This is my first piece of writing posted on here, so please be patient if I do something wrong. I take very hard critiques well...they make me better. If my grammar is not up to par, take me to task. I should know better. Please review, and thank you.
Sarah’s Eyes
Sarah’s eyes never left the page.
Outside, the sound of fighting grew louder and louder still. Screams pierced through the air to echo in the ears of the listener. Crashes like bombs leapt at unsuspecting victims.
Sarah’s eyes never left the page.
Here in her safe place, she was supposed to be invincible. Nothing bad could touch her. Except for the sounds. The sounds that she could hear all the time, even in her dreams.
As the screams grew louder, she pulled her knees in closer to her, but her eyes never left the page.
The page soon turned into another, and that page to another. The binding of the weathered book in her hands was cracking, the pages fading. Sarah’s eyes moved down the yellowed page, her eyes like hungry men devouring a feast.
The sounds outside could not touch the pages of the book. Only Sarah’s eyes could touch them.
With the sounds of war growing nearer and nearer, Sarah left her world of war and dove into another. Another beautiful world, where white knights rescued beautiful maidens and cunning girls outwitted evil warlocks. A world where wise wizards walked the streets and golden palaces adorned the horizon. A world where dragons flew over in the sky and untouched forests grew in abandon.
A world where there was no war.
This world was anything and everything she wanted it to be. It was her lifeline, the one thing that held onto her when all else failed. It grew and prospered under her nurturing care. In her mind, the world was perfect.
When Sarah closed her eyes, it was real.
When she opened them again, it was gone, replaced by reality.
The sounds of war always grew louder, unceasing in their torment. The screams of innocent victims still filled the air. The war was very much alive, feeding off of everything it could hold on to.
Except Sarah. Sarah had an escape, a place to run to when everything was wrong.
The endless war continued on.
Sarah’s eyes never left the page.
