Dear Committee Members,
I am writing this letter to nominate the Inca and the Maya for awards for their food and agriculture. After researching these cultures, I believe based on their advances knowledge and hard work, they deserve these awards.
I think the Maya should be given an award for their food and agriculture. However, I will primarily be focusing on the food. The Maya’s main crops were squash, corn, cacao, and cotton. They also were supurb bee keepers and produced large volumes of honey. Mayans hunted both turkey and ducks and were known for their hunting prowess with these prey, It’s interesting to note that they hunted animals that were hard to hunt in those times and that these animals were not ones typically hunted by other cultures. They also farmed cacao which was used as a form of currency. In comparison to the other cultures food, the Maya’s food had more variety and required some skill. For exmple, bee keeping requires knowing when and how to gather honey and some skill in order not to be stung by bees when gathering. Its’s also important that they used cacao as money which the other cultures existing at that time did not.
I am nominating the Inca for their arts and sciences. The Inca’s used balance beams to measure the weight of objects, and a counting instrument called the quipu. They used molds to make jewelry, which was mainly gold and silver. The Incas also stand out because they had thoughtful ways of using numbers to count and weigh objects which the other cultures existing at that time had not used.
I also think the Inca deserve another award, in conception of time. This in my opinion showed much higher reasoning since it means they were aware of a “time line” where there is a present, future and past. Interestingly enough, the Inca’s calendar was very similar to ours, it had 12 months consisting of 30 days each, and they also had a second calendar, the solar calendar. The Inca had a ritual for each month of the year, which shows that they were aware that each month represented a different segment of time. Because the calendar was closer to ours, unlike the Maya, who had had 18 months with 20 days each, the Inca deserve to receive the award for conceiving time.
In conclusion, I was extremely impressed by these two ancient cultures, they astounded me with their advanced knowledge and usage of time. It was truly amazing for me to find that the Maya had made so much use of the food around them, and how the Inca had figured out months, days, and years, so easily, and at the same time had made advances in their arts and sciences, I really recommend these two cultures for these awards, they very much deserve them.
