Freeze-dried food without adding boiled water sounds nasty! Google says cold water will do the trick with more time, but I'm skeptical haha. I don't know these characters' personalities, but I bet the practical one is more optimistic about it ("Just has a little crunch is all") whereas the other one is disgusted ("A little crunch? It's supposed to be mashed potatoes! In what world are mashed potatoes cold and crunchy?!").
