Life? Well, I'm getting myself a falconry sponsor. I almost have him convinced to take me on as an apprentice - chances are I'll be trapping a hawk either this fall or next.

Featherstone For falconry? Oh yes. You trap a juvenile bird and train it. After a year, it's usually released, at least as an apprentice.

Featherstone No. See, when you trap a bird after it's been in the wild a while, all you're doing is taming and conditioning it. They wild up really fast if you don't handle them. You're actually giving them an advantage in the wild by giving them experience and conditioning so that when they are released they are strong hunters.

Featherstone You aren't conditioning it when it's really young, and its instinct is still there. Remember, you are training this bird to tolerate you while you hunt; it can learn to leave very quickly. Sometimes a bird that's been flown for years will fly away and not come back.
