So... French influence. My great-great-grandmother was a Mare. My six-greats-grandfather was born in 1769. His grandfather was born most probably in France, but probably ended up in Italy beforehand as he was a Huguenot.

@lehmanf my great-great grandparents were Huguenots as well!! But they fled to the Netherlands.

Oh! The person who married my six-greats-grandfather’s father was the daughter of someone who did the same before moving to SA.
