A Call to Arms
I'm trapped in this dream
Of sand dust and mirages
Of dark crusted blood
Of sinister images
Of broken brawn
And stricken pride
Of teary letters
To the family bride
Whose man had died
Whose man had lied
He once said to me
That before he left for war
He told her he'd return someday
He told her and he swore
Swallowing my thick
Gummy mucus goo
With blood ridden teary eyes
Reminiscing about you
With a blunt rusty pick
You punctured my eye
A blind man can't see
but still he can cry
When I left for duty
You too swore to me
Solemnly, to wait forever
Or, until I was free
Radiation and poison gas
They filled me with life
I had something to fight for
I had a wife
She would hold me
And hug me
When I was called to arms
Her arms would caress me
They would be so warm
Then another buddy
Of mine, he was shot
Red on the small stones
Yellow turned blood
A wet letter homeward
A burial attended
A widower comforted
A lover surrendered
You sent to me
A letter with pain
That told me in tears
That you'd watched the rain
As it fell from the skies
And quenched the earth
As it hit the ground
And pounded the dirt
The rain would keep falling
Even when the sky was clear
The clouds would be far off
But the rain would be near
Her eyes they were black
Formed with passionate love
And looked to the heavens
The blue skies above
All she could see
Was the rain falling down
In a big sandy ocean
Painted with yellow and brown
Where he would be sleeping
Day and night, all alone
With bombs and gunfire
His fate still unknown
She grabbed a rope
A knife and a chair
She set up her altar
And closed up her lair
She stood atop wood
Then kicked the chair
Her soft white shoes
Hung suspended in air
Word spread quickly
And the soldier was harmed
Never receiving
My last call to arms
Her arms.
