The troll let out a horrendous scream and lashed out. The hunters dropped back. After three days they had finally tracked the beast back to its lair. Dreg screamed at his tormentors and grabbed one around the throat. He snapped the pitiful mans throat with barely any effort. Dreg towered over the five men at nine feet tall, his reach was immense and the hunters tried to back further away. Dregs grey-green skin looked sickly in the torchlight emitting from the torches carried by two of the hunters.
Dreg just wanted to be left along. He knew he was ugly and his lower teeth jutted from his lower jaw but why. Why were these humans hunting him? Dreg stayed high in the mountains in his cave, when hunger struck he would catch a deer or one of the mountains goats that roamed the area. Dreg cried out and swung for another hunter. Not once had he gone near the huts these men lived in, it was unfair. Dreg leapt forward and pushed past the hunter and ran out onto the snow covered slopes.
He didn’t find any respite. At least a dozen of the humans were sat upon the strange beasts they used for moving to different places. Dregs fists worked furiously. He knocked three out the saddle in one massive swing. One human spurred forward on its beast and stabbed at Dreg with a pointed stick. It took him in the chest and Dreg stumbled. Another did the same and Dreg screamed out in pain.
“Why?” Dreg screamed out.
This stunned the humans. It had spoken, how could a beast like this speak? Dreg had learned to speak from a dying traveller who been attacked by bandits. The man had stumbled into Dregs cave and Dreg had cared for him. It took a few weeks for the man to die but in that time Dreg had learned some of the human’s language.
“Why kill Dreg?” He asked them. It took the humans a few moments to reply.
“Because you are a beast! You would kill us if given the chance!” The man who had replied was covered in furs, around his neck hung a chain of troll teeth.
“Dreg not kills. You kill Dreg!” Dreg slapped his chest. He pulled the lances from his chest and threw them to the ground. Letting out a scream of anger Dreg moved towards the men.
Five arrows slashed throw the air and pierced his chest. Three more men with lances drove them into Dreg. Letting out another scream Dreg fell to the floor. Blood bubbled at his mouth. One of the hunters ran forward with an axe ready to hack Dregs head from his shoulders. Lashing out Dreg caught him a vicious blow that drove ribs into lungs. Others ran forward and began plunging swords into Dregs body.
Dreg let out another yell and all the men stopped. They looked at the troll as it died. Some threw their swords to the ground, mounted and rode off. Others just stared. For the single word the beast had screamed out had simply been. “Murder”
