
Him in thy course untainted do allow
for beauty's pattern in succeeding me
Yet do thy worst, old time, despite thy wrong
My love shall in my verse ever live young.

Post a poem you've memorized, I'm very curious to see if anyone else does this and what poems people have got rattling around in their brains.
Also hello to everyone! I'm very excited to get started here.

I'm so lame, I can't even remember the 10-word poem my friend wrote. I can, however, remember a lovely limerick another friend wrote:

Zac Efron is really hot
I desire for him a lot
One day we will marry
And drink some nice sherry.
We'll toast the fact we tied the knot.

How utterly profound! :P If that's all I remember in prison, I'm screwed.

I actually remember another one, from Spongebob:

There once was a man from Peru
Who dreamed he was eating his shoe
He woke with a fright
In the middle of the night
To find that his dream had come true.

Anyway, HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERE'S YOUR GIFT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :) :( :o :shock: :? 8) :lol: :x :P :oops: :cry: :evil: :twisted: :roll: :wink: :!: :?: :idea: :arrow: :| :mrgreen: :elephant: :thud: :smt006 :smt005 :smt004 :smt051 :smt059 :smt065 :smt077 :smt084 :smt116 :smt027 :smt028 :smt032 :smt034 :smt035 :smt031 :smt026 :smt024 :smt041

Hola and welcome to YWS!!

If you ever need anything at all then feel free to pm me and I'll be happy to help you out as best as I can.

Ah, memorizing is hard at times when you have the memory of a gold fish. :roll:

I know the beginning of Shakespeare's Sonnet 130 off by heart:
My mistresses' eyes are nothing like the sun,
Coral is far more red than her lips red,
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun.

I can't recall the rest but it's my favourite.

All the best,
Alainna

Welcome to YWS. I'm Rick. I hope you enjoy the site as much as we all do. After you get 25 reviews, you can access the YWS chatroom and talk about any work you're doing, ask for crits for anything, ask anyone if they have something they want/need critted, and/or just hang out in and talk about your day. Before you post your own work, you need atleast two crits. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions/concerns about anything.

Bye.

-Rick.

Hey Valiant! Welcome to YWS and all that introductory loveliness.

The only poem I have ever memorised is WB Yeats' "He Wishes For The Clothes Of Heaven":

Had I the heavens' embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half-light,

I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.

Welcome to YWS!

I memorised 'If' by Rudyard Kipling ages ago. Can still remember it, I think. Let's test...

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too.
If you can wait, and not be tired of waiting.
Of being lied about don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give into hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise...

If you can dream-and not make dreams your master,
If you can think-and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those imposters both the same;
If you can bear to hear the words you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you give your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up again with worn out tools.

It's really long though (there are two more verses I think) but yep, still remember it...
Everywhere I go I'm asked if I think the university stifles writers. My opinion is that they don't stifle enough of them. There's many a bestseller that could have been prevented by a good teacher. ~Flannery O'Connor
