After dinner, Gaius went down to the barracks to talk to Derik.

Derik had eaten his fill of the dinner brought to them and now was stretched out on his bunk — the bottom one in the very corner of the room. Rek and Kieran were both sitting on the bunk above him chatting quietly, and Akeno was on the top bunk one over sitting upright contributing to the conversation sometimes between writing in his journal.
Rek was first to spot Ash when he walked in the room. “Da—“ he cut himself off. “General Ainsley.”
Derik cracked an eye at the started ‘dad’ and sat up when Rek switched to his title, glancing over at the door then standing up. He was so weary. And it took everything within him not to groan or sigh or both. Couldn’t the night just end already? Still, he swallowed down the self pity and put a kindly smile on his face.

“That’s fine.” Derik shrugged and turned, handing it up to Rek for safekeeping. He nodded and set it next to him silently. Derik turned back to Gaius. “Shall we?”
