(If I'm ever not on, junior moderators, global moderators and admins definitely would be able to help you out with any questions or concerns you have, and your fellow members would be happy to help as well.)
Before you get settled in, you might want to swing by the rules thread to see what's allowed on the site, and the FAQ thread to figure out how the site works. It explains a lot about the basics of the site, like how to post your works and how to get points. It was really useful to me back when I first joined the site, so hopefully it'll be just as useful for you.
Some fun areas of the site you might want to learn more about are the forums, blogs and storybook section. The forums have fun games, writing activities, and places to talk about whatever writing project you're working on. The blogs aren't used as much as the other sections of the site, but you can post little life updates there. And the storybook section is a place to collaborate on stories - either by co-writing novel-style stories, or by taking part in roleplays.

There also is a club for new members called The Newbies Club. You can go here to ask questions, chat with other newbies, and hang out!

To post writings, you need points. You get points by reviewing work. Check out the green room, at greenroom.php
Some useful places you might want to visit, just to get to know some people and the site are the
Welcome Mat: viewforum.php?f=1 That's a place where you can introduce yourself, and get to know some other people.
The green room: greenroom.php
I know I already linked that above, but the green room is a really great place to review, because those are all of the works with less than two reviews, and when you review one, you get 25 extra points.
There are also a few rules. Ya know, may wanna read them, not that you're gonna go swearing in the forums or anything, but, you know.. Official YWS Rules & Guides

The blogs are also pretty fun. This is totally up to you what you write here, but I strongly recommend you start with an introduction, and tell maybe a bit about you. Or you could say "I just joined! Hey everyone!" and that's good too. Then, people will respond, and they'll know you're there. blogs.php just click the new entry button!
There's also a clubs tab. That's really fun, so if you want to start a club, Go for it! There’s also a club for newcomers! Check it out! We’d love to have you! There, You can find friends, ask questions, help others, bust boredom ;D.
