“Oof.” Ky shivered at the thought of going swimming up here. She didn’t even really like going outside. It was way too cold. “I imagine you’d go numb in an instant up here. That sounds awful.”

"I've heard tell of men in the Far North who've swum two miles in near-frozen water," Gaius said thoughtfully. "They oiled themselves with whale or seal blubber beforehand, and apparently that helps."

“Why would you, though? We just swam to cool off; you don’t need that up here.”

(Finally made a whole map of this world, not just the one continent)

"I think it's an exercise thing," Anneliese said. "And maybe they have a way of hunting fish up there? But I can't imagine there are any fish alive under all that ice."
"I've read of some adaptive creatures that have survived underwater in those oceans." Gaius leaned forward. "They employ a technique similar to those men, secreting oil and packing on a lot of blubber to keep themselves warm. It's how seals and walruses survive, too. And the white bears, though you don't see very many of those."

(Nice!!!)

Ky nodded. “The creature book I used to have talked about a whale with a horn that lived under the ice… I don’t know if those are real or not, though.”

Gaius thought back to his books. "Yes, I've heard of that. A narwhal, right?"
"A what?" Anneliese's eyebrows shot up. "That's real??"
"Quite real." Gaius nodded. "I've read some accounts of their existence. A horn was taken as a souvenir by an explorer by the name of Errol Gys, but that's been lost to time."

"I want to see one of those one day," Anneliese said wistfully. "Are they friendly?"
"I have no idea," Gaius admitted. "There was nothing about socialization in that particular account."

“Seems like it’d be hard to make friends with it through the ice,” Ky mused. “Regardless.”

"Certainly. Ice is bound to get in the way of anything, including ships. I'm surprised anybody can get anywhere through the Perisian Ocean." Gaius shook his head. "Much safer to sail through one of the other three."

Ky was silent for a moment. “I don’t know much about any of the other continents or oceans.”

"The other continents are amazing places," Gaius said, enthusiasm seeping into his voice. "Have your travels never taken you across the sea?"

Ky smiled at his sudden change of energy, shaking her head. “No. Never.”

"I highly recommend it, should you get the chance. If you think the cultures here are diverse, you'd be blown away by the other continents. And the landscapes are just as different!" Gaius's right hand twitched spasmodically as he grew a bit more animated. "Take Southern Orthos, for example. It's entirely wet, hot forest with the most bizarre creatures you've ever seen. Things called monkeys that have human eyes and long tails, striped cats even bigger than mountain cats, snakes with eyes as large as a human head. And the people in Southern Orthos..." He trailed off, recalling vividly the strangeness of that continent, the customs and the weather.

Ky nodded eagerly, taking it all in. “What are they like?”
