Icy here to review for you! I'm not too good with art or using PS/paint myself so take everything I say with a pinch of salt! I like the font you have used for the front page, although I think the lettering is a little cramped. It's a good start, yet needs to be more spaced out. As for the drawing below it's a nice concept; demonstrating the pen being just as mighty (or mightier) than the sward but you need to convey it more clearly. The graphics are very simple and it's easy to tell they have been done on paint. Try using a different editing program is it should give you the results you want.
So, I will say right off the bat that this is pretty interesting because you have what I would say is 50 percent a good cover and 50 percent a not so great cover. Why? Well because there are really only two aspects to this cover.
The Good! The Font! Okay, I adore this font. The word “writer” does seem a bit squished, especially by the W and the R and by the E and the other R. But I actually really like the font on here. Actually, I adore this font because it really makes an impact. I don’t know if it was a requirement, but you did leave “edited by Nathan Caldwell” off. I don’t know if you forgot or if it was intentional but I figured I would point that out.
The Other 50 Percent As you said, you were serious about the image but I really wish you weren’t. Part of me really wishes that you had taken a cue from jasminebells with her literary journal cover. Her image is very powerful and it really says “wow, you have to look at this.” With your cover, the font is what’s saying this and the image isn’t; it’s key to find a solid balance. An image to draw in the eye and then the font to really represent the title.
Still, I do adore you for using such a powerful, wowing font. Good, in fact, great, job with that. But a new image could and would do wonders for this cover.
Best of luck. ~lilymoore
