Beatrice "Bea" Bocci

About You
Please answer a series of questions so we can all get to know you better.

Spoiler
Q: Do you identify as a male, a female, or something else?
A: I’m a girl! My name’s Bea! You can call me “Bee” if you want. Like, I won’t be able to tell.

Q: How old are you?
A: 19

Q: Which universe are you from?
A: Maple World, of course! I’m from the desert city of Ariant, which people here insist on comparing to some place called “Eee-jipped”? Weird.

Q: What are your powers?
A: Oh! I got Eckhart to write down the skills I should focus on. Here...

Name: Lucky Sevens
Description: Bea’s ability to hurl her steelies. She throws two at once for moderate damage which will improve as she trains. Her accuracy will also improve with practice.

Name: Dark Sight
Description: Dark Sight enables Bea, while out of sight, to turn invisible. The effect lasts even if her target or pursuer looks in her direction while it’s active, but she must be out of their line of sight to initiate the effect. She can also end the invisibility early at will, whether someone is looking in her direction or not. If she is hit the invisibility will end unless she has enough experience (in which she will get better as the storybook progresses) and is able to focus hard enough. She reappears in a burst of smoke when the invisibility ends in any way.

Name: Flash Jump
Description: Basically a double jump. When in midair, Bea can propel herself further with a burst of purple energy. Her ability to control the jump’s direction and power is not dependent on any stat, but on how much practice and experience she has with it.

Name: Vampire
Description: Bea summons one to four shadow Stirges (a species of bat native to Maple World) from nearby shadows to suck energy from nearby enemies and bring it back to Bea to heal her wounds. She will only be able to summon one at a time early on and will have to wait a while before she can use Vampire again.

Name: Shadow Partner
Description: A very advanced and rarely attempted technique. In theory, Bea is able to form a copy of herself from nearby shadows. The copy, ideally, will follow her telepathic commands and enable Bea to effectively be in two places at once, or else to amplify her damage output by mimicking her attacks. In practice, Shadow Partner requires long and arduous training before the user is even able to cast the copy. In casting, Bea must also split her vitality with the copy so as to give it energy to exist. Maintaining the copy’s form requires great focus and becomes more of a strain on the user’s mind the longer it lasts, so improper focus can cause it to dissipate; in rare cases it has been known to break free of the user’s control and run amok. If the copy is unsummoned, or fades due to lack of concentration or energy, its health is returned to Bea; but if the copy is killed that health is lost and Bea must recover by normal means.

Q: Which superhero, supervillain, or video game hero/villain is your parent or relative? Are there more than one?
A: Kinda! My dad isn’t really super super, but he’s the boss of the Sand Bandits! Those guys are crazy skilled, and they help out all the struggling lower-class citizens of the city ever since that creepy fairy queen Areda sneaked onto the throne.
Then there’s Eckhart! He’s Chief of the Night Walkers and one of Empress Cygnus’s highest-ranking recruits. See, when I was about twelve I started sneaking out and watching the Sand Bandits do their thing, and between learning the tricks of the trade from them and preventing them from spotting me, I became pretty good at sneaking around! Good enough to attract the attention of Eckhart, who took me on as an apprentice and, at the end of my training, made me an official Night Walker. F’real.
My mom? Um… I’m not sure. My dad kinda… jumps from one woman to another, y’know? But I think maybe it’s Eleska. At least I hope it is, ‘cause she’s a badass.

Q: Are you a hero, or a recovering villain?
A: I’m a Knight of Cygnus! That’s like the most good you can get! I know that kinda sounds like Knight of Cerebus, but it’s NOT.

Q: Tell us about your social skills. How well do you get along with others?
A: I get along fine with people. It’s them that get all wound up because I LOVE TOO MUCH. It’s always “personal space” this and “now’s not the time” that, and the occasional “damn it Bea don’t you ever knock, get out of here and let me get dressed”.

Q: If you had a choice between love, power, or helping others, which would you choose?
A: Wouldn’t be much of a hero, or Knight of Cygnus, or Sand Bandit (well, sort of), if I didn’t pick that last option. Don’t get me wrong, power and love are great, but I thought the whole point of coming here was to learn how to protect the innocent. And fight bad guys. That’s the other bit I’m looking forward to!

Q: Are you excited to be attending The Academy?
A: *squeals* Are you kidding me? Hey Bea you’re about to go and meet the most powerful fighters of the entire multiverse and hang out with them and fight with them and have slumber parties with them are you excited? uh yeah it sounds kinda cool I guess NO, THIS IS FREAKING AMAZING.

Q: What is your best memory? Your worst?
A: Huh. I think the worst was when everyone watched Queen Areda’s coronation. I mean, it didn’t seem so bad at the time, even though something just felt wrong about the whole thing. But that was the start of the city’s decline into poverty, as Areda squandered the wealth that came from being royalty. I don’t think anyone had any doubts that her marriage to the King was a total play for power, but he didn’t say anything. Well, how could he? He sleeps unnaturally long hours these days, and even when he’s awake he’s barely lucid. And of course the dignitaries from Orbis couldn’t do anything, because everything about her officially checks out. There’s something really fishy going on there, and when I’ve become the sneakiest thief-type in the multiverse I’m going to find out her secret and have her expelled from the throne. And force her to leave Ariant! And maybe I’ll make her wander the desert for forty-three years with only a jive-talking monkey for company! And then I’ll buy the movie rights and it’ll be a box-office hit!
… Uh. Anyway. My best memory is a really easy one. See this medal I’m wearing, right there? When Eckhart deemed me ready, he presented it to me in front of the entire population of Ereve, and I received the blessing of Shinsoo, and Empress Cygnus herself placed the medal on my top, and everyone cheered, and Chewie roared and R2 made beeping noises like he always does and… wait, no, that wasn’t me. Still, the real version was pretty great.

Q: Would you consider yourself a team leader, a damage dealer, a supporter, or a tank?
A: Um, pretty sure I could do either damage or support. Like, killing things with shurikens, or sneaking around stealing information, y’know? Definitely haven’t got the build to act as a tank.

Q: Do you plan on participating in any extracurricular activities? This can include sports or any clubs on campus. You may join multiple, as long as you can dedicate yourself to each.
A: Ohhhh, I dunno. More work? I don’t thiWAIT THERE’S A CHEERLEADING CLUB? SIGN ME UP SCOTTY

B-but I haven't told you about my Mimio yet! He’s my best friend! I mean, aside from all my other best friends. Which is pretty much everyone. Anyway. Basically, all Knights of Cygnus are expected to have some sort of a mount; it’s more to do with appearance than actual utility, which is kind of bizarre, but I really really wanted one so I didn’t complain. I tended to my egg until Mimiana (that’s what a Mimio hatchling is called) hatched, and for the first year his eyes were still closed, so I had to lead him everywhere. Not much of a mount, really. But then his eyes opened and he recognised me from my smell (he’s an animal with a highly developed nose! Trust me, I do not reek that badly) and I was finally able to ride him around! I usually keep him in the Ereve stables and summon him when I need a ride, but the Whistle won’t work if Mimio’s in Maple World and I’m all the way over here in the Academyverse! So I brought him to the Academy where the resident animal handler takes care of him.
