Cspr's Art Dump #1

So, I started a Visual Arts class this year at school and my teacher has us doing five projects a week--starting Monday. I decided to get a head start and these are what I've done. Feel free to critique and tell me what you think!

This one was done with various pencils (2h-8b, I think) and was based off a picture of a young Jude Law. It's sort of meant to be Ed Harker in its own way, I guess.



This one was done with various pencils (2h-4b, I think) and was based off a picture of Grace Kelly. I took liberties with it.



And this one was done while watching a dude on YouTube draw a similar manga girl, but I changed the face entirely.

Hey Cspr! I haven't spoken to you in ages. No worries, I'll make it up to you by reviewing your drawings. I am just saying, but you have definitely improved. From seeing your first drawing and then seeing these your anatomy has improved and the stances and body postures are not awkward. Makes me think that if you keep going and continue to draw as much as you do then one day you'll become an excellent artist that I will definitely adore (more then I already do).

The first picture: Without looking at the text written below I know I don't want to mess with this dude. Not that I would...But, I previously thought that he was some kind of knight out of a medieval fable. Now with his bulky figure that's a pretty good portrayal even if I am way off the mark. What I really do like about this picture is the hair and face. Yes, the nose down look a little awkward (and some good shading will neaten that up just right), but I still think that it looks really real. The eye and eyebrow on the left are a little askew in comparison to their twins on the right but that's just me being picky. I think you need neaten up on your shadowing though. To me it looks like you went crazy (and that is something I would do so that's definitely not what you want) with a HB pencil or what ever - c'mon Cspr, get with it. That's what my art teacher would tell you; of course I failed art but we can just skip over that part. Hmm, my suggestion for next time is to make your shading neater. Don't rush. Take your time so that it doesn't look like you just attacked the page. Let your tongue poke out the corner of your mouth, let the rythm take you...Yesh, I don't know what I am talking about but you get what I mean. One other thing: I don't get the background but since the character is the focal point it doesn't really matter. Well it does but I don't care, you guy is more important!

The second picture: Love it, love it, love it! Absolutely fantastic! Now this, this is what I call good shading. See, you do have talent! Everything about it screams posh, French woman - Did I mention I love it? Yes the eye is hanging a little and the nostrils could've been widened just that little more so she doesn't have animal-like features but this is just pure talent. Good work, this is by far my favourite one. I really don't have much to critique with this but maybe when you're drawing ask a member in your family or a friend to turn their face so that they are in that position and see how they look and where their feature's sit. It'll help with the anatomy of your drawing.

The third picture: This one was just so cute, I couldn't help but wanting to marry it. That's such a cute anime girl, it reminds me of a character off of a series. The clothes and the shading and the hair are all good (the clothes are spectacular actually) but I think you need to consider the human anatomy a little more. Her butt seems a little to small, and her hip width a little to thin. Since you have her upper body the way it is, add in some curves so that her butt (oh it's making my blush just saying this) fits in a little more with the picture. The hand also should be made larger but I am terrible at drawing hands so I can't really talk. And also the second eye on the right side, it slants a little too much. Other then that: I LOVE HER! Ooh, awkward.

Cspr you have definitely florished as an artist. Your works here are proof that you're working hard and that you're succeeding in the art of drawing. You've got to post some more, I can't wait to see them. Do you have a Deviantart account, by the way? Your drawings will definitely fit on there. With practice comes perfection and you don't have a long way to go. Just consider the human anatomy and shading, then you'll definitely be one of my most favourite drawers. I wish these pictures were larger and a bit clearer. Upping the contrast wouldn't hurt, either.

That said, you have an interesting style that reminds me of someone, only I can't remember their name, which annoys me to no end because if I could remember their name, I'd be linking you to some of their work so you could make comparisons/maybe pick something up from them.

You do seem to be naturally geared more towards the abstract and surrealist styles judging from how you drew Grace Kelly, which is pretty cool. I'd like to see the results of you experimenting with abstraction and surrealism.

In all the pictures, there's some skewing going on, but that's something only practice and awareness can remedy. One easy way to check for skewing is to use a mirror; the flipping of the image basically resets our brain so that we can see things we would not otherwise notice, like skewing or odd proportions. It's always a good idea to check sketches before you finalize them because it's easier to fix those things earlier on.
