Chapter 1; A bloody Beginning
The suns fading rays slipped like serpents through the old tree's thick braches, shining upon the dark hair of Ryuu, a little girl who is visiting her grandmother’s grave. She looked up at the colourful sky, and saw it was time to go. She rose and looked at the surrounding forests, deciding on the path to take. Ryuu walked as quickly as her stiff legs allowed her, for staying in the same position for more than eight hours on end tended to cause muscle cramps. She was travelling along the path which has provided much comfort to her for the past three years. She reached the edge of her home town when the sun was only just visible above the mountains in the distance.
Ryuu hesitated before continuing, for the shadows had spread to the town, which was renowned for its crime levels. This was why there was barley any tourists; in fact they uttered the name Mistforn with fear. Sighing, Ryuu carefully ventured into the streets. She stuck to the shadows, staying alert for any signs of danger. Ryuu was sticking to the backstreets, despite the fact they could prove more dangerous than the other parts of town.
Ryuu headed into a damp and dark alleyway to her left. The shadows engulfed her, reducing her visibility so much she couldn’t see her hands directly in front of her face, but this caused her sense of hearing to increase, which could prove to be more reliable than sight. She walked with a carful silence and grace, yet kept moving as quickly as before. Then all of a sudden she stopped. She could hear footsteps behind her.
Ryuu reacted quickly, darting to the side and waited, listening carefully. The footsteps grew louder and slower, Ryuu silently cursed the darkness for now she was at risk of being attacked without her knowing. The moments passed as Ryuu listened to the footsteps in suspense. Suddenly they stopped. An eerie silence followed. Then Ryuu felt the warm wet breath of a person behind her. “’Allo love, care for some fun?” Ryuu froze and went to leap forward but the person behind her grabbed her wrists and knocked her fragile legs out from beneath her. She fell with a dull thud. She was trapped by the man on top of her, who was overweight and completely crushing her. He chuckled. Shifting his weight, Ryuu heard a belt buckle undo. Fear shot through her, only to vanish due to the arrival of an escape.
With the weight shift, one of Ryuu’s arms had been uncovered. Summoning all her strength, which is more than you would expect, Ryuu shoved the man above her. He fell off with a thud. Ryuu leapt to her feet and tried to flee. Unfortunately, because of how dark it was, Ryuu failed to see the trash can in front of her. She fell. The man that Ryuu had knocked to the floor got up and grabbed her again. Ryuu kicked him violently. He dropped her, crying out in pain. Ryuu fled.
She arrived home panting and sweating. She knelt before the front steps so she could catch her breath. Ryuu felt dizzy and her shaking legs weren’t helping her stay on her feet. Once she redeemed herself, Ryuu walked up to the old wooden door. It creaked as she opened it. She walked through the hallway in silence. She walked into the lounge room and paused. No-one was there. Ryuu frowned in confusion. Her family was always in the lounge room. Where were they? Ryuu slipped through the room, being careful not to run into anything. She paused for a moment to look into the flames that danced in the fireplace. She smiled.
Ryuu went over to the kitchen. She stopped. If she got caught here the consequences would be painful. She walked in hesitantly. When she opened the door, a wave of hot air raced through her. Ryuu gulped and continued. She looked everywhere for her family yet they were not to be found. Ryuu paused at the back door. Behind her, Ryuu heard a loud crash. “Shit!” A deep voice exclaimed. Ryuu spun around, and collided into a balled fist.
Ryuu staggered backwards and threw her arms up in defence. Another fist smashes into her rib cage. Ryuu felt the bones crunching under the force. When Ryuu managed a look at her attacker, she saw the large figure of her father. Her eyes widened. “What the hell were you doing in the kitchen you worthless piece of shit!” He roared, raising his hand once more. “I, I, I was trying to find you.” She stuttered in reply. Ryuu’s father grabbed her around the throat with a crushing force.’ I do not want to hear your excuses! You know you’re not allowed in the kitchen, and where the hell have you been all day! You were supposed to be here working.” He snarled. Spit shot into her eye. Ryuu tried to loosen the grip of her father’s hand but it was like dragging a whale through quicksand. Ryuu screamed. Dark spots danced on her vision. As she slipped away from the world, Ryuu saw her mother and older brother race down the stairs and into the lounge room.
When Ryuu awoke, she was chained against the fence that stood at the end of her backyard. Her family stood before her, talking. Ryuu couldn’t hear them but she knew whatever they were talking about would not be good. When they realised that she was awake, Ryuu’s family grinned evilly at her. It was then she saw the black sports bag. Ryuu froze. She knew that bag and in it was bad news for her. She tried to speak but there was a gag in her mouth. She struggled against the chains but it was useless. Then the punishment began.
Ryuu’s mother pulled out a whip, but it was no ordinary whip. It was the Cat-O-Nine tail. Ryuu gulped. Her mother drew back her wrist and struck. The whip ripped through her skin, making her scream. Again and again the whip sliced Ryuu’s fragile skin. Blood poured from her injuries. Then her father stepped in. In his hand he wielded a pitchfork. Ryuu only had time to look up to see it being driven into her stomach. The cold metal got stuck in Ryuu’s bone. She screamed again.
On and on the beating went. Ryuu was whipped, stabbed and clubbed. Cuts upon cuts, splintered bones. Blood pouring out at such a rate that Ryuu was soon numb.
Night fell. Ryuu’s family had finally left, leaving her dangling against the cold fence, poison ivy rubbing against her wounds. The world spun before her vision, making Ryuu want to throw up. Mercifully, she slipped instead into the depths of unconsciousness, where pain is a distant memory.
