I am pretty quick at creating aesthetics and ideas but a bit slow on the writing front these days. May not be able to complete this, but gettin' started is joy enough, innit?

    (Go home Arc you're tipsy)

  • Contacting your rep. Some folks may want to contact their reps about this bill but not know how/not know who their reps are. One easy way to find your reps is to use resistbot. You can text resistbot at 50409 to find out who your reps are, send them messages, and more. So if you're overwhelmed trying to figure it out or unable to call or email directly for any reason, that's an easy option.

You can also find your rep by zip code (the zip code where you are registered to vote, if that's different than where you live, e.g., if you're a college student living on campus but registered back home). You can also find your Senators by searching your state.

Contact state representatives as well! Most folks participate in federal government and don't bother with state or local gov, but state and local participation is often more important and at the very least is equally important.

(Yes, that does mean you should vote in state and local elections and not just wait for presidential elections to roll around! State and local elections are where state and local law proposals are put forth, which you can often vote on, such as renewing levies to support zoos & libraries or putting local income tax toward infrastructure like roads and bridges.)

Regarding this bill. Someone pointed out on Twitter that a typical play with such objectionable legislation getting put forth is

    - clearly ridiculous and out-of-bounds legislation gets put forth
    - people push back
    - legislation fails
    - still ridiculous and out-of-bounds legislation gets put forth BUT compared to the first attempt seems much more reasonable and much less grotesque
    - people are relieved because "at least it's not as bad as their first idea"
    - legislation passes

So YES, it's very important if you're a U.S.er of voting age to contact your reps and make sure they know you're against this! But also keep an eye on future legislation about similar things. Don't compare that legislation to this legislation; question it for what it is and determine whether it's actually acceptable or simply less objectionable than this proposal. If it's still objectionable, raise hell about that one too!

Learn more about the bill here. The thread also links to the bill's full text for those who want to read it!

Tauted under the guise of "banning TikTok," it seeks to establish a US Great Firewall, making VPNs illegal and giving an unelected body the authority to imprison or heavily fine (or both) anyone using a VPN or accessing "restricted content" on the internet. What might that content be? Anything their arbitrary hearts desire.

Oh, and the government gets unrestricted access to any electronic device with an internet connection.

This is a MASSIVE threat to freedom. Not even China is this strict. This is gross and absurd. Contact your congress people and tell them to kill this bill.

  • Nate wrote:With the March 2023 Review Day under our belts, March '23 is now well on track to beat March '22 in terms of pageviews. That's huge. For those unaware, the email system broke down last year, and the last full month where it really worked was in March '22. So for YWS to bounce back so strongly is pretty big, and that's due to everyone here.

Really looking forward to a great April, and to checking out all the NaPo threads. If you haven't started yours yet, get on it!
