It is too much to bear;
My love is far away from me,
And oh! It is unfair.
You see, he is a poor man’s son,
No fortune to his name;
No chances of advance in life,
But still, I feel the same.
If I could only be with him,
Sad poverty I’ll brave;
For though I am so rich in life,
My heart is in a grave.
Oh, I do so long for him!
And yet we cannot be;
Mama says he is too poor,
And sent him far from me.
Do not speak of love, I beg,
Or else my heart will break;
My love has left me on my own
To sit, and hope, and wait.

Forgive the poem. I find that it lacks in feeling somehow. I guess it's more of an exercise in rhyme rather than in word choice and what-not. I hope it's not completely useless though.
