SAI Sketch

This was my first time actually trying to use SAI correctly, so I hope I did kind of well.

Hey there. I'm Payne and I'll be your reviewer this evening (please bear with me--it's late, and I get a bit goofy this time of night).

First off, instant points for making this with a paint program. I've never seen SAI before, but I know from experience that digital art can be a challenge. I'll break this down into parts:

Eyes: The color is nicely shaded, and the light-spots look great. My biggest issue is the pupils; why are they transparent? The lack of customary blackness gives him sort of an unnerving blank-inhuman look (unless that's what you were going for, in which case, well done).

Hair: It has a nice manga-ish look to it, but the lighting almost makes it look like it's made of rubber. Consider making the light follow the contours of the individual spikes of hair (much like the shadows are doing).

Face: The airbrushed effect is very nice, and he has a very nice expression.

Neck: I'm guessing the black line is supposed to be the hollow where his collarbones meet, correct? If so, it's a bit high, more where his Adam's apple should be. And if it is his Adam's apple, then it should be curving more the other way.

Background: I love the feathery things around him; they add a very nice touch, and the texture is wonderful.

Overall, great work for a first drawing with SAI! Keep up the good work.

Payne probably just covered everything. I love your drawing. Okay i know i say this to everyone but i don't say it if i don't mean it. One side of the face is a little out of proportion oh and maybe you should have made the hair color or maybe the skin color slightly different.

This is definitely a great picture, especially for your first time using the program! One thing I like about SAI is that the colors are so bright and bold; plus they blend together with zero effort. The lineart is also really clean looking on this program, so manga/anime drawings become really easy.

I think you did a great job taking a simple design and coloring it so that it really made an impact. I think the way you shaded his skin was my favorite part.

For coloring tips, I think you can go a little bolder with the shading. Beneath his hair line you could've added darker shading to the skin so that the yellow-y orange skin didn't blend right into the orange hair. Under the chin and around the nose could've used a bit extra darkness too. I agree with what Payne said about the eyes; unless you were going for a vacant look, you should make the centers black and add a bit more color or lighting to add life to them.

Also, if you wanted to take the coloring a step further, I suggest playing around with Overlay layers. I like to take an airbrush and lightly add peach hues to the skin, or add slightly different shades to the hair.

Overall, this is a REALLY clean looking drawing. I like it a lot ^_^
