The Winged Freak
She always dreamed she could fly.
She dreamed she had angel wings,
shimmering silver and eight-feet wide.
It was on these magnificent appendages that she soared
from tree and mountain tops.
The birds spoke to her and greeted her as family,
a feeling foreign to her soul.
Sometimes she wasn’t asleep when it happened.
Sometimes she would take off without warning
and she would soar for a time.
And then she would land,
always in a white bed with white sheets.
Always there were men and women
clothed in all white looking down at her.
She would tell them excitedly,
“I can fly. I flew here!”
They would look down on her,
shake their heads in pity,
and leave.
She was content to fall asleep and fly again.
Spoiler
There is a program at my school called Best Buddies. Students join and are paired up with a mentally disabled kid of the same age and you're friends for the rest of the year. I was paired with this one girl and everyday I saw her, she told me that she could fly. Some people thought she was stupid. I didn't. This is dedicated to her.
