To start writing the novel I've been envisioning for close to a year now

I don't know if it's been said already, I didn't read all the comments, but will the ability to 'like' someone's work come back?

I've never really tried writing a real novel before. It's been mostly just short works and occasional poetry for a while and so I was wondering, how do I know ...

I would say that simplicity is best for an opening line. When I pick up a book and read, that's the kind of opening line that hooks me every time.
