i yearn for a day coming
when my thoughts connect
the bitter grasp of freshly tilled earth
no longer
when my soul lays to rest either
between that sweet-smelling soil
or the recesses of a repaired mind

she leads me to greener pastures; ephemeral
in the fleeting daylight, cast shadows on old iron,
forgotten by blistering steam and burning coal, signals
merged by merger, switched by switchers, aged by
root and soil. I am but a man, strong as any machine,
cold as steel, heartless and headless all at once, thrown
to the elements, rusted through, pockmarked by auburn, lingering
in the overlooks; overlooked even in overgrown nature, merciful in death.
