Return to 999: Nine Hours - Nine Persons - Nine Doors

Creator: AvantCoffee
Roleplay: 999: Nine Hours - Nine Persons - Nine Doors
Nickname: Fox

Code Name: Fox (like the nine-tailed fox from East Asian folklore)
Actual Name: Karma Melnyk
Gender: Male
Age: 25
Sexuality: Bisexual
Number: 9

Physical Appearance: Bold and coltish, this young Ukrainian man bounces around his environment like a child in a playground. He is very much in his body, and if vitality were a crime, he would be serving a life sentence. You will often see him sitting in unusual places, sliding down stairway railings, rapping his knuckles against surfaces, and swinging off low ceiling beams or bunk beds. His dark, disheveled hair and casual grunge attire paint him as careless, but there is a serious determination in his grey eyes that suggests something else entirely. His signature item is the blue bandana tied around his forehead.

Personality: He feels sorry for idealistic people, in the same way people feel sorry for birds that crash into windows. His view of reality is harshly pragmatic, but it comes from his desire to protect others from potential harm... and a wound from the past. He is all for the "act now, think later" attitude, and can't stand waiting around for others to make up their minds. He is always open to new, spontaneous ideas, and would rather do something than nothing at all. His language is sincere and measured, like a solid anchor to his energetic body (although that doesn't mean he won't appreciate the witty side of things). He will never pretend to be anything he is not, and will get annoyed at those who are fake or believe themselves to be superior or more worthy than others. All in all, he is a free-spirited body with a grounded mind.

History: His childhood consisted of constant movement. At first it was due to his father’s romanticized dream of world travel, which ended in disappointment and an empty wallet. Then it was moving back and forward between his parents’ apartments after his mother issued a divorce. Then it was staying over at friends’ houses to avoid his father’s newfound alcohol addiction… Perhaps that is why Karma can never sit still—moving has been his only permanent home. Before the ship abduction, he remembers working as a taxi driver in England and sharing an apartment with two roommates. Even then, before waking on the cruise liner, he felt trapped in his reality, like his whole life was stuck in a never-ending loop.

Ulterior Motives and/or Secrets: For some reason the cruise ship feels familiar somehow... and he seems to know things without any plausible explanation. He has no recollection of being on the ship before, but now and then he gets flashing visions—horrific images, and a disturbing voice in his head. He thinks these visions will drive him mad if he doesn't get out of the ship soon, but he won't tell anyone about them. Who knows what he'll do if these visions prove truthful.

Strengths: He is good at thinking objectively and not letting his emotions carry him away. He knows a lot about travel and world information and can recognize aspects of a place that others might have missed. He adjusts to new circumstances effortlessly and acts quickly and confidently under pressure.

Weaknesses: He has a tendency to rush into things, and will often force others to decide without fully considering all the options. He has a hard time distinguishing between optimism and idealism in people, and might unhelpfully point out the raw facts of their bad situation, causing even more anxiety. He is mildly claustrophobic, and his biggest fear is permanent attachment, whether that be to people or places.
