Yeah, I can't think up original names for titles anymore...

Anyways, this was mainly drawn so that I could practice shading. I tried to get different tones to the skin using just pencil and eraser. A lot of this was difficult for me. The skin took a lot of work even though it still looks one shade and the hand position was hard too.

So if you have any advice or anything, let me have it.

and I tried out a solid black shape in editing. Looks a little scary.

Hi BlackSheep! Okay, so this is really good. I couldn't see the sketch until I downloaded the picture, but that is okay. So first I'll talk about the sketch.

1. The first thing that caught my eye was actually the fact that she had literally no bust line. Unless this is a young girl she should have a little shape there.
2. I am also wondering why her face is so pale. Is that on purpose? Did she powder it or something?
3. Her hair also seems a bit awkward. Look at the top of her head. there seems to be too much hair on the right side of the top and not enough oomph on the left side.. Plus, it seems as though it was brushed forward, not parted like people usually do today. But that could just be me. I really like the way the hair kind of looks like she is in a slight breeze though.
4. Just four words: Where'd the ears go? I don't mean I should see all of the ears, but maybe a bit of the start of them. Because right now her face shape seems a bit odd without them.

So those are all my nitpicks. This was certainly better than anything I could ever do. Your hand and bird were amazing and I love how the eyes give this sketch a sort of whimsical look.

Anyway as far as the black shape, you are right, it does look scary. But I think the main thing you would have to change to make it less so would be the hand. It looks like claws now. Maybe you could make it a fist instead for this version with the bird on one extended finger?

I hope I helped,

Calli

Hey, Blacky! :D

Haha, it's alright if you can't come up with names anymore. It's the art that you show that speaks for itself. So don't worry about that. ;)

#BF0040 ">First Impressions

This is a really great picture you've drawn. It's got a simple white background and that way, the subject is shown in all its beauty. I'll go ahead and say that Calli above me has pointed out some of the points that I would point out as well. So I hope you've got the point. xD Anyway, I like how you've drawn just the upper body and made it look pure and beautiful and not adulterated by art processors. I've always been a fan of old-school art. And this is one fine piece!

#BF0040 ">Things to Note

As always, you do an impeccable job of drawing out the hair. It's just so amazingly well defined and detailed. It flows so well over the girl's scalp and brings out that inherent beauty that all girls have. But what I noticed here was the mid-section of her hair. It was far too behind and gave me the impression that the girl either has a really broad fore-head or she's bald from that point. I would suggest bringing up the face a bit more so that the fore-head gets shorter and it makes it even.

The birdie is wonderful. I have no qualms with birdie. It's very beautiful and small and just the type of bird you would want to see delicately resting on the girl's finger. I don't know if it's just me though, but I couldn't really spot the bird's feet. Either it's too small or it's been obscured by the angle of aspect (which seems highly unlikely).

By the way you've arranged it, it seems like you're having their eyes meet. And the girl actually looks like her eyes are closed. I understand that this might be difficult to interpret. But I would suggest that you just slightly open her eye-lids up a bit so that we know she's looking at the birdie, even though you've inclined her face (which is a nice artsy touch btw) to show us that. Never-the-less, it isn't such a big issue and doesn't bring down the quality of the piece :)

Now, for the second picture. I can imagine this being a silhouette of the first. I think that you missed out on the way this could have been portrayed. The only thing that I see here that lets me understand that it's related to the picture above is the hand and the birdie that are well in sight. But at least 50% of the image is obscured and the beautiful visage of the the girl's can't be seen which is a shame. The lovely hair with its fine intricate detail was also missed.
Essentially, what was missing her was detail. Try defining the main qualities of the object a bit more. For example, Make the strands of hair a bit more loose instead of just on the one side that you've done. Right now, it looks all too stubby and unappealing. It's like you've put a black cloth on top of the whole subject. Like I said, you could have shown us the main qualities that help us define the beauty of the girl. Her lips are so well drawn. Just keep the red-ness of the lips on the face and the glistening of the girl's eye-lashes so that we are hinted that she's looking at the bird. In the dark, it's far more difficult to understand the picture.

There were a few places that could have needed improving. But overall, I didn't find myself un-amazed by your talent. It's still a beautiful sketch. And the fact that you've attempted to draw something of this artistic caliber shows how well you're coming along as an artist. Great job. ^.^

#BF0040 ">Last Words

Yet again, I'm pleasantly surprised by your work. There's always something new and something creative that you add which makes it so much fun to view and appreciate. And if you're looking to better your titles, try giving names to your subjects. For example, she could be called Bella (I love the name Bella, lol) or something like that. It would make the piece seem more personal and appealing since there's some personality that you've forged into it.

Well done! Keep drawing. You're greater than great at it.

P.S. Congrats on winning the 'Best Artist of YWS' award. Well-deserved. 8)
