Hand

So I don't think I'm all that good, but this is one of my best drawings.

So, I see that you're modest about your drawing. It's a good thing to be humble and I like that.

I'd like to start by saying that from the look of your drawing, you seem small. I can't see your age-perhaps you haven't made it 'open' for us. Anyways, your drawing is nice but it does have an impression of an amateur's drawing. It's really not neat, if you know what I mean. I won't like to confuse you and just list down the flaws and how you could work them out.

1. To be honest, the shape of a hand is something I haven't figured out quite myself, so I can't really help you out on that. When I have to draw a hand, I do feel nervous and most of the time I end up erasing most of the stuff. But I'd advise you to take lots of papers and practice hand-just hand. It'd be awesome if you keep the pencil light while drawing and do a free hand. You just need to practice this kind of a thing if you want to improve. Study the curves and shape carefully.

2. Your colouring. There are many portions where in you have left the page white(the hand, I mean). So, just colour it nicely and the thing would look much better.

3.When you're drawing this, keep this in mind that a hand is not 2d, that is, it's not flat. So you need to give the right shape and bulges. To me, this, right now looks flat. There's no edge to it.


Besides, I like the nails you've made. I know you can work this out and in time you'll be better. Just keep drawing.

Wow, you are really ambitious choosing to draw a hand! Seriously, it is one of the most difficult things to draw. I always have trouble with them myself. Whenever I have to draw them, I always look up reference, or at the very least I will examine my own hand in the position I need. It really helps, espicially because every finger and joint has it's own place and it''s almost impossible to be able to draw those from memory! x)

On your hand, I'd say that the thumb is too large and it stands out over the rest of them. Also, the other fingers look a little tangled. I think looking at a reference or your own hand will help you fingure out how your fingers are supposed to bend.

As for the coloring, I'd say it's a little faded, but that might just be the way you took the picture or the lighting or something. If not, I would color a little darker or bolder and make sure you don't leave any white spaces.

Hands are always hard to draw. Like TheBlackSheep suggested, you should try looking up a reference or even just use your own hand as one. When I was staring at this picture, I couldn't quite figure out which direction the hand was drawn in for awhile until I zoomed in. The shape you've drawn isn't half bad, but I'd suggest working on your shading, because it'll add to the realism of the hand. Find where the shadows are and put them there. Good luck!
