The outside sun shone down on Lunar High, sifting through the trees of an emerald forest surrounding it, diving into a creek near by. Teens of mixed ages darted across the grass, scattering the morning dew. A marvelous castle-like building housing a shimmering dome stood at the south tree line. Although the teens were considered normal amongst themselves, society called them differently.
These teens were different, isolated, from the rest of the world. One boy who had electric blue fire for hair ran from his friends who had their eyes intently set on the foot ball in the flame boys hands. Another female was reappearing in random places every couple of minutes.
A group of five in particular sat underneath a large willow tree, laughing and talking to each other. One boy was of tall, sturdy build, clean combed hair fell neatly around his head, icy eyes clearly showing on his face. The second boy was a stick of a person, slightly longer, lighter, and messier hair was stacked on his head. Round, thin glassed covered his tan eyes.
The girls of the group were of more variety. The first girl was African American and had medium length length hair in zig-zag cornrows. Her dark blue eyes, laced with streaks of gold, darted back and forth, reading a book held by dainty hands. Over the reading girl leaned a taller girl, her bright lime eyes darted in unison with the eyes of the reading girls.
The last girl of the group was the strangest of them. Tawny hair fell down to her jaw, casually messed around, streaks of black wove into the tan. Her olive skin flowed to the bottom of her stomach which slowly melded into the body of a black horse, with a tail the same tawny color peppered with black. The centaur form only came from the mind of a overall shape shifter, one who could take the shapes of his or her imagination as well as real forms. The centaur and the black haired girl talked with with the boys while the other two continued to read. The tall boy sat next to the centaur and raven haired while the thin boy sat further back.
"Come on Kryn! That's not funny!" exclaimed the African American girl.
The tall boy, Kryn, laughed a low, rolling laugh.
"Yes it is! Calista should agree with me, she's been in that position before."
He laughed again. The African American girl rolled her eyes and returned to her book. Calista, the centaur, shot a glare at him. Kryn returned the glare with a scolding, serious face.
"Don't you make that face at me, you know I'm right."
Calista narrowed her eyes and stuck her tongue out. Kryn rolled his eyes and muttered, You're such a two year old.
The tall girl reading over Haylin, the African American girls, shoulder slowly shook her head.
"Don't do it." She said in a serious tone, "You'll get your butt whooped."
Calista looked at the tall girl called Saurina. Sighing Calista started to change. Her bones cracked as they compacted and melded themselves into human legs. As she was doing this she snapped frantically at Haylin, Haylin's green dress ruffled as she pointed a dark finger at Calista and then pointed up. A wall of rock rose up around her. Eyes still on her book, Haylin reached into a bag at her side and drew out some black capris then threw them over the wall. A shuffle and another snap and the wall went down, revealing Calista with human legs wearing the capris Haylin threw over. Smiling Calista sat back into her place. Suddenly, Calista flicked her foot so she was squatting, rotated the other foot sideways and sent a roundhouse kick to Kryn's chest.
Kryn, having listening to the tall girls warning, caught Calista's foot lazily. As he did his veins could be seen from under his skin, only, they were light gray, not blue or red. Calista's eyes rolled back into her head and she slumped down so Kryn held her by one foot. Shaking her head, Calista's eyes momentarily went back to normal. Her second foot went for his jaw. Kryn's other hand caught her foot easily. Once again Calista went limp and her eyes rolled back into her head.
The group burst out laughing as Kryn held Calista like a new shot turkey, a large grin on his face. Haylin started to calm down, wiping tears from her eyes. Saurina hadn't laughed but quizzically looked at Calista as she hung from Kryn's hands. She then showed a faint smile and looked at Kryn.
"The mute says Let me go before you put me to 'sleep'."
Kryn looked down apologetically at Calista and dropped her with a hollow thunk onto the grass. Calista clutched her head and rolled onto her side.
"David, go get some water for Calista, would you?" Saurina asked, "She says her head hurts.
The boy with glasses looked at the direction of the stream. A gust of wind and he was gone, another and David was back with a bucket of water. David walked up to Calista, the bucket swung, letting out slops of water all over his running shoes and sweat pants. He ducked his head down so it was barely above her shoulder. He stood, waiting a few moments then quietly whispered,
"My patience is dwindling. Would you like to drink to water or wear it?"
Emitting a soft sigh, Calista lifted her hand up for David to set his load on. David transmitted the handle to Calista's hand effortlessly and went to sit down again.
