I second Sureal--all the names are original, even if the characters and plots aren't (one exception: Hrothgar was the king in Beowulf, did anyone else notice this?)

This seems rather "duh!" Ditto. Personally, I've generally found other races more attractive than my own (with a few notable exceptions).

Try Johnathan Stroud's Bartimaeus Trilogy . About half the books are written first-person point of view for Bartimaeus, a wise-cracking jinni (whom you will love ), and a good portion ...
