"Observation," Aeron said. "Which is something fundamentally not allowed as part of 'faith'."

"No, ma'am." Talia shook her head, glancing down into the bag then back at Sera. "I don't think so, ma'am. Thank you."

"And what makes you so sure it's true?" he countered. "And you can't use it itself. Or any of your religious teachings. If your text and leaders didn't say it ...

"Thank you, ma'am." Talia dipped her head and stepped forward to take it. "That's very kind of you; I appreciate it."

"No. I've looked at her ." Aeron glanced over at them in the darkness. "I care about her as a person, not about what some books says I'm supposed to ...

Talia shifted awkwardly, tugging her dress straight as she blushed. "I..."

Aeron rolled his eyes. "She's just fine."

"Yes, ma'am!" Talia answered, nodding quickly. She hastily folded the blankets, hoping she'd been allowed to touch them.

"How?"

Talia sprang upright, blushing guiltily. "Sir?" She gathered up the furs she'd accidentally knocked on the ground.

Aeron sighed. "I can't imagine being so....." He sighed again. "Why the hell do you care? Let people live their lives. She's not hurting anyone."
