Congrats on your star :D Great work!

PEL Thank you Ellie Mae, but I don't know what a star means nor how I got it, but I presume it's something good. I could add a smiley face but I haven't figured how to add an icon yet.
    Mar 24, 2024

EllieMae Oh, no worries! Basically, on YWS you get a different amount of stars under your profile picture that represent how many reviews you have written on the site! You can read about the Star Ranking System right here! There are a lot of different icons that work on YWS using YWS Codes. To make the face I used, type :*D but remove the asterisk and it will work!

Congrats on that shiny star! 🌟

PEL Thank you Amaya, But I don't know what a stars means yet nor how I got one, but I assume it is a good thing to have. maybe you could enlighten me.
    Mar 24, 2024

NadyaStatham Hey Pel! You get stars by reviewing works. If you review 5 works you get one star. That's how you got your shiny star :) If you have any more questions feel free to reach out!

Ps: Smiley :*) (without the asterisk) As spearmint said in her welcome post, there's a link leading to all the emoji's

Hiya PEL, welcome to YWS! ^-^ This is a wonderful place for readers, writers, poets, roleplayers, and just people in general, and we're thrilled you're here! Here are some quick links you might want to check out:

FAQ for New Users This post lists the basics of publishing and reviewing works on YWS.
Official YWS Rules & Guides Here are our site rules. Essentially, please be a decent person and be considerate of others. :]
Knowledge Base This is a treasure trove of helpful articles about poetry, writing, reviewing, and more. One useful thread is the Big Book of YWS Codes, which is a guide to the bbcode that you can use on YWS to add colors, images, and more! Plus, see the list of icons (like ) here and the list of smilies (like :smt003 and :daddarth) here.
Review Tips This post has links to a ton of resources on reviewing. Reviews are how we give and receive feedback on our works on YWS! Please do not use AI or copy-paste reviews, as most writers are looking for unique human feedback. ^^ I know reviewing can be tough sometimes, especially if you feel like there's nothing to critique, but it gets easier with practice! And here is a great resource for reviewing writers more skilled than you.

Along with reviewing other ywsers' works and publishing your own works, you can have some fun in the Randomosity forums, join a roleplay, hang out on the People tab, or just explore the site. And of course, feel free to ask me or any moderator (junior or global) any questions you have! (You can hit the little black arrow below this post to reply right now.) I hope you'll like it here! =D

    PEL Hi herbalhour,
Thanks for your welcome. Are you a moderater, if so I could do with some help. I'm not very tech savvy. After I have opened my folder and named the Title and described the type of poems I have. How do I transfer my poems into my folder ? I have my poems in a draft folder on my lap top and also in my emails. Could you explain that process for me please. Do you have to copy and paste them or something like that ? 2nd. question: After using your first free 200 points to publish, do you have to earn another 200 points each time you wish to publish something ? 3rd. question: How much can you publish each time. Is there a word limit ? One of my poems is very long, more like a short story, but it would not work if it had to be broken up. Are short stories or novels given more space than poems ? 4th question: If I get a notification, it say I can see it on my wall and there is a link to do so. But can I go straight to my wall and if so where would I find it. I would like to get started,so I hope you can help me. Thank You. PEL.

chrysanthemumcentury hi pel! you can call me herb :3
    lemme divide these up

1st] i believe if you click the gear next to the trophie on the bar that has all the sections, and go to profile, you'll find edit portfolio, and that's how :D

2] if you have points already from reviewing (which you do) you use 200 of those each time you publish something if you run low on points, just review again to get to 200 again (but remember, quality > quantity)

3] the word limit is rlly long lol, and it's the same for any type of work, so don't worry!

4] i assume you mean, why do you get the notification when someone posts even if you can look on your own wall? if so, then it's just to tell you a new friend as swung by!

YWS is amazing! and if you have any more questions, you can go @herbalhour, or find someone with a junior moderator green, global moderator green, or admin red username. the people with spiffy yellow and a different blue are people who retired from the mod team! some GM'S include @Spearmint, @IcyFlame, @keystrings, and @alliyah! if you need any help, don't be scared to just ask me any more questions :D

  • Hi, welcome to YWS!!

    PEL Hi Kaia,
I am new to YWS and I'm afraid I need help to get started. I see you need to create a folder. I am not tech savvy so could you explain the process please. Do I name the folder "Poetry" for instance or should it describe what's in it. How do I create the folder? Also once I have created the folder how do I upload my poetry or short stories ? Can I send the poems by email or by a PDF file or is there a way to do that by not sending them. I am very new to all this so I could really do with some help. Also is there a limit to how much you can up load at any one time? And is so how would I know what that limit is ? I wouldn't want a poem cut in half, if you know what I mean. Also does it mean that the more points you collect, it allows you to upload more writings at
any one time, or have I got that wrong. I am keen to get started so could you pleeeeeese heeeeelp. Big Thank you. PEL.

Kaia Hey, friend! I'm so happy to be here to answer some questions!!

Let's start with how to publish pieces. :D Go to "publishing center" at the top of your screen. Here you will be prompted to create a folder. This is so that you can organize your published pieces and drafts. You don't need any points to create a folder. So, like you mentioned, you can call your folder "poetry" or if you are a novelist, you may choose to name your work the title of the novel and then in the folder, place all the chapters to that novel. Either way, you can include a description of what's in that folder below the title of the folder.

Once you have created the folder, it's time to put some stuff into it! Go to "add new work." At the top put the title of your poem in the box that says "Your title goes here" This will be the name of the particular poem you are publishing.

In the blank below it, you will copy the words from your poem from whatever document it is currently in and paste them to the empty box. Once you are done with that, you can hit "Publish it!" for it to go into the green room (where all new works get placed after publishment) for YWSer's to read!

Now, let me explain points. You start out with (I think) 200 points which means that you can post one work for free. After that, you need to pay with points. You get points by reviewing for other YWSers. Simply read a work that interests you, and write a comment with any critiques that you think will help the author. BUT, VERY IMPORTANT. Before you submit your comment, make sure to go to the bottom and where it says "Is this a review?" hit "yes." If you don't do that, it will not be considered a review and you won't get any points.

Another tip about reviewing, the longer your review, the more points you get up to a certain point! So put some thought into your words! And please do not use AI to generate reviews. (not that I think you would hehe, but I want to include that)

I'm not sure if there's a limit to how many words you can post in one piece, but if there is, it's probably pretty big so I don't think you need to fear breaking up your poem unless it's super big.

You can also upload multiple things at once so long as you have the points for it. :D

I hope that answers some of your questions, but don't hesitate to ask more. If there's something I can't answer, you can also reach out to our wonderful moderator team whose names appear in green. I'm not a moderator, but I've been on this site for almost a year now so I know it pretty well, though I still do get lost in the forums section quite a bit still hehe. But you'll learn your way around pretty fast I'm sure :D YWS does take a minute to learn.
