A familiar sign flashed past. “Hartline – 5 miles.”

Lydia rolled down her car window and let the prairie wind rustle her hair. Memories seemed to close in on her. Playing tag in the wheat fields. Stealing apples from the orchards every summer. Reese Brogan's proposal the night of senior prom. “Have I really only been away a year?” she mused, “It seems so much longer. Has it seemed long to Reese? What if he's already married someone else?” With a deep sigh, she allowed tears to fill her eyes, “We would've been so happy. We... we were so happy those few weeks of our engagement. But now...” She brushed at a tear that slipped down her cheek, “If only we hadn't had that fight. If only I hadn't driven off. If only I'd come back sooner. Now it could be too late. Even if he's still single, he could be in love with someone else. Why was I such an idiot!” She slammed her hand on the steering wheel. “Oh Reese. How can I face you?” she whispered. She fiddled with the radio dial, relaxing as the familiar twang of country music filled the car. “Or maybe he's not in love with anyone, but he hates me. After all, who could blame him? I broke his heart, humiliated him...”

Another sign she'd seen a thousand times before. “Hartline – 3 miles.”

“I'll just find him and apologize. I'll let him take the lead on whether we can have another chance or not. Oh Reese, please, please give me another chance. I love you.”

Reaching the outskirts of town, her eyes were drawn by a sign that hadn't been there the year before. “Please don't drink and drive. In memory of Reese Brogan.”

*Gasp!* No! This is a really good story because, even though it''s so short, you really capture what's going on and draw in the readers and get them to know and care for the characters. My only critic is you should put where she is and what she's been doing for that year, and if she's been thinking and worrying about him like this all the time.

ZOH MY GOD! D:
What?! Noo! Oh dear....

Well for one thing, this was amazing for how short it was. When I saw it, at first I was hesitant to read it, because usually it's very difficult for a writer to successfully come up with a good story with so few words. But you honestly did an amazing job! I even felt bad for the girl. Though.... I would have liked to know more about WHY she ran away and why she didn't stay.

And also, getting engaged as a senior, wouldn't that be a bit... soon? I've heard of people getting married straight out of college, but high school? Actually... I take that back. She was from a small town right? It's common in small towns. *is a small town girl*

Anyway, I think you captured their relationship amazingly in just a small amount of space. With just a few nagging thoughts in Lydia's mind, I knew exactly what kind of relationship they had. I also liked what you did with the signs. At first I didn't get why you were saying that they were each "familiar". I thought maybe it was just to show how she grew up there and was used to it, but at the end I knew ;P that was sad~

Either it was implied that he was drunk driving due to her leaving, or I'm looking too far into it. But if it WAS implied, it definitely adds more depth and sadness. And if it's NOT implied and I'm over thinking like usual, then.... lie ;P haha

Anyway, really liked it! Did not see any grammatical errors, though, so you're good! ;P
If there's a 50/50 chance of getting something wrong go for it anyway because there is also a 50/50 chance of getting it right
