So I'm going to try and get back into reading sometime today, and that'll be an experience, since it seems like every ounce of my subconscious despises the idea despite the fact that I love the author of the book I'm going to be reading.
Well, that, and I bought the damn thing like a month ago so I'd be hard-pressed as a pancake under a steamroller to not read it.
Hopefully it'll inspire some minor (and please for the love of god and everything sacred and holy to this earth not temporary) alterations in my style, as well as grant me more words to work with and study. Perhaps I'll grow better with my imagery skills as a result! I think.

Aight, so here's something I'mma chuck here so anyone who reads it can give me an opinion: I know one of my longest standing flaws in my writing has been my imagery. I am GARBAGE at it and have very little ideas on how to improve. Currently my biggest gate to bypass is the fact that my vocabulary and prose evolved to write essays for school rather than writing fun stuff to pass time, so I have zero clue how to describe an area because I don't have very descriptive words in my vocab.
If anyone knows of any forums or anything where I could, like, look at a picture and describe it to the best of my artistic capability and have folks give me pointers, that'd be awesome, grazie.
Mageheart I can't offer any advice, but I definitely feel you - imagery is the thing I need to work on most in my writing.

Necromancer14 Something that helped me with descriptions was to think about all the senses, not just sight. What does your character smell? Hear? Also using similes helps a lot too. I'm not very good at this, but I've still found this helpful. The other thing you can do is read a good book that has good imagery.

So it's ya boi, at least I'd like to think it is now. This account serves as a testament to my improvements and a monument to my sins, as almost everything I have here is to me a cursed folder of documents to be logged under a four digit number somewhere in the SCP facility and left alone until the heat death of the universe. Alas, alas, I can't get anywhere in life if all I do whenever I look back on how hasty and horrible I was with things in the past is try to delete every tie I have to it because I'm too weak to cope. Rather, since I owe it to the folks on this website for forming such an important foundation for where I've gotten now (not that much farther than I was before in terms of my writing, but better than I was for damn sure), I'm going to try and, uh...pick this old thing back up again, I guess. Here's hoping I can find my passion for writing and posting again, because yeesh these past couple years have been painful and I could use the catharsis.

So, honest question, are there any works here that are good to study the style of, for the sake of improvement? It's just now occurring to me how little an idea I have how to write a short story, and I'd rather not commit myself to a project I can't make a sensible dent in. Any tips help, even if you think they won't!
KaiTheGreater Honestly kind of in the same boat here, except not regarding short stories in particular. All I can offer is that, with my personality/learning type (and I'm guessing yours might be similar), I sometimes have a sudden "click" moment where I realize, "there's an actual pattern at play here", and suddenly as I immerse myself I just start to understand it in an instinctive way, even if I don't know the terms/can't put it in words. (Sorry if this was unhelpful or not relevant.)

SacredPen No, no, it's actually pretty helpful! Thing is, like you said, there's a method of augmented learning here, albeit mine is a bit different, since mine is more of a social oddity than learning. I can say that I've considered finding a trend or formula when it comes to these kinds of stories, but my issue is recognizing and implementing said pattern XD

I almost forgot today was my birthday! Yay me for starting it off in the best way possible - totally NOT staying up until it was time for me to wake up anyway because my sleep schedule is more whack than a lumberjack in the woods!
(wow, reading that out loud made my kidneys rupture)
Ahem, on that note, yeah, today's my birthday, so yay that, even though as life would have it, you wouldn't be able to tell, what with my having obligations out the wazoo until practically 9 tonight, but hey, you never know what the day has in store for you, eh?
