(No doubt! He grew up in the 50s in the backwoods of WV so he was every bit as racist, homophobic, conservative as you’d imagine as I was growing up but he started working on himself when I was a teenager. I noticed when I got my buzzcut he stopped making homophobic comments in front of me (meanwhile the rest of my family ramped up and got even worse, even though at the time I was still in the closet even to myself and was hardcore repressing) and so I decided to risk coming out to him last year before I came out publicly and this 70-year-old redneck took it in stride and it didn’t change our relationship at all. Like. I wouldn’t necessarily call him an ally lol he said minorly problematic things during the convo but it was obviously he was trying extremely hard to say the right thing and I really, really appreciate the effort. A few of my siblings have been disowned so it wasn’t outside the realm of possibilities lol so I’m really glad I read him correctly. It’s nice to not have to lose my dad just because I’m queer)
