Beckett Hale

Return to Strands of Silver and Gold

Creator: winterwolf0100
Roleplay: Strands of Silver and Gold
Nickname: Beck, Beckett

Name: Beckett Hale
Age: 22
Gender and pronouns: Bigender, uses she/her and he/him but will tell you when to change it, so it's not necessarily changing with every post.
Appearance: Beckett has long dreadlocks that go just past her shoulders, and most of the time she has them pulled back in a low ponytail. She has pale golden-brown skin and umber eyes, with a septum piercing and a nostril piercing, both with silver rings. She also has an industrial piercing on her left ear, and she usually wears a barbell jewelry piece that has chains hanging down from it, also silver. She's tall and slim, flat-chested. She sometimes has just a hint of a beard, but most of the time it's shaved.
Personality: Beckett is a wild card. She has a crazy energy that most people get overwhelmed or annoyed by, and tends to push a lot of buttons in the process, though it isn't on purpose. She's loud and sarcastic, and tends to find people doing stupid things extremely funny, so if she starts laughing, now you know you've done something. She can seem like an open book to a lot of people, but she really isn't. It's not that she has a secret soft side somewhere inside her somehow, she just doesn't usually choose to access it. And it's not about being vulnerable or anything, she doesn't really get shaken by much of that stuff. She does seem a bit insensitive to some people before they get to know her, but she's the youngest of six children and the only one without some type of magic, so she had to make up for it with her grabby personality. She might jokingly insult someone, but she's not going to fully insult unless she's really really angry, and the difference is very clear. The strong emotions she feels most of the time are a shove-it-in-your-face joy and pride in herself, and anger comes along every now and again. In terms of sadness, she's not very good at handling it and isn't really sure what to do about it. She's not going to break down crying in front of anyone-- again, not because of vulnerability issues, but because she's going to be covering up her sadness in some other way.
Backstory: Beckett grew up traveling with his parents and five older siblings. His parents are travelling potion-makers who keep everything on the down-low; their potions helped to heal or hurt people, or a number of things in-between. When asked what they did for a living, they would always say they were travelling merchants and traders. Beckett's older brothers and sisters helped to "collect" ingredients from random people's gardens and the forests. Around the age of six, Beckett started as the person to go into the stores and take things, mainly because they could play it off as the child not knowing any better if he got caught. Most of the time, he didn't.

His siblings all stayed with the family even after reaching adulthood-- family business and all-- and all began to harness their own personal forms of magic in secret. Eventually, the eldest son fell in love and got married and left, leaving his magic a secret life behind him. Then, the two eldest daughters. Beckett's two remaining brothers who stayed studied their magic seriously, using their own personal powers to help further their business and keep the law off their tracks. Considering any known or suspected 'witches' were hanged, they all had to be careful. And once Beckett was an adult, he had to be all the more careful with anything he stole, even though he himself was extremely reckless, because if he were caught stealing something big enough, he would be killed for his crimes. At the age of eighteen, he was caught breaking into a store and imprisoned for a month while his family scrambled for the money to get it out. He was left with a warning that if he were to steal again, he would be hanged the next time. He ended up, over the course of the next few years, drifting away from his family; he always felt like an outsider not having magic and he wanted to explore some of the world on his own and maybe stay in the same place for a while instead of moving so often.

And now, at the age of twenty-two, four years later, he's been caught again because somehow, against all the odds, when he tried flirting with the shop-owner's daughter, he found out she was married, and apparently she knew some pretty cool fighting moves because she knocked him out. She presumably felt awful and was trying to make sure he was okay when she noticed everything he'd stolen. She felt bad and didn't want to report him since she'd hit him, but her father told the local law enforcement that she hit him in self-defense rather than out of annoyance so she wouldn't get in trouble. And here Beckett is again, about to be hanged with a group of other thieves.
Secret: Beckett has never been in a relationship, for however much she flirts. Maybe it's the barrier of her gender in their society, or maybe it's just that she's never been interested in someone. Honestly, moving around so constantly, she's never known where to even start. She has no idea how her siblings did it.
Other: Beckett has always felt extremely left out and lonely because he was the only one in his family that didn't begin to show signs of magic. However much they're hated and ridiculed and killed for it, it still felt like he was missing some big part of himself and his heritage by not having it.
